Abdullah Mason will defend his WBO lightweight title vs. former titleholder Joe Cordina in June on DAZN, sources tell @ringmagazine.

Mason won the title in November in a thrilling victory over Sam Noakes. This first defense will likely take place in his hometown of Cleveland, as I reported on @InsideRingShow.

Report: Abdullah Mason-Joe Cordina headed to Cleveland

New WBO lightweight titleholder Abdullah Mason is in negotiations for a first title defense in June versus top-rated contender Joe Cordina.

The Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger first reported the development that would place the Top Rank-promoted card in Mason’s hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, on July 4, following the 22-year-old’s vacant title victory over England’s Sam Noakes in November in Saudi Arabia.

DAZN will stream the card when finalized.

The left-handed Mason, 20-0 (17 KOs), has been on a rapid ascent since his November 2021 pro debut.

In Wales’ Cordina, 19-1 ( 9KOs), Mason meets a recent IBF junior lightweight titleholder who lost his belt to Anthony Cacace in 2024.

The 34-year-old Cordina rallied with unanimous decision triumphs last year over Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz and Garbriel Flores Jnr.

If Cordina wins this where would it rank in UK World title upset wins this year?

We had Kelly beat Murtazaliev & Smith beat Matias.

Which would you put as 1, 2 & 3?

I’d definitely put Cordina as 1 as everyone thinks he’s past it at 34

Abdullah Mason-Joe Cordina to be announced for July 4 in Cleveland

Abdullah Mason’s first WBO lightweight title defence, against Wales’ Joe Cordina, is being finalised for Cleveland’s Rocket Arena on July 4.

Mason won the vacant title in an entertaining contest against Sam Noakes of England in November, and it is Cordina – the former IBF junior-lightweight champion – who will travel to fight him in his hometown.

The 22-year-old Mason is widely recognised as one of the world’s most promising fighters. His being matched with Cordina, 34, at the home of the NBA team the Cleveland Cavaliers is in part a reflection of his promoters Top Rank recently agreeing a broadcast deal with DAZN, the long-term broadcast partner of Matchroom, who have long guided Cordina.

Cordina lost his title in a stoppage defeat by Anthony Cacace in May 2024, but has since rebuilt via two victories at lightweight, over Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz and Gabriel Flores Jnr, under his new trainer Gary Lockett. It was reported at the start of April that he was in negotiations to fight Mason.

Noakes, incidentally, returned to the ring on Sunday evening when he defeated the Mexican Benito Sanchez Garcia inside two rounds.

Bruce Carrington to face Rene Palacios in Cleveland in July

Bruce Carrington, along with Abdullah Mason and Delante "Tiger" Johnson, take part in a press conference on Tuesday

Bruce Carrington is expected to defend his WBC featherweight title against Rene Palacios in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 4. The contest is yet to be officially announced, with ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reporting the fight on social media, citing a source.

Meanwhile, Top Rank has scheduled a “special announcement” press conference for Tuesday at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The list of participants includes Carrington, along with WBO lightweight champion Abdullah Mason and his four brothers, collectively known as the Mason Brothers, and U.S. Olympian and welterweight contender Delante “Tiger” Johnson.

Also in attendance are Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb and Top Rank Vice President of Boxing Operations Carl Moretti.

- Brooklyn’s 29-year-old Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) claimed the vacant title by ninth-round knockout of Carlos Castro on the Lopez vs Stevenson undercard in January.

- Mexico’s 25-year-old Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs) is coming off a split decision victory over Sulaiman Segawa, also in January.

- 22-year-old southpaw Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) of Bedford, Ohio, earned his belt last November on the undercard of Benavidez vs Yarde, defeating Sam Noakes by unanimous decision.

- 27-year-old Cleveland native Johnson (17-0, 8 KOs) was last in action in November, stopping Nicklaus Flaz in the fourth round.

