Nikita Tszyu vs. Oscar Diaz - May 6, 2026

Nikita Tszyu returns from Michael Zerafa controversy against Oscar Diaz

Nikita Tszyu is to fight Oscar Diaz of Spain at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, Australia on May 6.

The Australian endured his catchweight contest with Michael Zerafa in January concluding in the most controversial of no contests when a cut suffered by Zerafa following an accidental clash of heads led to him insisting that he could no longer see.

Tszyu-Zerafa represented the highest-profile occasion of his 12-fight career. The contest with the undefeated Diaz, 25, represents a step down in both profile and class.

“I love Newcastle,” the 28 year old said. “The arena has a special feeling to it, and every time I’ve fought here, the energy has been different. It feels like home.

“We’re breaking into the world stage now, taking on an international opponent, and we’re at the point where we need more experience. There’s a lot of attention around me, but not enough experience yet, so we need to lift that.

“I know enough about Diaz to understand how I need to approach the fight and what I need to do to win. The Newcastle crowd is always rowdy. There’s some kind of energy that flows through here. It feels pure Australian out here, and I love that.”

Tszyu’s promoters No Limit, who so recently oversaw his older brother Tim’s victory over Denis Nurja, said of the junior welterweight Nikita and Diaz’s first date of 17 outside of his home country: “Nikita is one of the fastest-rising names in Australian boxing and every time he fights, he keeps forcing his way higher up the world rankings. He’s unbeaten, he’s exciting, he’s dangerous and this is another huge chance for him to keep building towards the biggest fights in the division.

“There’s no question the Zerafa fight left a bad taste. It ended in controversy, it ended in frustration and it denied Nikita the type of statement he was ready to make. That’s why this return is so exciting. He’s hungry, he’s motivated and he wants to remind everyone exactly who he is.

“And to bring him back to Newcastle makes this even better. He’s already had some huge moments there and everyone remembers the Dylan Biggs fight, when he got off the canvas and showed exactly what he’s made of to win the Australian title. That was a massive moment in his rise and it’s one of the reasons Newcastle has become such an important city in Nikita’s story.”

Nikita Tszyu moves on from Zerafa saga, to face Oscar Diaz on May 6

Nikita Tszyu can focus on a fresh foe four months after his last fight against Michael Zerafa finished prematurely.

Tszyu (11-0, 9 KOs, 1 NC) is set to return on May 6 to take on Spaniard Oscar Diaz (16-0, 6 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight bout to headline a No Limit Boxing show at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Australia.

“We’re breaking into the world stage now, taking on an international opponent, and we’re at the point where we need more experience,” Tszyu said in a statement. “There’s a lot of attention around me, but not enough experience yet, so we need to lift that.

“I know enough about Diaz to understand how I need to approach the fight and what I need to do to win. The Newcastle crowd is always rowdy. There’s some kind of energy that flows through here. It feels pure Australian out here, and I love that.”

Tszyu, 28, fought Zerafa on January 16. The bout ended anticlimactically in the third round following an accidental clash of heads. Zerafa told the doctor that he could not see due to the foul, and the bout was ruled a No Contest.

Diaz, a 25-year-old from Andalucia, has fought exclusively in Spain throughout his seven-year career.

“Nikita is one of the fastest-rising names in Australian boxing and every time he fights, he keeps forcing his way higher up the world rankings,” No Limit Boxing head George Rose said in a statement. “He’s unbeaten, he’s exciting, he’s dangerous, and this is another huge chance for him to keep building toward the biggest fights in the division.

“There’s no question the Zerafa fight left a bad taste. It ended in controversy, it ended in frustration, and it denied Nikita the type of statement he was ready to make. That’s why this return is so exciting. He’s hungry, he’s motivated, and he wants to remind everyone exactly who he is.”

Tszyu is the younger brother of Tim Tszyu and son of Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu.

I have to admit I don't know that much about Diaz, although he has beat some decent Spanish-level competition (Gurria twice, di Stefano, Rojas, Suero, and the always-tricky Chiruta). It remains to be seen if that's his level or if he can give Tszyu, who is still a work in progress but with an upside, some problems during the fight.

