I’d like to hear from others around Australia as to how they find the state of amateur boxing in their state. I attended a show last night in Perth and without resorting to the “C” word I can confidently say from the organisation, from the communications, officiating including refs and judges, was appalling. I watched two you blokes (one with a very prominent name in Australian boxing) be matched up for a second time. One, not the prior mentioned, wanted to box, the other committed blatant fouls including rabbit punches, throwing to the canvas, attempts to push through the ropes, unsportsmanlike conduct between rounds only to have one point deducted (no warnings and in a pro environment may have lead to a DQ!!)And guess what, the wwe prodigy got the nod.
Throughout the night the officiating was anything but consistent, judging was appalling, but there seems to be little ability by gyms to vent their frustrations or preparedness to challenge the hierarchy in fear of repercussions against their gym or boxers moving forward. I spoke to several boxers and trainers throughout the night and the common comment was “this is why guys stop competing “.
I’m curious to know is this something isolated to WA or is it being encountered Australia wide.
