Lorente ready for world title shot vs. Carrington after Collins win

Cristobal Lorente righted a perceived wrong in his eyes when he returned to Glasgow, Scotland and bested Nathaniel Collins last Friday.

The Spanish fighter was held to a draw last October by Collins, but this time got off the canvas to claim a 12-round split decision and with it the WBC featherweight mandatory position.

"I demonstrated that I dominated the fight, and I learnt a lot from the first fight," Lorente (21-0-3, 8 KOs) told The Ring. "I make a good game plan with my corner.

"I started slowly because it's a long fight, I increased my level round-by-round, I like to start slowly and finish hard for the fans and for me too."

Like the first fight, Lorente came on strong in the second half and that proved pivotal this time.

"The difference is I learnt lot and Collins didn't," he said. "They say, 100 percent they are a better boxer than me but that's not true, I dominated him and I put Collins in school.

"I go to the gym to learn to increase my level of boxing and return to Glasgow to win this fight."

The 30-year-old could be forgiven for being worried at the conclusion of the close fight when the scorecards were announced.

Experienced Italian Giovanni Poggi sided with Collins 116-111, however, American judge Barry Lindenman levelled the scoring, by leaning towards Lorente, 115-112. Scotland's Victor Loughlin held the deciding vote and picked Lorente 115-112.

"The judge is crazy, they don't see the same fight that all the fans and other judges," he said. "I won this fight clearly. Unfortunately, sometimes one judge makes a mistake in his decision."

Lorente, who was unranked by The Ring heading into this fight, could gatecrash the 126-pound rankings with this victory, headed back to the host hotel afterwards but the main celebration will come now he has returned home.

"We will have a crazy party in Spain this week to celebrate with all my people," he said. "I will celebrate this victory with my family, my gym, it's a part of me and it's for everyone."

While this is a huge moment in his career, it will lead to something even bigger when he faces unbeaten American Bruce Carrington for the WBC title and is happy to travel for the opportunity.

"This victory is very important because I'm the official challenger for the world title," he said. "Carrington is a good champion but I am waiting for a date to start preparation for this fight and to become world champion.

"I'm so confident in my skills, I am confident in boxing in other countries. It's a motivation to go far away from my country."

He has a short but to the point message for Carrington.

"Carrington [let's make] a date, the Spanish guy is ready, when you are ready, let's do it," he said.

He was knocked down but still fought back, winning narrowly after 12 rounds, demonstrating a strong fighting spirit. And the way he adjusted the pace, starting slowly and gradually gaining the upper hand in the final rounds, showed it wasn't luck but a well-planned strategy.

Cristobal Lorente rises to WBC’s No. 1 featherweight ranking

Cristobal Lorente didn’t just give Nathaniel Collins his first loss – he also took Collins’ spot in the WBC’s rankings of top featherweights.

Lorente and Collins had fought to a draw in October 2025. They had a rematch last month, with Lorente winning via split decision. He improved to 21-0-3 (8 KOs) while Collins fell to 17-1-1 (8 KOs).

Lorente was previously rated No. 2 by the WBC. He’s moved up to No. 1 in the sanctioning body’s monthly update, which was released May 6.

Collins had been No. 1 and has now dropped all the way to No. 5.

The WBC titleholder at 126lbs is Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington, who is scheduled to defend against Rene Palacios (who has moved from No. 12 to No. 10 in the organization’s rankings). Carrington-Palacios will take place on July 4 in Cleveland, Ohio, on the undercard of Abdullah Mason-Joe Cordina.

The WBC also has a “champion in recess,” Rey Vargas, who has not fought since a March 2024 draw with Nick Ball.

Lorente is followed in the WBC’s rankings by Ball, Omar Trinidad, Luis Nery, Collins, Reiya Abe, Joet Gonzalez, Mikito Nakano, Liam Davies, Palacios, Toshiki Shimomachi, Brandon Mejia, Marlon Tapales, Otabek Kholmatov and Kevin Walsh.

Abe’s and Shimomachi’s rankings are particularly strange. The WBC’s ratings say they reflect results up to May 2. And early in the day on May 2, Shimomachi won a majority decision over Abe on the undercard of Naoya Inoue-Junto Nakatani.
