It appears that Orban is preparing to declare a state of emergency over a planned Ukranian insurgency - strange that they would time it to happen just before he is about to get defeated in an election, when they've had 5 years nearly do so.

I was in Budapest a few years ago - whicn is a great city, very beautiful, and fun too, we met lots of young people there, and all of them said the same thing, that life in Budapest could be great, if it wasn't for the rampant corruption.

Imagine if instead of large amounts of money being siphoned off into the hands of Orban and his cronies, it was actually being used for development?

I have some doubts though, that the opposition candiate will really offer a long term solution, he seems like a bit of a slippery sod.

True but the thing is with Trump is that he's not a strategic thinker. He's dumb, lazy and has dementia on top. I'm sure some sort of strategy to disrupt the EU is several levels beyond what he thinks about. Hell he wouldn't even know how Hungary could disrupt the EU and even what they are currently doing to piss off the EU. Nor would he even have teh slightest inkling as to how that could benefit him personally or the USA. All Trump has got is his reptilian instincts, namely, "EU doesn't let me do what, so they are the enemy, Orban tells EU to stuff themselves, I like Orban". It's the same with the press, the courts, whatever. Anything that restricts the toddler that Trump is, is a poopy-pants.

As much as I agree with your characterization of Trump and the state of affairs in this country (and I could certainly add a few more epithets), it’s still a team effort. Even if many in his administration tend to fall in line, they’re not ENTIRELY blind. At some point, they will recognize opportunities and point them out to their leader: for example, when Orban/Hungary veto the next EU decision. That veto power could certainly be used to their advantage, considering how much they seem to appreciate what’s happening in Europe.
