That's honestly the smartest move Ryan Garcia could make I'd imagine. It's his best shot at holding onto his title a little longer I think, and it would make a rematch between him and Haney bigger as well especially if Haney picked up another W in the interim.

I’ve seen a few other people quoting this but can’t actually find Prograis directly saying it.
Edit. Found it, it was an interview afterwards with Ring Magazine but they’ve condensed it down into one paragraph.

When asked about his thoughts and feelings after the defeat, the 37-year-old didn't mince words.
"Going in, I knew I was going to retire. This is my last fight, I knew this months ago, just didn’t tell nobody but was terrified going into this. The rumors about me being hurt were true, I wanted to pull out of this fight so bad a month ago but kept pushing, I was terrified and thinking about pulling out even yesterday.
"It’s just emotional for me, so glad I went through this fight. It's a great fight to be my last against someone like Conor Benn, someone that was strong, an arena like this with 70,000 in a stadium ... couldn't ask for a better going away party, perfect end to my story."
He continued, adding that he suffered four separate injuries in training camp and had a pep talk from his mother, saying he'd regret withdrawing from a fight of such magnitude just as the retirement thoughts crept back in mind.
"My right hand was messed up, my eye, my jaw, rib injury, a bunch of things ... but it all held up. Nothing I was scared of [aggravating] happened in the ring, nothing showed up so I have no [new] injuries to worry about.
"It's a perfect storybook ending, I feel like this is Rocky when he fought Antonio Tarver, he was the older guy who wanted to prove what he could do and for me, I proved what I could do. I went up [in weight], stronger, we fought in-front of 70,000 people in London, this is the end of my career."

He was just there for the payday, like most fighters today. He didn't care about winning, just didn't want to get KO'd.

Re: Conor Benn vs. Regis Prograis | Netflix - 11 April 2026
Speaking with Boxing News, Eddie Hearn suggested that Benn is a more spiteful operator at 160lbs, and ultimately said it was a ‘difficult’ watch due to the condition of Prograis.
“Yeah, it was what it was. It was difficult because Regis couldn’t really stand up. You could tell from even the first round his leg wasn’t, you know…
“Not the best [fight from Benn], but he’s had a lot to deal with and I wish him all the best.
“I think he’s better up at middleweight to be honest with you. I don’t think he has any power down at that weight, and I think he looked much more effective and stronger at middleweight.”

There was a moment or two early I thought that Conor was going to iron him out, but for various reasons it didnt happen.
Once Regis got passed a certain point it looked inevitable he'd survive, he gave Benn something to think about.
Benn still has more work to do on strategy and boxing if he wants to, although there's a side of me that thinks he'd be content
have a proper scrap and throwing it down right on the spot.

Prograis was probably around less than 50%.
He’s lucky he had good head movement, Cus his legs were not working all fight.
And he still gave Benn trouble.

Stevenson, Garcia, Haney unimpressed with Benn's win over Proragis
All eyes were on Conor Benn Saturday night as he labored to a points win over Regis Prograis in London.
All eyes were on Conor Benn Saturday night as he labored to a points win over Regis Prograis in London.
Benn fought Prograis on the undercard of Tyson Fury-Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, live on Netflix.
However, the nature of Benn's win wasn't what most expected, as he went the full 10-round distance with Prograis, a natural 140-pounder. The fight was fought at 150 pounds and all three scorecards read 98-92 in favor of the Brit, who took some heavy shots during the bout.
Three of American boxing's biggest stars in Shakur Stevenson, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney, all potential opponents for Benn, were unimpressed with what they saw.
After Stevenson's victory over Teofimo Lopez on January 31, the four-division champion called Benn into the ring, who obliged and got into a verbal exchange with Stevenson.
Even though Benn called out Ryan Garcia for a shot at his WBC welterweight title after beating Prograis, Stevenson remains an option.
"If he makes it 12 rounds with me I’ll be disappointed in myself," Stevenson wrote on X. "U see he fighting a southpaw, who he getting ready for?"
Stevenson's tweet caught the attention of Turki Alalshikh, who replied: "You’re the best in your division now no question about it."
Garcia, who won the WBC title from Mario Barrios in February, wrote: "Mark my words, his corner or the ref stops my fight with Conor in the 6-7 rounds. I’m down GARCIA VS BENN Let’s do it!!!!!!"
Haney knocked down and beat Prograis to win the WBC junior welterweight title in December 2023. He also has history with Benn, who notably feigned falling asleep during the three-division champion's unanimous decision win over Brian Norman last November.
"Conor Benn stay away," he wrote.
Whoever Benn fights next, it now almost certainly looks like it'll be against a big name.

Re: Conor Benn vs. Regis Prograis | Netflix - 11 April 2026
“I’m not here to give stick out to Conor Benn. For me, he is quite an exciting prospect. And I say prospect with an asterisk because he’s been a pro nearly ten years and in some big fights.
“He couldn’t get the job done. He didn’t look like he was punching hard, Prograis was hurt in round one and Conor Benn couldn’t get rid of him, went 10 rounds and his head looked like it had been hit with a baseball bat.
“I think that their heads came together a lot, he got a cut above his right eye and his head was all swelled up and bruised.”
“I don’t think that he will be happy with that performance and I’m just being honest, but all the best to Conor Benn.
“He did what he needed to do, 10 rounds against a two-time former champion and he now needs to look onwards and upwards and look forward to that fight with Ryan Garcia because that is a big fight.”

allegedly Delivers Honest Verdict On Conor Benn’s Performance vs Regis Prograis
“Listen, he fought a guy who was a good fighter, he’s still not a bad fighter, but he’s not a natural at that weight, and I think he gave him a few problems.
“He’s got a good work rate Conor, he got banged up a bit, he got badly banged up in the fight, he got a few cuts, you know, I don’t think it was a great day in the office for him but it is what it is.”

Hearn on Benn’s fight with Zuffa
“That was wild. I mean, that was like ‘how to piss money down the toilet very quickly’ by Zuffa Boxing, that one.”
On Benn’s manager
“Look, at the moment I have absolutely no desire to ever work with Keith Connolly again. Sometimes, in a years time, in three years time, things can change. But right now, I mean we said to Keith Connolly recently, we withdrew our offers a couple months ago for Berlanga and Hitchins. I think we have one or two other fighters with him, which, you know, I think that’ll fizzle out now. But it is what it is.”
On why he thinks Dana White won’t bring back Benn for another Zuffa card
“Because it sets a precedent about how to pay fighters.”
