🚨 Errol Spence Jr will return to the ring vs Tim Tszyu this summer, sources have told @MikeCoppinger.

Spence hasn’t fought since his July 2023 loss to Terence Crawford. Tszyu will first take a tune-up fight in Australia prior to their bout, Coppinger has revealed on Inside The Ring.

Very risky opponent after such a long layoff. Spence and his team must think they see a weakness in Tszyu.

Kinda funny that Spence needed Crawford to completely go away from the sport before he returned to it

Tszyu getting another tune up and keeping Spence inactive a bit longer is a nice touch for him.

This is a real 50-50 at this point.

I'd take it. After the first Fundora fight, Tszyu doesn't look the same.
EJ could actually win this one, even though he's gonna be out of the ring for like 3 years.

Errol Spence, Tim Tszyu have deal in place for summer fight

Tszyu will first take a tune-up fight next month in his native Australia, where he’s an attraction, per sources.

The Spence-Tszyu fight – one that will mark Spence’s debut at junior middleweight following a long welterweight title reign – is likely to take place in the Dallas area or Australia. Texas’ Spence has headlined at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, multiple times.

Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) was in The Ring’s pound-for-pound top five when he last competed, a one-sided ninth-round, technical-knockout loss to Terence Crawford in July 2023. Spence was slated for a 154-pound title shot at Sebastian Fundora – they even faced off after Fundora upset Tszyu by split decision in a bloodbath in March 2024 – but it never materialized.

Spence, a future Hall of Famer, owns wins over Shawn Porter, Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, Yordenis Ugas, Lamont Peterson and Kell Brook, whom he traveled to defeat in his hometown of Sheffield, England, for his first title win.

In between those victories, Spence battled through injuries sustained in a near-fatal car accident in 2019, and later a left retinal detachment in 2021 that scrapped a scheduled fight against Manny Pacquiao. Spence turns 36 next month.

Tszyu (26-3, 18 KOs), a son of Hall of Fame boxer Kostya Tszyu, is 2-3 in his past five fights.

His nightmarish 2024 concluded six months after Fundora defeated him with another upset loss in a title fight, this time inside three rounds to Bakhram Murtazaliev. Tszyu rebounded with a fourth-round stoppage of Joey Spencer in April, but that win was followed by another loss to Fundora in July, when Tszyu didn’t answer the bell for the eighth round.

Tszyu returned to the win column in December with a 10-round, unanimous-decision win over lightly regarded Anthony Velazquez.

Smart move for both fighters.

Tszyu is done at top level. Fighting blokes who haven't won a fight in 4 years, but still have a name, is a great financial idea. If he wins he can fight Danny Garcia next. Or Shawn Porter. Or even Kell Brook.

If Spence wins he's back in line for a big money US fight. And if he loses..... well how often do people discuss Roy Jones v Danny Green?

But it shows todays boxing.

Spence's last win was against Ugas (2022). Ugas last win was against Pacquiao (2021). Pacquiao's last win was against Thurman (2019), Thurman has won twice in 7 years, last time out beating a blown up Superfly weight, and fights for a World Title next month.

Spenc could be anything from very good to completly washed.

Only 35, going to 154 is good too. But so much inactivity isn’t good. Nice brain rest I guess.

Anyone know if he has been in the gym this entire layoff? Or did he kinda retire.

I feel as this fight is more for Tszyu rather than Spence.

Tszyu is scheduled out in a couple months and then this is like a payday for him and for him to go on and bigger things rather than a comeback for Spence.

Tim Tszyu sets up Errol Spence Jnr match, though cut could delay timing

Tim Tszyu had a tougher go of it than expected Sunday in his return against unbeaten but little-known Denis Nurja – just not so tough, it seems, as to have tripped up his next steps.

Tszyu, now 27-3 (18 KOs), was taken the distance and sustained a significant cut under his left eye but in the end won a lopsided 10-round unanimous decision over Nurja, now 20-1 (9 KOs), at WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong, Australia. But it was the fight postscript that likely drew as much attention as the action in the ring.

It has been an open secret that Tszyu and former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jnr are on a collision course, and when asked about the in-the-works matchup being eyed for a summer date, Tszyu didn’t play coy:

“You know what they say: Catch the big fish,” he said. “Let’s go fishing.”

But even if Tszyu’s rebuild – back-to-back modest wins under the tutelage of Pedro Diaz after a career-spiraling 1-3 stretch – is complete, Spence isn’t just another fish in the sea. A 36-year-old southpaw whose only career defeat came at the hands of recently retired future Hall of Famer Terence Crawford, Spence had been a dominant force at 147lbs. Even if he hasn’t fought since that July 2023 Crawford loss, Spence still could be a serious threat to Tszyu at junior middleweight, or thereabouts.

