Javier Castillejo vs Ricardo Mayorga (2005)

Post by 2128778 »

I think, I've done a thread on this one before, when I was still operating on a previous profile/account.

In mid-2005, WBC ordered its then-champion Javier Castillejo to defend the title against then-mandatory Ricardo Mayorga.

Castillejo opted to fight Fernando Vargas in what was a more lucrative bout for him at the time. WBC stripped the Spaniard and ordered Mayorga to fight Michelle Piccirilo for the vacant strap.

What if we would've gotten Castillejo-Mayorga instead of Vargas-Castillejo and Mayorga-Piccirillo bouts?

Castillejo was one of my favorite working man fighters of his era. I think Mayorga beats him by a decision but it would’ve been a good fight

mayorga something like 116-110, 115-111, 114-112 with a couple knockdowns where javy is down but not badly hurt.

mayorga is one of these guys who looked so poor to the eye but was actually quite accurate and effective, he had real power and good timing, so even being so wild he often got his punches home. javier for his part super fit and tough guy, he would probably work more consistently compared to the big bursts of mayorga

That sounds about right. I could see all the scores being more along the lines of the 115-111, 114-112 type score. I think Mayorga is too wild to stop Castillejo who was pretty tough and defensively sound, but Castillejo I don't think has anything offensively that's gonna be able to win the fight for him. He'll get some rounds when Mayorga has to catch his breath a little, and he'll hold his own in the others, but he'll get outhustled and outlanded most of the time.