Same. Tszyu is a guy with potential, but really leaves himself open to being hit a lot. So far he has faced a level of competition that hasn’t posed a real threat, so it will be interesting to see if Diaz can exploit it or whether Tszyu makes some adjustments as he improves his competition

Tim Tszyu sacks team to put full faith in Jeff Fenech

Tim Tszyu has appointed Australian great Jeff Fenech as his new trainer after dramatically sacking his team for the second time in three fights, and he will meet with him on Friday to discuss Fenech also becoming his manager.

The junior middleweight had defeated Anthony Velazquez and Denis Nurja with the Cuban Pedro Diaz as his trainer, with Mike Altamura and Darcy Ellis as his co-managers, and with Fenech as his advisor.

He is also nearing a date with Errol Spence in July, but two fights on from sacking his uncle and long-term trainer Igor Goloubev and his previous manager Glenn Jennings – having just lost for the second time to Sebastian Fundora – he has decided to overhaul his team again.

Fenech, who alongside the 31-year-old Tim’s celebrated father Kostya is widely considered Australia’s finest ever fighter, had been critical of the direction he was being taken in. They will work together for Spence in Sydney, Australia and potentially in Thailand; it was in Miami that Tszyu had been training under Diaz.

“I’ve watched Tim train for years and years and years,” Fenech told Boxing Scene. “I’m sure he will be fine. We just want to work hard. My first job is getting him mentally prepared; the physical part’s gonna be easy ‘cause Tim’s one of the hardest trainers that I’ve ever seen.

“It’s a combination of those two things. If we get him mentally right first, everything will fall into place.

“It was a big surprise. But I had – not criticism, because everyone does their own stuff – when I watched Pedro Diaz do the pads, you don’t have to move to punch somebody, and in the fight game you have to move your feet. Anybody can say it looked great making all these noises punching. Unless you’re moving your feet, in a real fight you’re not hitting anybody. I just said what’s true.

“In that first fight [the victory in December over Velazquez] Tim threw over 500 punches; landed 100. That’s like giving a soccer ball to Ronaldo and saying ‘Here’, and he misses 400 shots – and Tim’s closer [to the target] than Ronaldo is.

“I didn’t even ask him [why he decided to make a change]. I didn’t say ‘Why now?’. I just said ‘I would love to help you’. I only wanna help him ‘cause I know I can help him. If I thought that he was unfixable I would let him know that I think that he should do something else. But I know that he’s still got a whole lot of potential. He’s done all of this without anybody helping him or telling him what to do.

“Every time he sits in the corner, nobody tells him what he’s done right or what he’s done wrong or what he has to do. Every fight he’s ever had he’s only ever had Plan A, and because it worked for so long he’s never had to change it. But now he’s at that level – he’s fighting guys like Errol Spence, who’ll be next, and he’s got to have levels; he’s got to have an A, B and C plan, and I plan to give him that.

“Tim’s made a decision; he’s asked me to help him. I’m very, very excited and I’m looking forward to it.”

Fenech chose against attending the fight with Velazquez, and walked out of the victory over Nurja, earlier in April, before the final bell. Tszyu suffered a significant cut under his left eye that it was feared might delay the proposed date with Spence – perhaps the biggest of his career – but Fenech believes that he can be ready for it in July.

“I’m talking to Tim about [being his manager] tomorrow – we’ve got a meeting – and I think I’ll be doing that job as well,” Fenech explained.

“I’m very, very confident in his ability, his fitness, and everything else, so I’m more than happy with it. They’re talking about [the fight with Spence] being in July in Australia somewhere, so we’re just waiting, but I’m really excited for Tim.

“The first and foremost thing I think anybody should do with him is watch the fights he was dropped in [the defeats by Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev]; knocked out in; let him know why. Sit him down and explain what happened. I’ve watched those fights 100 times so I know what to say to him. The first thing we work on is fixing those areas where he’s very open as he was throwing a punch, and open for the left hook and a few other punches.