“Look, I feel like I'm up for it, man. I feel like I'm up for it,” Tszyu said of the Spence challenge. “This guy was tough, you know, no excuses. But I think me and Errol Spence is gonna be one helluva fight. You know, it's a banger. You know how I am – I don't take a backwards step. So if he wants to meet me at the front, bring it on.”

As for Nurja, his resilience surprised Tszyu, who landed a number of big shots against his Sunday opponent. Aside from a fourth-round knockdown, Nurja stayed on his feet. More than that, he kept coming.

“Yeah, he's tough, man,” Tszyu said. “I expected that, you know – 20-0. But no joke. I think I had him a couple times, but – I don’t know – he just didn't drop. But, yeah, those were good rounds, bro.”

Not that Tszyu was carrying Nurja. Quite the opposite, he said.

“That one wasn't actually – I was trying to take him out. I’ll be honest with you,” Tszyu said. “They’re tough out of Europe. Hey, Albania – I didn't expect that, man. Big respect.”

Even if he didn’t exactly escape Sunday’s fight unscathed, Tszyu’s record avoided any further punishment – a contrast to his March 2024 loss to Sebastian Fundora, in which an errant elbow opened a bloody cut on Tszyu’s scalp, obscured his vision and likely catalyzed his first career loss.

Still, the cut will require time to heal, which could make summer a too-ambitious timeline for a Tszyu-Spence fight.

“This time we won with the cut,” Tszyu said. “Can't complain.”

This could be an intriguing bout. Without question Spence is talented fighter but to say he's inactive is a gross understatement, while Tszyu is an in-progress reclamation project that remains a question mark.

That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing the two of them square off.

Errol Spence eager to make example of Tim Tszyu in comeback

After three years away from the sport, Errol Spence is itching to get his hands on Tim Tszyu.

As reported by The Ring, the pair have a deal in place for a junior middleweight bout this summer.

Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) opted to stay sharp by facing then-unbeaten Denis Nurja, pitching a 10-round shutout in Australia last weekend. After another points win among home comforts, the former WBO junior middleweight champion made it clear that he's ready to throw down with the former unified welterweight beltholder.

"I feel like I'm up for it," Tszyu said when asked about the potential matchup post-fight.

"I think me and Errol Spence is gonna be one helluva fight, it's a banger. You know how I am, I don't take a backward step so if he wants to meet me at the front, bring it on. Let's go fishing."

Spence, who refers to himself as 'The Big Fish', appears ready and waiting to shut the Aussie up after an extended hiatus.
"You think s—t sweet," Spence wrote on his X account. "I'm a do you so bad!"

It's been a while since fans have seen the Texan in action, having been given a career-altering beating en route to a ninth-round stoppage defeat by Terence Crawford in July 2023.

Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) was knocked down three times before referee Harvey Dock stepped in and waved things off, a painful loss on his career-biggest night to lose their 147-pound undisputed title fight.

For the better part of the last three years, he's been out of sight and out of mind. Now 36, he's spent time recuperating with family without the boxing buzz to overwhelm him.

No longer aligned with longtime trainer Derrick James, he has worked with Ronnie Shields, Roy Jones and Stephen 'Breadman' Edwards in an attempt to find a new permanent voice in his corner.

Tszyu, who suffered similarly career-altering defeats by Bakhram Murtazaliev and twice against Sebastian Fundora, has now won two straight heading into perhaps his final chance at world-level contention again.

Tim Tszyu's 'relentless fire' burns as Errol Spence fight nears

The intrigue surrounding former world champions Tim Tszyu and Errol Spence Jnr as they move toward a potential junior-middleweight summer showdown centers on one question: Who can best overcome the damage of their previous losses?

Whether the 36-year-old Spence has truly recovered from his destructive beating at the hands of five-division champion Terence Crawford nearly three years ago remains unclear.

Spence has kept his “recovery” secretive, declining a Boxing Scene interview request through his Premier Boxing Champions publicist last week while training with veteran cornerman Ronnie Shields in recent weeks.

Australia’s candid Tszyu, meanwhile, has revealed far more by winning two tune-up bouts since a rugged stretch of getting markedly roughed up in three 154lbs title fights over a 16-month period in 2024 and 2025.

“I’ve got this relentless fire now, burning deep within me, so I really want it,” Tszyu told Boxing Scene in an exclusive interview on the eve of updated Spence negotiations that are set to push toward a conclusion this week.

When asked what’s driving his desire, Tszyu said, “Just probably because of the redemption story of where I’ve been and what I’ve had to overcome to get where I want to get to.

“This is the fight to get me back to where I want to get to.”