Event details, including ticket information and opponents for Mason and Johnson, are expected to be announced at the press conference.

importance wise smith over matias was a big win, but surprignsly matias was only a very very narrow fave, was almost even money. dalton had a pretty good run of form and paro showed it could be done against matias i guess. i was surprised it wasnt at least a bit wider given the fight was on a usa card being promoted for matias basically. excellent win for dalton, shame it got so underpromoted

i think i would be more surprised by cordina winning here than the other two. the trajectory of cordina and mason is heavily in mason's favour, he's much younger and very fresh in his career still, and while cordina's a good fighter i dont see anything particular about him that stands out as a threat. nokes is better than cordina atm and stylstically was more of a problem for mason than cordina will be i think

also the ring ambassador thing over and over is kinda corny

Abdullah Mason defense vs. Joe Cordina officially set for Cleveland

Abdullah Mason will make the first defense of his lightweight title in front of a novel but favorable boxing audience.

Mason will get his first true hometown date when he defends against former titleholder Joe Cordina on July 4 at Cleveland State’s Wolstein Center, promoter Top Rank announced Tuesday in a press conference at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The card will be broadcast on TNT and DAZN in the U.S. and on DAZN worldwide as part of their inaugural “The Fight” monthly live boxing series.

The 22-year-old Mason, 20-0 (17 KOs), is boxing’s youngest current male belt holder. He won a 12-round unanimous decision over then-unbeaten Sam Noakes in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this past November. Previously, Mason fought in Westlake (a Cleveland suburb), but the Cordina fight will mark his first in “The Land.”

“Top Rank’s had a long history of building guys in their hometown,” said Carl Moretti, Top Rank’s vice president of boxing operations. “There’s nothing better.”

Cleveland arguably hasn’t hosted a fight card of this magnitude since 1975, when Chuck Wepner famously knocked down Muhammad Ali, which ultimately ended in an Ali stoppage win – but also served as Sylvester Stallone’s inspiration for the “Rocky” franchise.

Also in the Mason-Cordina event will be featherweight titleholder Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington’s defense against Rene Palacios in the co-feature; Cleveland native and U.S. Olympian Tiger Johnson facing Christopher Guerrero at welterweight; Deric “Scooter” Davis taking on Carlos Ramos at lightweight; and two of Mason’s brothers – lightweight Abdurrahman Mason and junior lightweight Ibrahim Mason – in separate fights on the undercard.

“July 4 is the homecoming that my brothers and I have been anticipating since before we turned pro,” Abdullah Mason said. “I’m ready to experience all of my city’s support in one building, and I have an appetite for smoke.”

Cordina, 19-1 (9 KOs), is a 34-year-old from Cardiff, Wales, coming off wins over Gabriel Flores Jnr and Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz since falling in a stoppage loss to Anthony Cacace last May that cost him his junior lightweight strap. The win over Flores – in Flores’ hometown of Stockton, California – is particularly notable under the circumstances.

“This is a massive test for me, but it’s one that I’m more than capable of coming through with flying colors,” Cordina said. “Abdullah Mason is a very good fighter, and he’s going to do big things in boxing, but I’m going to mess up the homecoming. I’m looking to come over, rip the title away from him, and take it back to the U.K. It’s a massive fight for boxing, and I’m looking to become a three-time two-weight world champion.”

Bruce Carrington to defend featherweight belt against Rene Palacios

WBC featherweight champion Bruce Carrington's first defense is set.

The Brooklyn native will take on Rene Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs) on the undercard of Abdullah Mason vs. Joe Cordina on July 4 at Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Mason's hometown.

For Palacios, ranked No. 12 by the WBC, a fight against Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) represents a significant step up in competition. In his most recent bout, the 25-year-old Mexican defeated Sulaiman Segawa by a split decision.

Carrington, The Ring’s No. 3-ranked 126-pounder, took home his first world title on January 31 by overcoming a few shaky moments to stop Carlos Castro in the ninth round at Madison Square Garden.

Joining Carrington on the undercard will be his good friend and highly ranked welterweight contender Delante Johnson. The 2020 Olympian will take on Christopher Guerrero.

Mason on Cordina: ‘Everything he does, I do better’

Abdullah Mason is returning home for his first title defense.

The WBO lightweight champion will face Joe Cordina on July 4 at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center, Top Rank announced on Tuesday at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Mason vs. Cordina headlines the first “The Fight” event, which will stream on DAZN and TNT.

