Great fighters with glass jaws

Who you got? Great fighter but with a weak chin.

Wilfred Benitez and Tommy Hearns are probably the best 2 i can think of that were exceptional talents but didn't take the greatest shot.

Wladimir Klitschko and Floyd Patterson for the Heavies, though I don't think Wlad was quite as glass jawed as Corrie Sanders made him look.

Any great fighter has to, by definition, have some resilience about them, but the first names that I though of were Terry Norris and Roy Jones

Have never heard anyone say that about Benitez. Yes he got knocked down a few times.
But he went 15 with Palomino, 15 with Duran, and 15 with Hearns. Got knocked down once by Hearns in those fights. Was only a few seconds a away from going 15 with Leonard as well.

Hearn's chin was never as bad as many said. Wasn't great by any means, but he didn't have a glass jaw.

I don't know if Benitez had a bad chin exactly, but the way he dodged punches by centimeters meant that on the occasions when he slipped up he got caught right on the point of the chin, so there's definitely quite a few times when he got hurt when it wasn't expected.

If I recall correctly, Parsons was the fighter the Petronellis told he was done.
Didn’t give him a choice. Told him he had a glass jaw and his boxing days were over.
They did him a favor. It doesn’t work that way very often when a buck can still be made.

I don't know about great, but Tommy Morrison was pretty good, and he couldn't take 'em back all that well.

The book on Benny Leonard seemed to indicate that Benny really couldn't take a shot too well, he was just so ring savvy and defensively smart that he was able to make it through the scary moments or avoid them altogether in most cases.

I wonder if the Harold Lloyd movie "The Milky Way" was about a fighter like Leonard.

I can't agree that Hearns' jaw was glass. If it were, he'd never get out of that first round with Hagler.

Glass may be a bit harsh, but he did certainly get rocked in a lot of his fights. Part of that comes with the territory of having such an aggressive style as well of course.

That’s the thing with some fighters, the aggressive come forward fighters are more likely to get hit and walk onto punches, the defensive ones like FMM rarely take flush punches and when they do they cover up, grab, hold and recover. So it’s hard to really know sometimes.

I dont think there was or ever will be a true great boxer with literally glass chin. Posters named Roy Jones, Wladimir Klitschko, Floyd Patterson and Tommy Hearns. They did not had a great chins, but not a glass ones either. IMO at least solid chin is "must be" for truly great boxer. If you want to be great, you must face another greats. And greats will hit you, sooner or later. You must take it

Patterson really didn't have a weak chin. Getting KO'd by Liston and Ingo is no great shame. They were both devastating hitters.

It took some beating from Ali before he got stopped, and he stood up to quite a few big shots in fights that he won as well.
