Cory Spinks vs Antonio Margarito (2004)

Post by 2128778 »

Had Spinks faced Margarito instead of Judah in spring 2004...

Spinks was fresh off his win over Ricardo Mayorga, where he unified WBC/WBA/IBF belts. Back then, that was enough to gain the distinction of The Undisputed champ. Today, he would've needed to fight Marg for the WBO belt to become one.

Margarito was at the stage, where he was defending his WBO belt against likes of Andrew Lewis, Hercules Kyvelos and wasn't really noticed by top-top fighters. However, he already gained some recognition and his fights were often featured on HBO.

Who would've won between Spinks and Margarito?

Margarito kept too busy of a pace for Spinks. Spinks had pretty good defense, but offered back very little offensively. I can't see Spinks being able to last the distance in this. I'd take Margarito by TKO around the 8th or 9th round in a pretty one sided contest.

I might favour Margarito, too. Though, I'd probably pick him by decision. He gets it by being busier. Might be a controversial one. That said, Spinks was on an excellent run at that point.

I often look back at Margarito's career and thinking that if he wouldn't have been on the outside looking in with his WBO belt back in mid-2000's and had he gotten Mayorga in 2003, Spinks in 2004 and/or Judah in 2005-2006 - his resume could've become truly stellar.

I'd have picked him to win all these fights. And likely, he would've been Undisputed.

I remember HBO guys were pumping the drum