It also marks Top Rank’s first card on national television in the U.S. since Xander Zayas beat Jorge Garcia Perez by unanimous decision to win the vacant WBO 154-pound title on July 26 on ESPN. Cordina wasn’t in attendance, but he sent a video saying he planned to spoil Mason’s homecoming bout. Mason will be fighting in Cleveland for the first time as a pro.

“It sounds cool right now, but I know I’m going to have fun on July 4,” Mason said in response to Cordina. “As soon as that bell rings, I’m going to see everything that I see when I’m in the gym when I step in there with my brothers and everything that we watch of Joe. I’m going to have fun doing what I do, and he’s not going to expect whatever it is that I have coming for him.”

WBC featherweight champion Bruce Carrington and undefeated welterweight and 2020 U.S. Olympian Tiger Johnson were at the press conference alongside Mason. Top Rank also announced that Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) will make his first title defense against Rene Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs), and Johnson (17-0, 8 KOs), who is also a Cleveland native, will face Christopher Guerrero (16-0, 9 KOs).

Undefeated lightweight Deric “Scooter” Davis (11-0, 10 KOs) will face Carlos Ramos (18-4-1, 10 KOs) in an eight-round clash, and Mason’s brothers, Abdurrahman Mason (2-0, 2 KOs) and Ibrahim Mason (2-0, 2 KOs), will also be on the card.

“I've been in the gym and training with my brothers since I was nine years old,” Mason said. “My memories are always like traveling with them and giving me that support and making me better at what I do inside and outside of the ring. Anything we did inside or outside of Cleveland, they always supported me.”

Mason (20-0, 17 KOs), 22, won the vacant WBO title with a thrilling unanimous decision victory over Sam Noakes on Nov. 22. The win made Mason boxing’s youngest male champion at 21. The dynamic southpaw is The Ring’s No. 5-ranked lightweight.

Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs), of Cardiff, Wales, previously held the IBF 130-pound title. He cemented himself as the top contender for Mason’s belt in his U.S. debut with a unanimous decision over Gabriel Flores on Dec. 13.

“He's definitely a volume puncher,” Mason said of Cordina. “He has some good offense. He's quick. He’s got some good feet. He's well-rounded at what he does, but everything he does, I do better.”

Abdullah Mason, Bruce Carrington make title defenses on July 4

Abdullah Mason and Bruce Carrington will both fight on July 4

Abdullah Mason and Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington will officially return for world title defenses on Saturday, July 4, with the card airing live on both DAZN and TNT.

The TNT broadcast will be exclusive to those in the U.S., while DAZN will have the fights worldwide for all subscribers.

The show will be held at Cleveland’s Wolstein Center. Mason is from nearby Bedford.

Mason (20-0, 17 KO) will make the first defense of his WBO lightweight title, which he won last November, against Joe Cordina (19-1, 9 KO), a former super featherweight titlist who is 2-0 since moving up to 135 lbs last summer.

Carrington (17-0, 10 KO) is also making a first title defense, putting his WBC featherweight belt on the line against Rene Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KO), who isn’t really seen as a serious world-level contender going in, but will have the chance to change some minds about that.

Both Mason and Carrington will be clear favorites in those fights.

Also on the card, Cleveland native and former Olympian Tiger Johnson will face Christopher Guerrero in a good matchup of unbeaten welterweight hopefuls.

Abdullah’s brothers Abdurrahman Mason and Ibrahim Mason will also be in action in separate four-round bouts.

Joe Cordina plans to mess up Abdullah Mason’s homecoming to take his title back to the UK

Abdullah Mason returns home for world title defense against Joe Cordina

Bruce Carrington to defend WBC Featherweight World Title against Rene Palacios in co-feature

Boxing’s youngest world champion is set to make his first defense in front of a hometown crowd on the 250th anniversary of American independence as part of TNT Sports and DAZN’s inaugural The Fight event, a new monthly live boxing series.

Abdullah Mason will defend his WBO lightweight world title against Welsh former world champion Joe Cordina on Saturday, July 4 at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center.