Although one connected official told a U.S.-based Boxing Scene reporter to “pack your bags” for the Tszyu-Spence bout to occur in Australia, Tszyu reacted with surprise to that news and said he’d be up for traveling to Spence’s home of Dallas for the fight if necessary.

“One hundred percent. It doesn’t bother me a bit,” Tszyu said. “I’ve always wanted to fight all over the world. The place and location doesn’t bother me. I’m keen.”

The son of former undisputed 140lbs champion Kostya Tszyu, 31-year-old Tim Tszyu 27-3 (18KOs) on April 4 recorded a knockdown and cruised to a wide, unanimous-decision triumph in Australia over Italy’s Denis Nurja (120-108 on all three scorecards) following another wide decision victory in December over Anthony Velasquez.

“I’m ready to move on and get to the next one,” Tszyu said of the Nurja bout. “Nothing too heavy, which I’m glad about.”

Tszyu suffered a facial cut under an eye during the fight that required six stitches to close. He got them removed this weekend after already posting a training run with the stitches in place with no repercussions.

Tszyu said he should be cleared to spar in about two weeks. By then, he expects to know when and where the Spence bout will occur.

Knowing the Spence bout is imminent, Tszyu sought out the Nurja bout as he switched up members of his team and retained Cuban trainer Pedro Diaz to tweak his fighting style.

Some observers said they didn’t notice a change as Tszyu threw punches freely and reverted to prior strengths by out-willing and out-working his opponent.

“It’s hard to completely change your style from one way to another. There are things I feel like are at the top of what I’m good at, and still things I want to improve,” Tszyu said. “It is what it is. We move on, we go to the next.

“I went at him in spurts. Sometimes, I was in cruise control. Sometimes, I put it on him. The guy was tough, man. There’s a lot of people who would’ve been in his position and tapped out. There were a couple of real survival moments for him. I hurt him a couple times. Big respect for him. He’s a tough guy, and he did what it took to survive.”

Tszyu knows both survival and when to set things aside for another day.

In the first Premier Boxing Champions main event on Prime Video, Tszyu sustained a vicious head cut from an early accidental elbow delivered by current WBC 154lbs champion Sebastian Fundora.

Instead of scrapping the historic bout, the badly bloodied Tszyu fought on and was edged on the scorecards. He fought as if he was haunted by the wound in his next bout, against IBF champion Bakhram Murtazaliev, and was badly beaten in a third-round knockout.

Those two outcomes provoked the question: Is the obstacle to a brutal defeat more physically taxing or mentally haunting?

“I think a bit of both,” he said. “Sometimes, you’re physically damaged and need to let your body and head rest. Other times, mentally, there is scarring. Right now, I feel all those lessons I’ve learned … I used to be afraid of losing … now that that’s gone, it’s a whole different mindset and a whole different feeling heading into fights. Everything you learn is a lesson.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is you’ve got to focus on making yourself happy. The main thing is I’ve got to do myself proud and make myself happy and put it all on the line every time I do it. Keep getting big fights. Keep working for a big challenge. I’ve learned that’s the key for me.”

Losing a bloody decision to the 6-foot-6 Fundora prompted a sober reflection.

“I’ve lost to the elite. And stylistically, some of the styles were just a pain in the ass,” Tszyu confided. “And that’s all that it was. Look, you just saw Fundora versus [former unified welterweight champion Keith] Thurman.

“Thurman, back in the day, was beating everyone up. He was the man. He couldn’t do anything against Fundora. Everything’s about who’s put in front of you, and, unfortunately with certain styles, I just couldn’t adapt or get the victory. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other styles that I can take out and completely obliterate.”

He likes the Spence matchup.

“It’s a come-toward style. I don’t have to go looking for it,” Tszyu said. “He’s going to try to come looking for victory, so whenever you’ve got someone like that, trying to win it, it’s going to open opportunities to land certain shots.”

Since so many others are wondering what Spence has left after getting knocked down three times by Crawford and stopped in the ninth round – back-to-back trainer of the year Robert Garcia speculated the Texan has “nothing” remaining after eschewing a tune-up bout – Tszyu was asked, as well.

“To a certain extent, those questions are real, but I think Errol Spence will still be Errol Spence,” Tszyu said. “I don’t think he’s washed.

“But who knows? Six years ago, this would’ve been a different Errol Spence. He’s 36 now, has gone through some big, tough fights. It’s all about if he’s got that drive or not. That’s the interesting thing about this sport. Sometimes, what’s in the heart – how bad do you want it? – is what gets people the victory.”

It makes for one of the most dramatic encounters of the year.