“It’s my job to put him in position and to make sure when we do the training, he gets the confidence where he’s doing it properly. He was just punching; coming straight back out in the middle of the ring. He’s giving people that opportunity [to punch him] and I want to make sure I fix that for him, and go from there.

“I’m really excited. I’m training a couple of boys – [Australian junior welterweight] Hass Hamdan, who’s a good prospect – and this is gonna make him better, because he’ll be one of Tim’s sparring partners. I’m really excited that I’ve got an opportunity to work with somebody that needs help, and I’m more excited about the challenge to make Tim a better fighter.

“We will train here in Australia, but I [also] have a training camp in Thailand where we can train.”

Nikita Tszyu on Oscar Diaz clash: I need rounds, want to be tested

Beat a Tszyu and transform your career. His father Kostya, a two-time world champion and 2011 Hall of Fame inductee, led the way while older brother Tim won the WBO junior middleweight title in 2023 and remains relevant at world level.

Three years younger and more introspective than your average contender, Nikita (11-0, 9 KOs, 1 NC) was controversially denied a career-changing moment against Michael Zerafa in January but deems the experience a blessing in disguise.

Closing that chapter of his budding journey without a cathartic ending to an unsavory family rivalry could've frustrated him. The 28-year-old takes it in stride and that response suits him best before welcoming Oscar Diaz (16-0, 6 KOs) to Newcastle, Australia on May 6.

Diaz, rated No. 7 with the EBU for Milan Prat's European title, leaves Spain next week to box as the away fighter for the first time. He could've chosen a different route entirely, but spoke excitedly this week about being paired up against the iconic Tszyu name.

While he's studied some film in preparation, Nikita expects a hard fight but isn't worried about what the Spaniard possesses. He's more concerned about show the improvements he's made, justifying stirring anticipation at just how high his ceiling could prove to be.

American former world champion trio Tim Bradley, Shawn Porter and Paulie Malignaggi are among the fighters-turned-analysts who believe 'The Butcher' can become a household name.

Fox Sports Australia claim his team privately believe he'll be ready to contest world titles in three fights' time, roughly next summer given his timeline. The man himself isn't concerned with any outside noise.

"I know I'm highly rated with the IBF but that's not a true reflection of where I see myself," he told The Ring.

"I'd say I'm around top-30 in the world. Oscar is like the seventh [he is the eighth] unbeaten guy I will have faced, they're all coming to win and make a name for themselves.

"I want to be tested, show what I've been working on over the last two years, improvements to my arsenal."

He acknowledges the internal battle between 'resting, just doing nothing' at home with family and being the breadwinner in a sport he must psych himself up for. Becoming the aggressive, violent boxer ruining someone else's dreams is a sharp mindset shift and emotionally taxing, not something that can be taken lightly.

Too often boxers are inactive when fit and available to compete. Tszyu endured a year-long layoff and required surgery on a serious left-hand injury in October 2024, though crunched Macedonia's Lulzim Ismaili with it en route to a first-round finish last August.

Currently rated No. 6 by the IBF and No. 9 with the WBO in an ever-changing 154-pound division, more people are taking notice.

If the criticism of Nikita is borne from lacking competitive rounds recently, then he wants this fight to change that. March was too soon a return window after the Zerafa fallout, so early May was a suitable compromise as Newcastle Entertainment Centre plays host.

He's visibly improving with each fight, more defensively measured and patient while competition has moved from domestic to international levels.

European opposition can be hit-or-miss as a barometer of just how good someone is, but it's a step in the right direction. Diaz will look to back up his bullish words and Nikita is at peace knowing he's only scratching the surface of his potential.

Oscar Diaz sees launchpad in upsetting Nikita Tszyu

Oscar Diaz has vowed to transform his career when on Wednesday he fights Nikita Tszyu.

The Spaniard has travelled for the first time in his so-far-16-fight career to be Tsyzu’s opponent at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, Australia, and enters by some distance his highest-profile fight.