The Fight: Mason vs. Cordina will be broadcast on TNT and DAZN co-exclusively in the US, and on DAZN Worldwide.

In the co-feature, Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington puts his WBC featherweight world title on the line against Mexico’s Rene Palacios.

Additionally, Cleveland native and U.S. Olympian Tiger Johnson takes on fellow unbeaten Christopher Guerrero in a 10-round welterweight battle.

And undefeated lightweight knockout artist Deric “Scooter” Davis (11-0, 10 KOs) returns in an eight-round clash against Carlos Ramos (18-4-1, 10 KOs).

The Mason-Cordina, Carrington-Palacios, Tiger-Guerrero and Davis-Ramos fights will be broadcast LIVE beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Matchroom Boxing, tickets go on sale Friday, May 8, at 12 p.m. ET via Ticketmaster.com.

“This is a major moment for Abdullah Mason as he makes the first defense of his world title in front of his hometown fans,” said Top Rank President Todd duBoef. “Joe Cordina is a proven former world champion with the Olympic and professional experience to take him into deep waters. With Bruce Carrington defending his crown and Cleveland’s Tiger Johnson returning home as well, each against unbeaten contenders, this will be a special Independence Day celebration for the city and a fitting launch of TNT Sports and DAZN’s The Fightseries.”

Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) rose quickly from prospect to world champion. Following an amateur career of roughly 80 bouts, he debuted at 17 in November 2021. Four years later, he captured the WBO crown by dominating unbeaten Brit Sam Noakes last November in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

That triumph capped a breakout 2025 that began with a fourth-round stoppage of Manuel Jaimes in February, followed by a sixth-round TKO over Carlos Ornelas in April, and a fifth-round destruction of Namibian veteran Jeremia Nakathila in June.

Mason said, “July 4th is the homecoming that my brothers and I have been anticipating since before we turned pro. I’m ready to experience all of my city’s support in one building, and I have an appetite for smoke. So if you love boxing and you’re ready for some smoke, then the Wolstein on July 4th is the place to be. It’s a cookout at the Wolstein, and the clock is ticking. You’re all invited to your world champion’s first homecoming, and you don’t want to miss it.”

Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs) enters his third lightweight assignment seeking a world title in a second weight class. The 34-year-old scored a highlight reel second-round knockout over Kenichi Ogawa to win the IBF title at 130 pounds in 2022 but was stripped before his first defense due to a hand injury.

He regained it with a decision over Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in 2023 before losing it to Irish hero Anthony Cacace last May following a controversial knockdown after a punch during the break. The 2016 Olympian has since recorded victories over Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz and Gabriel Flores Jr. in Flores’ hometown.

Cordina said, “This is a massive test for me, but this it’s one that I’m more than capable of coming through with flying colors. Abdullah Mason is a very good fighter, and he’s going to do big things in boxing, but I’m going to mess up the homecoming. I’m looking to come over, rip the title away from him, and take it back to the U.K. It’s a massive fight for boxing, and I’m looking to become a three-time, two-weight world champion.”

“This is such a great fight,” said Eddie Hearn, Chairman of Matchroom Sport. “Abdullah is a tremendous talent and a real star for the future, but Joe has been there, done it and got the t-shirt. Joe showed in California that he’s not afraid to fight in hostile territory and that he still has plenty left in the tank at the top level, and this is a massive chance for him to become a two-weight World champion. This is yet another fantastic fight on DAZN made by Top Rank and Matchroom, and this year, the Fourth of July fireworks will be coming from the Welsh Wizard.”

-------------------

Bruce Carrington vs Rene Palacios

Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) is Brownsville, Brooklyn’s latest world champion, following a path once traveled by the likes of Mike Tyson and Zab Judah. A four-year pro, his 2025 campaign produced a third-round stoppage of Jose Enrique Vivas in March and a unanimous points verdict over Mateus Heita in July to win the WBC interim title before becoming full champion with a brutal ninth-round stoppage of Carlos Castro in January.

Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs) is a rugged Mexican contender who earned his first title opportunity with a decision win over common opponent Sulaiman Segawa.

