Roy Jones says he'll work with Errol Spence as comeback looms

Errol Spence has kept a very low profile ever since a knockout loss to Terence Crawford in an undisputed welterweight title fight in July 2023.

But Saturday, Spence stepped back into the spotlight at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, and was a highly interested observer watching Vergil Ortiz knock out Erickson Lubin in two rounds.

If the former unified welterweight champion is ever going to fight again, it’s supposed to be at 154 pounds. Even Ortiz and his team are lobbying for an all-Texas showdown against Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) instead of Jaron Ennis.

Although Spence hasn’t outright declared that he will fight again, he’s preparing for a comeback away from the cameras.

On Monday, Hall of Fame fighter-turned-coach, commentator and promoter Roy Jones Jr. said that he’ll be meeting with Spence and training him in Dallas to see if there is a potential union on the horizon.

“I'm going to work him out a little bit to see where he is at and help him get back,” Jones said in a conversation with Andre Ward on “All The Smoke Fight.”

“I do want to see him get back on the horse and ride again. Anything to do to help him out. I'm going to see what I can do. I don't have to be his trainer. I just want to help him get going with a couple of days of work and see what he can do, and see where he's at. If he likes it, cool. Just help him get back up. Sometimes we all go through these things. The main thing is: Can you get up from it? You're not judged by how you go down, it's how you get up. All of us want to see him get up. And if he had just one more fight, just for the fun of it, just to say I'm going to go out on my shield and go out right, I am cool with that, too. I am going to try to help him make a good, smart decision. If he has it, then he's going to go for it, I’m sure.”

Spence split from longtime coach Derrick James following the Crawford fight. Spence and James also sued each other in April last year after enjoying wins together against Yordenis Ugas, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Mikey Garcia, Lamont Peterson and Kell Brook.

Spence appeared to be a frontrunner to face Sebastian Fundora last year, going as far as facing off against “The Towering Inferno” after he first beat Tim Tszyu in a war. That matchup, however, never crossed the finish line.

Spence, 35, has survived a tremendous amount of adversity in recent years, including a near-fatal car accident in 2019, and a retinal detachment two years later that canceled his scheduled clash against Manny Pacquiao. Spence has also admitted to overindulging in alcohol.

Over the weekend, Jones, who was also at the Ortiz-Lubin event cornering Shady Gamhour, noticed that the fans still want to see Spence give it another go.

“He deserves all the love that he got, because he truly put Dallas boxing back on the boxing map,” said Jones. “A lot of people really love Errol Spence because he's a down-to-earth guy. [For Spence] to come out and see that kind of love, that makes you happy and proud for what you stood for and did … He lit up and loved the fan support. You can tell he was glowing in his element. That means he still has it and wants to be in the element again, and Vergil Ortiz knows that, too.”

Honestly, I don't think Spence would be better off making a comeback. He’s been through a lot that crash, the eye injury, the Crawford loss and sometimes it’s better to step away while you still can. Working with Roy Jones sounds exciting, but I just hope he’s prioritizing his health over pride. There are some fights that are no longer worth the risk.

Like you, I don't think Spence should return to the ring as a fighter. Physically, he has been through a lot that's put a ton of wear and tear on his body. And, if he does make a comeback, I'm not sure RJJ is the guy to train him. His efforts with Eubank Jr. didn't pan out, but that may have had more to do with Eubank Jr than RJJ.

Has Roy Jones as a trainer successfully helped anyone really? I know he's worked with a few people who were already established, but I don't remember anyone ever improving as a result of working with Roy.

The images of Errol Spence in the ring are starting to fade from everyone’s memory.

The former unified welterweight champion has been out of sight since a one-sided stoppage loss to Terence Crawford in July 2023. He did, however, show up ringside during Vergil Ortiz’s second-round KO win over Erickson Lubin in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 8.

And Ortiz and his team have mentioned Spence as a possible future opponent instead of Jaron Ennis.

Spence will be in need of a trainer if he does fight again, however, since splitting with Derrick James.

Roy Jones Jr. flew to Dallas to work with him. After doing so, Jones believes the 35-year-old isn’t a shell of his former self.

“He looked good, he looked very good to me,” Jones said to spam.com. “I seen that glow in him again. It made me feel good.”

Over the last few years, Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) has flirted with making a return at 154 pounds. Even now, despite being out of the limelight, he has options.

Ortiz called Spence his "dream fight." Sebastian Fundora and Jermell Charlo also have named Spence as a possible opponent.

If he does return, Jones wants Spence to know that he enjoyed their brief time together and is more than willing to continue aiding him for as long as he needs it.

“I loved working with Errol,” he said. “Errol is always fun to work with.”

Whether you loved or hated him, both fans and those who couldn't stand him have the same question. When is Errol Spence coming back?

Unfortunately for them, the former unified welterweight champion couldn't give them a concrete answer.

"I'll come back whenever I'm ready," Spence told several reporters.

For over two years, Spence has been out of sight and out of mind. Although it's been a while, it's practically impossible to forget about his last ring appearance.

After years of going back and forth with Terence Crawford, the two finally squared off in July 2023. What most believed was a 50/50 bout, turned into a one-sided beating as Spence was dropped once in the second, twice in the seventh, and stopped in nine rounds.

Shortly after suffering the first defeat of his career, Spence vowed to come back and wreak havoc in the junior middleweight division. So far though, he's remained on the sidelines.

Recently however, Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) has shown his face at a few select fights, including last weekend at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, as Isaac Cruz defended his WBC interim junior welterweight title against divisional debutant Lamont Roach.

As for what the former beltholder is up to nowadays, Roy Jones Jr. revealed the pair worked out together as Spence continues searching for a new trainer after his Derrick James split.

But besides staying in shape, Spence spends most of his time doing things that he deems are most important at this stage of his personal life.

"I'm taking care of my family," Spence explained to several reporters. "I be with my kids, my son plays sports, my two girls play sports. I be with my fiancé, my mom and dad, traveling the world, and just enjoying life."

Errol Spence has been out so long that he's now got a full set of dreadlocks.

If he stays out much longer, he'll be getting letters from his GP for his over 45 health check and then letters asking him for a stool sample to screen for bowel cancer in the over 50s.
