Jose Luis Castillo vs Kostya Tszyu

Post by gilgamesh »

I noticed after Castillo's victory over Joel Casamayor he made the comment that he wanted Diego Corrales in May and then Kostya Tszyu in September. Now we all know how the chain of events played out for everyone in 2005.

Let's say we shake up the matchmaking a little, and Castillo fights Kostya Tszyu that Summer instead. How do you see that fight going?

That's an interesting scenario.

While rewatching old fights, it's sometimes worth listening to post-fight interviews to hear who was calling out whom. Some more mythical fights can be made.

Now, to the subject of Tszyu-Castillo... I suppose, Castillo was considering moving up to 140 for that one? Given that he had history of failing to make 135 - I suppose, he'd have made 140 pretty well in mid-2005. How effective he'd be at that weight- who knows...

Stylistically, this match-up would've suited Tszyu better than Hatton. However, Castillo was capable of applying intelligent pressure. Plus, had a heck of a left hook.

All things considered, we still should probably make Tszyu a slight favourite at 140. Him and Castillo would've likely fought in US. I guess, Kostya wouldn't have to go thru same shenanigans with time zones and scales that he encountered in the UK.

Still, it's a risky fight at that point of Tszyu's career. Both would've tasted the canvas, IMO.

P.S. I guess, you rewatched Castillo vs Casamayor, right? If you did, how did you score that one?

115-113 Castillo is how I had it when it happened. I just kinda had it on as I was going through the process of getting ready for work today.

I have finally got to watch the fight.

It was a good one. Surprisingly for myself, though, I had Castillo winning more convincingly than when I watched it years ago.

There are several videos of this fight on YouTube. Most of them in a so-so quality. But there's one that's pretty good. Mexican TV broadcast, apparently.

If you're willing to rewatch and score it again, I can give you the link to it.

No I'm not willing to watch it again. I just watched it the other day. I'm probably not gonna watch it again for decades if ever again.

As for Castillo vs Kostya Tszyu in 2005.

I actually think Castillo could've beaten Tszyu. Tszyu always preferred to operate from mid-range, and couldn't really get much force on his punches from in close. Both times that Tszyu was beaten was by pressure fighters that would smother his attack. Castillo is another one of those types of fighters.

I think that JLC could've pulled off the upset over Tszyu, and taken his title if they had fought in Summer 2005.

Ah, got it. The way I understood it - I thought, you had it on TV recently, but didn't really watch it. So, I thought I'd offer you the link.

"I'm probably not gonna watch it again for decades if ever again" - was this fight that bad? 🙂

No it's not a bad fight at all. It's a good fight, but I'm currently working on a project where I'm watching back almost every big name fighters careers in their entirety so once I watch a classic fight, I'm simply not going to have time to revisit it for a long, long time.

That's an interesting take. And a good analysis.

I think, a version of Castillo who steamrolled Corrales in their rematch could've done a number on Tszyu.

And what an achievement it would've been for JLC's career, had he dethroned Tszyu and took his Lineal champ status at 140.

His streak would've looked like this: Juan Lazcano, Julio Diaz, Joel Casamayor (3 wins that solidified his status as The Champ at 135lbs), Kostya Tszyu (140lbs Lineage).

That's interesting. Is it a project for some boxing publication, if I can ask?

No it's honestly just a project that I'm doing to satisfy my own curiosity about where the great fighters rank in comparison to one another. I probably should write a book about a Boxer that hasn't been written about at some point. Maybe in my retirement years I'll shift into something like that.

For now, I'm just watching a sh*t load of fights, and trying to come up with a definitive All Time great list of fighters I've seen. With YouTube now being able to fill in the blanks of fighters I couldn't have previously been able to watch it's been a fun thing to dive into.

Cool. As for me - I'm not the biggest fan of all time great lists)) Compiling those is usually a headache for me, lol.

But! I have a good buddy, who's actually doing something similar right now! He's also watching shit loads of fights and making P4P lists. I can ask him for his list and might send it to you. Just for comparison. Or, perhaps, you'll get some good ideas.