Carrington said, “The Shu Shu Show is coming to Ohio for the first title defense! It’s The Shu World Order!”

Palacios said. “I’m very excited because, thank God, I now have the opportunity to fight for a world title. I’m not going to let this opportunity slip away. I made a promise to my mother that one day I would become a world champion, and I’m going to keep it. I know Carrington is a great fighter, and he’s proven that, but this time he’s facing someone different from what he saw against Sagawa.”

-------------------

Tiger Johnson vs Christopher Guerrero

Tiger (17-0, 8 KOs) represented the U.S. at the 2020 Olympics and signed with Top Rank in November 2021. As a super lightweight, he compiled 14 wins before moving up to welterweight last year, where he registered wins over Kendo Castañeda and Tarik Zaina before delivering his most significant result to date, a fourth-round TKO of Nicklaus Flauz in November.

Guerrero (16-0, 9 KOs is a Mexican born resident of Montreal, Canada who makes his U.S. debut after going 4-0 with two knockouts in 2025.

Tiger said, “We’re bringing fireworks to the Land of the Heartless. I’ve been waiting to fight at home for years, and I can’t wait to show out on July 4. Cleveland knows what I bring every time I step in the ring, and this is my moment to put my stamp on the city. I’m ready to represent the 216 and let everybody know who the next world champion from Cleveland is going to be.”

Guerrero said, “This is the moment I’ve been waiting for my whole life. It’s long overdue. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to collect a paycheck. I’m here to take what’s mine.”

-------------------

The Mason Brothers

Undercard action will feature two of Mason’s brothers in separate four-round fights, as Abdurrahman Mason (2-0, 2 KOs) sees action in a lightweight contest and Ibrahim Mason (2-0, 2 KOs) competes in a super featherweight bout.

WBO lightweight titleholder Abdullah Mason’s Cleveland homecoming is official.

He will make his first defense against former junior lightweight titleholder Joe Cordina in the main event of a Top Rank card on July 4 (DAZN and TNT, 8 p.m. ET) at Cleveland University’s Wolstein Center, the promoter announced on Tuesday, confirming last month’s Fight Freaks Unite report.

Also on the card, WBC featherweight titlist Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington will make his first defense against Rene Palacios in the co-feature.

The four-fight main card will be simulcast on TNT in the United States as the first episode of the recently announced monthly series “The Fight” on which a DAZN card will also air on the linear basic cable channel, returning men’s championship boxing to linear television for the first time since the end of Top Rank’s deal with ESPN last July.

“This is a major moment for Abdullah Mason as he makes the first defense of his world title in front of his hometown fans,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “Joe Cordina is a proven former world champion with the Olympic and professional experience to take him into deep waters.”

Top Rank also hosted a news conference on Tuesday at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, where Mason was joined by Mayor Justin M. Bibb, Carrington, Cleveland welterweight contender Tiger Johnson, who will also be on the card, and Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti.

Mason (20-0, 17 KOs), who at 22 is the youngest active world titleholder, was 21 when he won an action-packed and highly competitive unanimous decision over England’s then-unbeaten Sam Noakes to claim the vacant title on Nov. 22 on the David Benavidez-Anthony Yarde card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“July 4th is the homecoming that my brothers and I have been anticipating since before we turned pro,” said the southpaw Mason, whose two brothers, lightweight Abdurrahman Mason (2-0, 2 KOs) and junior lightweight Ibrahim Mason (2-0, 2 KOs), will also compete in separate four-rounders. “I’m ready to experience all of my city’s support in one building, and I have an appetite for smoke.

“So if you love boxing and you’re ready for some smoke, then the Wolstein on July 4th is the place to be. It’s a cookout at the Wolstein, and the clock is ticking. You’re all invited to your world champion’s first homecoming.”

As for Mason’s thoughts on Cordina, “He’s definitely a volume puncher. He has some good offense, quick, and has good feet. I would say he’s well rounded in what he does. But everything he does, I do better.”

Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs), 34, of Wales, saw his second IBF 130-pound title reign end by upset eighth-round knockout to Anthony Cacace in May 2024 in Riyadh.