Tszyu, 28 and of Australia, was being manoeuvred towards world level at 154lbs with January’s catchweight contest against his compatriot Michael Zerafa until it ended in a controversial no contest that has forced him to take an alternative route.

That Wednesday’s contest is on pay-per-view in Australia is a reflection of the hopes surrounding him, and the also-undefeated Diaz – 25 years old – is aware that he can potentially hijack that progress for himself.

“I’m very privileged to be here [in Newcastle],” he said. “I’ve been received very, very well, and I’m looking forward to going home with a lot of people knowing who I am.

“I’ve watched all his fights, and he’s never faced a man like me. He’s got nothing on me. I’m going to go all the limit, and I’m going to take him out early.”

Diaz has also spoken of using Wednesday’s fight to secure a future date with Nikita’s older and higher-in-profile brother Tim, who on July 25 in Sydney fights Errol Spence.

“After Wednesday, they’re going to be calling it ‘Diazcastle’ [Not ‘Tszyucastle’],” he also said.

Aussie boxer stuns by wearing a G-string to weigh-in as he prepares to fight Anthony Mundine's son

Queenslander Lance McDonald stole the show at the No Limit weigh-in ahead of Wednesday night's fights.

Nikita Tszyu is certainly the biggest name on the card, but that didn't stop the fighter nicknamed 'G-Banger' from becoming the highlight of Tuesday.

Main Event host Ben Damon only had time to warn fans to 'avert your eyes' as he introduced the Brisbane fighter.

The middleweight boxer gave all the fans in attendance an eyeful when he stripped off his tracksuit.

That revealed a skimpy black g-string, causing those around him to burst into laughter.

Even No Limit boss George Ross could be seen in stitches as McDonald approached the scales.

'I'll just give you a moment, ladies and gentlemen,' Damon joked as the laughter continued after McDonald had stepped off the scales.

'G-Banger' who currently holds a 1-4-1 professional record, weighed in at 68.76kg for his bout with Rahim Mundine.

Rahim is following in the footsteps of his father Anthony Mundine, who finished his stellar career with 48 wins and 11 losses.

The two will meet at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Wednesday on the undercard of Nikita Tszyu vs Oscar Diaz.

Nikita, son of Kostya Tszyu, weighed in at 69.40kg while his Spanish counterpart clocked in at 69.16kg.

The 28-year-old looked to be in great shape, and surprised fans with a new shaved head after appearing on Monday with a full head of hair.

Image

'This is like my helmet, in a way,' he said.

'It's a ritual. When I shaved my head last night I felt something change. Now I'm ready.'

The rising Aussie boxer said 'I'm ready to hurt him',' when asked if he had any last words for his opponent.

Speaking to Main Event in depth, Tszyu said of his father, 'He only gives me one piece of advice - don't get hit.

'That's all I've ever hear from him, and that's all you need to know.

'It's a simple sport.

'Hopefully I get the chance to maim (Diaz), put a lot of pain into someone's eyes.'

Nikita is set to head into Wednesday's fight without his brother Tim Tszyu by his side following a fall out prior to Tim's win over Denis Nurja.

Tim told Nikita not to show up at the fight according to Nikita, 'I don't want to get into it too much, I know you guys feed off the spicy drama and everything that's happening between us, but you are correct,' Nikita said when asked if Tim banned him from his fight.

Nikita has responded in kind when asked about Tim's presence at his bout with Diaz, 'I don't care. I don't care at this point.

'I'm not fussed about anything. My fight is my fight, I only really need my time.

'They're the ones I need behind me.'

Both Diaz and Tszyu enter Wednesday's fight undefeated and aiming to keep their loss column clear.

Rahim Mundine defeats Lance McDonald via decision
(49-46 x2, 48-47)

The son of The Man, Rahim "CJ" Mundine claimed a tight points victory over Lance McDonald, a decision which many in attendance disagreed with.