“I’m excited, because, in terms of timing, I believe this is the right time for Errol Spence,” Tszyu said. “He’s sort of fought everyone from his era. I know it was a different time. But over time, we are improving as human beings. We are getting better genetically, physically, technically, so his best accomplishments are in the past, but he wants to have a go at this generation, and this is what’s so exciting about this: ‘Does he still have it?’ ‘Does he no longer have it?’

“There are so many questions to be answered.”

ERROL SPENCE-TIM TSZYU SET FOR AUSTRALIA ON JULY 25, LOCATION TBD

Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence will head abroad for the first time since 2017, seeking a big scalp to re-energise his career at world level.

Three years removed from defeat by Terence Crawford, Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) will wade into enemy territory when facing former junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) on July 26 in Australia – July 25 in the US.

Veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael first reported the news, which has since been echoed by BS and reputable Australian news outlets.
Given PBC's involvement in Tszyu's points win over Denis Nurja on April 5, they anticipate this event will be a Prime Video pay-per-view stateside with a US-friendly start time to maximize their live audiences worldwide.

Immediately post-fight, the Australian contender was asked by Main Event's Ben Damon whether he believed he was ready for that step-up in class after decision victories over unbeaten but unheralded opposition.

"I feel like I'm up for it. This guy [Nurja] was tough, no excuses, but me and Errol Spence gonna be one hell of a fight. You know how I am, I don't take a backwards step so if he wants to meet me at the front, bring it on. Catch the big fish, let's go fishing," he said in response, while Spence wasn't impressed when reacting on social media.

It has since emerged Tszyu had already decided, a few weeks out before the Nurja win, that more changes were afoot after being left unsettled in a Miami training camp under Pedro Diaz 9,000 miles away and with a 14-hour time difference behind home comforts.

He will now be trained and managed by Jeff Fenech, just six months after parting ways from his longtime team headed by Igor Golubev and manager Glenn Jennings.

"This combination, Tszyu and Fenech, it's not just going to be remembered in boxing history but sporting history," he told Fox Sports Australia.

"It's been a long time in the making and I wanted a big Australian synergy, something that has never happened. This [fight with Spence] will be one of the greatest victories in Australian boxing history."

"There was a lot happening in that last camp and in all honesty, I wanted to spend more time in Australia. Nobody was doing anything bad but before the fight I had that in mind, that I can't do any more time away."

Spence's longtime coaching partnership with Derrick James ended acromoniously in 2024, some 15 years after they began. The 36-year-old went from budding amateur star, winning national titles and later becoming an Olympian, to winning the IBF world title against Kell Brook in Sheffield, England five years into his pro career.

He won seven consecutive world championship fights over a near five-year period, later unifying the WBC and WBA titles before the damaging Crawford defeat for Ring and undisputed supremacy at 147 pounds. Now, he's said to be training intensively with Ronnie Shields alongside former WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman.

While this is a more lucrative bout in Australia, Spence knows the value an impressive victory would also provide.

He was previously in negotiations to face WBC titleholder Sebastian Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) and while the 28-year-old beltholder has stated a willingness to face all comers, he'd like Spence on his resume - just as Tszyu does.

The July 25 winner will have increased leverage while on a healthy timeline to stay active, with Xander Zayas-Jaron Ennis on June 27 and IBF champion Josh Kelly expected to make his first title defense in July or August.

Errol Spence Jnr-Tim Tszyu official for July 25 in Australia

Errol Spence Jnr’s return from an extended near-three-year-long absence from prizefighting will come following a lengthy journey.

BS confirmed through an official connected to negotiations that former three-belt welterweight champion Spence will venture to Australia to meet that country’s native son, former 154lbs titleholder Tim Tszyu, in an expected Prime Video pay-per-view on July 26 in Australia – July 25 in the US.

Veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael first reported the news.

Spence, 28-1 (22 KOs), hasn’t fought since his one-sided defeat at the hands of now-retired five-division champion Terence Crawford in July 2023 in Las Vegas.

In that bout, Spence, 36, was knocked down three times before getting stopped by Crawford in the ninth round.

Former WBO belt holder Tszyu, 27-3 (18 KOs), has fought seven times since Spence’s previous appearance, but he has lost three of the bouts – two by knockout.

Tszyu this week announced he was making his second corner change within a year, ditching Cuban trainer Pedro Diaz for countryman Jeff Fenech.

Spence is eyeing the bout not only for the value of the purse but also to re-emerge as a title contender in a rich division that counts fellow Premier Boxing Champions fighter Sebastian Fundora (WBC) and Xander Zayas (WBA, WBO) as titlists and former welterweight belt holder Jaron “Boots” Ennis and WBC interim titleholder Vergil Ortiz Jnr as contenders.