After the defeat, Cordina moved up to lightweight and has won two fights in a row, most recently by unanimous decision over Gabriel Flores Jr. in December in Flores’ hometown of Stockton, California.

“This is a massive test for me, but this it’s one that I’m more than capable of coming through with flying colors,” Cordina said. “Abdullah Mason is a very good fighter, and he’s going to do big things in boxing, but I’m going to mess up the homecoming. I’m looking to come over, rip the title away from him, and take it back to the U.K. It’s a massive fight for boxing, and I’m looking to become a three-time, two-weight world champion.”

Said Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, Cordina’s promoter: “Abdullah is a tremendous talent and a real star for the future, but Joe has been there, done it and got the t-shirt. Joe showed in California that he’s not afraid to fight in hostile territory and that he still has plenty left in the tank at the top level, and this is a massive chance for him to become a two-weight world champion.”

Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs), 29, of Brooklyn, New York, dazzled in a ninth-round knockout of Carlos Castro to win the vacant title on Jan. 31 in New York on the Shakur Stevenson-Teofimo Lopez undercard.

“We are no stranger to collaborating in Cleveland,” Carrington said. “Cleveland and Brooklyn both have notorious thugs. Right now it’s the perfect time to introduce myself to a place I’ve never fought in before. ‘TheShu Shu Show’ is going to be bringing fireworks as everyone knows.”

Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs), 25, of Mexico, is stepping up in class for his second fight in a row in the United States.

“I’m very excited because, thank God, I now have the opportunity to fight for a world title,” Palacios said. “I’m not going to let this opportunity slip away. I made a promise to my mother that one day I would become a world champion, and I’m going to keep it.”

Also on the card, welterweight contender Tiger Johnson (17-0, 8 KOs), 27, a 2020 U.S. Olympian from Cleveland, will fight Christopher Guerrero (16-0, 9 KOs), 25, of Canada, in a 10-rounder.

“I’ve been waiting to fight at home for years, and I can’t wait to show out on July 4,” Johnson said. “Cleveland knows what I bring every time I step in the ring, and this is my moment to put my stamp on the city. Cordina accepts it's now or never to inflict Mason's first loss

Joe Cordina admits he needs to get his hands on Abdullah Mason before the 22-year-old world champion reaches his peak.

Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs), The Ring's No. 10-rated lightweight, is scheduled to face No. 5-rated Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) for his WBO title headlining Cleveland's Wolstein Center on Independence Day.

Having racked up two victories since moving back up to 135 pounds, the Welshman has positioned himself as Mason's mandatory challenger and rebounded in the wake of his stoppage loss by Anthony Cacace in May 2024.

That was the first defeat of Cordina's professional career, costing him his IBF junior lightweight title at a time where he discussed an interest in challenging himself against the division's top names stateside.

Now he has the chance to become a two-weight world champion with a victory over Mason, who is the sport's youngest male world champion. Cordina, 12 years the Ohioan's senior at 34, believes timing is on his side against the fast-rising talent.

During this week’s episode of Inside The Ring, an honest Cordina said: "He's an up-and-coming fighter but a world champion, and he will go on to do great things.

"But I think if I'm to beat him, it's now, and I've got to get him now, before he gains the experience, his man power, man strength and all that sort of thing.

"I think if I waited another 18 months that might have been a very sticky situation for myself because I'm only getting a little bit older while he's going to be in his prime in a minute. That's when it will be very hard for anyone to beat him.”

Cordina will be Mason's second successive British opponent following the American southpaw's November 22 victory over Sam Noakes at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Maidstone, Kent native, who had never lost, produced a gutsy performance but could not prevent Mason from claiming the vacant WBO title via unanimous decision after 12 hard rounds.

But Cordina, a two-time world champion at 130 pounds, has warned Mason that he represents a different proposition entirely.

On Mason’s performance against Noakes, he said: "For me, he looked good. I don't think it was close, like a few people have been saying to me.

"Mason definitely won clearly by a few rounds but he was getting hit. No disrespect to him but I'm not Sam Noakes. I'm a lot faster, a lot smarter ... I'm not going to just plod forward, just try and bully him. I'm going to use my boxing brain."