Mundine looked the more efficient fighter through the opening two rounds but McDonald battled back strongly to make a contest of it, although all three judges scored in favour of the same man.

Brent Walton and Jayden Vasica put on a show
(39-37 x2 Walton, 38-38)

Another Newcastle product in Brent Walton got the crowd on their feet with a hard-fought decision victory over a game Jayden Vasica.

From the opening bell of the four rounder, the pair traded wildly, with Walton finishing the stronger and getting the nod on two judges' card.

Kyron Dryden demolishes Hunter Ioane inside two rounds

Despite seven years out of the ring, Kyron Dryden didn't miss a beat in his grudge match with Hunter Ioane, scoring a dominant second-round KO victory.

Ioane hit the canvas following a right hand in the first round before a savage three-punch combination did the job in the second.

Brandon Grach returns with a KO

Just over six months on since announcing his retirement, heavyweight Brandon Grach returned to the pros with a stoppage victory over Caleb Tialu.

Grach landed a series of heavy right hands to the side of Tialu's head and the referee wisely stepped in during the third round.

Wayne Telepe outpoints Benjamin Amos
(39-37, 40-36, 38-38)

The pro-Amos local crowd gathered for the opener were left disappointed after Wayne Telepe claimed a majority decision victory.

In a close four-rounder, the pair traded wildly to end the bout but it was Telepe who came away with the victory.

Jack Bowen blasts out Tonga Tongotongo

Up against the formidable challenge of Tonga Tongotongo, Jack Bowen needed less than two rounds to come away with an eye-catching win.

The Victorian looked as if he'd been rocked earlier in the round, seeing Tongotongo pour on the pressure.

Bowen was able to weather the storm and a perfectly placed right hand put his man on wobbly legs, before a vicious combination ended the fight, with Tongotongo eating at least half a dozen big shots before the referee waved it off.

Kirra Ruston gets the job done early

Kirra Ruston enhanced his reputation as one of the most dangerous finishers in Australian boxing with a round three stoppage of Turkiye's Berkay Varol.

The Western Australian overcome a nasty cut over his left eye, caused by a head clash, to drop Varol twice via body shots, with the second enough to see referee Dean Cambridge call the fight.

Ruston moves to 9-0 with nine KOs.

He did look sharp again tonight and the handling the adversity of the cut, was a nasty one, was good for him.
A good step forward for him tonight.
Callum Peters was looking good after 4 against his American opponent too, but I think James had a good 5th. Next few rounds will be a test for two rising fighters

Callum Peters too much for Joeshon James

(100-89 x2, 99-90)

Peters couldn't put James away but scored a one-sided points victory, going the 10-round distance for the first time in his young career.

Five rounds down and Peters is clearly on top, having dropped James with a left hook to the body in the fourth round. The American is still looking dangerous at times but Peters would be well clear on the card.

My take away from the card. Nikita has more aptitude for learning than Tim. Seems to be developing more skills.
Callum Peters is young and has lots of potential but Kirra Ruston is the genuine prospect. How good is the Boxing Shop going. Bowen, Ruston and Teramoana so exciting times ahead.
Reason I bought the card? Watch the prospects and their was no ex football players on it.

We bought the card also, we don't do that often. I enjoyed it and my take is that Nikkita is a good prospect and is improving in every fight. His division is stacked however and I think he is one or two fights away from a top tier fight.
I liked the way also he stayed around and signed autographs and took photos. Also he doesn't trash talk which I like.
The Mundine fight was interesting I didn't think the decision was all that bad, although I must admit I didn't see the and second and most of the third round because of storms we had at around that time.
All and all a good card and I also liked the fact that there were no BS footballers and no real mismatches.

I like how Nikita's team is moving him along. It seems to me that every fight is a step up and an opportunity for him to implement what's been worked on in the gym. I also have to admit, it would have been fun to see how the Zerafa fight played out. I have my ideas but ...

Staying around to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans is a great way to connect with them and show you appreciate their support. I also like that he's not a trash talker, most of which in this day and age is outlandish bluster and/or just plain stupid.
