Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
Re: Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
Sexton for me, very soft vacant shot then battered off hughie fury in his first defence

Funso Banjo v Hughroy Currie for the British heavyweight title is long remembered as many ringsiders attempted to take their own lives rather than sit through the whole thing

Funso Banjo. I remember Joe Frazier's lad Marvis saying he was gonna pluck his strings.
He actually only beat him on a close points decision

Re: Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
Got to admit Funso Banjo is a brilliant name though
Re: Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
there were a lot of great African names around the time too, such as Proud Kilimanjaro

Had to look twice but Kilimanjaro fought someone called Sam Sithole

on the plus side at least it was only 60p a pint at the bar.
I think Harry Mullan boxing news described it as like watching two statues, only the statues would’ve been faster.
Re: Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
paultom, I remember Mo Hussein dispatching Bright Spider in double quick time.
Where the hell did they get that fellow from
The trouble with importing unknown African boxers was they could be utter kack (like Bright Spider)...or you might end up with an Ike Quartey in the other corner !

Re: Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
The Commonwealth heavyweight title fight between Horace Notice v Proud Kilimanjaro was awful too. Horace tried but Kilimanjaro was abysmal.

Rhino,
We have seen some utterly p*ss poor heavyweight fights ... to think we travelled miles to see them
Michael Holden was the worst by far. His purse for defending his title was something like s paltry £31k .
Mind you we made some good friends ....
Mark Potter
Julius Francis
Harry Senior
Danny Watts
Michael Holden
And we made good friends with Herbie Hide.
I remember Herbie used to drive mick Hennessy nuts with the amount of room charges on his room.

Great that you were friends with Potter god rest his soul. I watched that charity fight he did with the disabled lad that was lovely of him
Re: Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
Sean who can forget the pottsy v danny williams fight
Re: Lowest standard ever of British Heavyweight Champion
They don't come any more dramatic than Williams v Potter.
Danny had a dislocated right shoulder and with the end looking nigh, Williams pulled out a punch from the Gods with his other working hand....amazing !
Judging by Adam Smith's reaction while do the commentary, I think he shat his pants !

It took everything out of him, he's never been the same. There was no way TKV should have beaten Clarke, but he did.mickey1975 wrote: ↑05 Mar 2026, 08:27I thought Clarke beat Wardley. I think it took a lot out of him, though.joshj909 wrote: ↑05 Mar 2026, 05:49I don't remember Hrgovic being in much bother but to make the same argument, Clarke pulled off a draw against world champ Wardley first time out whereas Adeleye was beaten for pretty much every second of every round prior to the stoppage. The second Wardley/Clarke fight was a different story of course. Clarke's best win is still Allen but I don't think Adeleye has a better one.