"I haven't had 180-odd amateur fights and been to an Olympic Games and won a European medal, one of six people in Britain to ever do it, and then won two world titles within 16 fights… I haven't done all that without having a boxing brain and a good IQ and being an average fighter.

"A lot of people are writing me off, but I don't mind that. The pressure's on him. It's 4th of July, it's in his hometown, it's a homecoming and his first defense. I've just got to go out there, do everything I've trained for. I believe in myself, I know what sort of fighter I am and know what I can do.

"Listen, he's very young. He's had a lot of fights for his age but, based on the calibre he's been in with, he's inexperienced in that sense. You haven't been in the trenches. I don't believe that Sam Noakes fight was a fight that went to the trenches but I think I can take him there.”

Carrington: Plan is to face Espinoza in full unification fight

Bruce Carrington would’ve preferred a featherweight title unification fight next.

Coming off his resounding ninth-round knockout of Carlos Castro on January 31 at Madison Square Garden, adding another 126-pound championship to the WBC belt he won that night appealed to the unbeaten Brooklyn native more than any other option. Carrington also wanted to remain as active as possible in 2026.

Once Carrington realized fights against fellow titleholders Rafael Espinoza (WBO), Brandon Figueroa (WBA) and Angelo Leo (IBF) wouldn’t materialize, he happily accepted an optional title defense against undefeated Rene Palacios on July 4 in Cleveland. Assuming Carrington gets past Palacios, though, he will refocus on securing a championship unification clash before the end of this year.

Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) and Mexico’s Espinoza (28-0, 24 KOs) are both promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. Rather than matching them next, Carrington senses it’s more likely he’ll fight Figueroa or Leo and Espinoza would battle the champion Carrington doesn’t box to set up a full unification bout between the winners.

“If I’m being honest, it looks like the way they’re planning it out is for me and Espinoza to meet at the end,” Carrington told The Ring. “That’s what it looks like, for it to be like a big crescendo, me and him having this dream fight. I think that’s what they’re trying to set up, so I’m totally not mad at that.”

Espinoza is The Ring’s No. 1 contender for an unclaimed championship. Leo is ranked second, Carrington third and Figueroa fifth.

Of the four featherweight champs, Carrington is the only one with a fight scheduled.

Leo (26-1, 12 KOs), of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was scheduled to make a mandated defense of his IBF belt against Ra’eese Aleem (23-1, 12 KOs) on May 9 in College Park, Georgia.

Their fight was abruptly canceled because Las Vegas’ Aleem came in almost three pounds overweight, which will allow Leo to pursue other opponents for what would be his first fight since May 2025.

Figueroa (27-2-1, 20 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, upset Nick Ball (23-1-1, 13 KOs) by 12th-round technical knockout to win the WBA belt February 7 in Ball’s hometown of Liverpool, England.

“I feel like Figueroa is one of those guys [who wants difficult fights],” Carrington said, “and I think I’ve seen some interest from Leo, who wouldn’t mind getting in the ring with me as well. So, I have hope. It’s just about getting all the logistics right, money and everything right at this point because this is a business at the end of the day. So, yeah, when the time comes for the fight to be made, I’m gonna do the best job possible to make it happen.”

DraftKings lists Carrington as a 9-1 favorite over Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs).

DAZN will stream their 12-round fight worldwide as part of the Abdullah Mason-Joe Cordina undercard from Wolstein Center on the campus of Cleveland State University. TNT will also televise the card headlined by Cleveland’s Mason in the United States as part of its new content partnership with DAZN.

Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) will make his first defense of the WBO lightweight title against Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs). Wales’ Cordina is the mandatory challenger for Mason’s 135-pound crown and a former IBF junior lightweight champ.

I've seen a few of Masons fights & he does love to come forward. I'm not sure how long his career will last but it will be fun while it does.

What do you think the best style to beat him is?

Cordina is a good boxer. If he can play matador to Masons bull I can see him losing a narrow points decision with a few people screaming ROBBERY.

That's a big if though....
