Calzaghe whining about the BBC Sports personality award

Post by Goz »

On Radio 5 live this morning saying he won't win it because he's a winner and the British public don't like winners!

Bullshit Joe, there are a couple of reasons:

1 - You've only fought once this year, you really need to put together a 3/4 fight year, probably with a good domestic win as well as a Lacy type win.

2 - Until very recently you've only fought on Sky, most general sport fans don't have a clue who you are.

Bunce is actually on the radio right now talking about it.

Yes I can't see anything happening between now & then, the Ashes start too late to have any effect on Clarke winning. He certainly gets my vote.

Maybe if Calzaghe impressively puts down Bika the British public will finally realise that he is a legend? Nah.

Does anyone know what the current shortlist is for this 'most coveted' of awards? There must be a severe lack of worthy recipients.

Looks like JC has blown any chance he had with that silly comment. Only losers win it? Not always the case Joe, but in lean years there has to be a beneficiary.

He also lacks personality!

Even though it's hardly been a vintage year for British sport,it would take a massive achievement for a boxer to win it.
Hatton deserved it when he dethroned Tszyu to become a world champion in his sport, but was overlooked due to a set of English 'athletes'(and I use that term very loosely!)beating Australia in a series, played only between them two nations, for a trophy the size of an egg cup :-?

The title used to mean something, but when GREG RUSEDSKI and the like started to win it,well.......

It certainly appears to be the case that you have to be involved in a high profile sport or be a high profile sportsman to win this award. Afterall Steve Redgrave had to win 5 consecutive gold medals before he got the nod. And he wasn't shy in his acceptance speech in pointing that out.

JCs problem is that he is just not remotely likeable & never comes across as a good humoured or nice guy.

The whole award is wank.

Think we've had this discussion before. If you're not on terrestrial telly, you are really going to struggle and it's a massive help if you're on the BBC.

Phil Taylor not even being INVITED to the awards shows what a lot of shite it is. If he'd been on the Beeb for the past decade, I suspect we might have seen the portly Potter.

Still, I'll watch it. Good TV.

Haven't watched it in years, load of old twaddle. Who the feck needs it, sport already has it's own awards, we don't need this glorified sports 'Oscars' to prove who is the nuts, sport already has medals, trophies and championships.

I think it's generally good tv, espeically when it's been a good sporting year with an Olympics, world cup etc, just a nice review of the year. When someone like Kelly Holmes won it's a good accolade for a true sporting great from these isles BUT yes I agree the pair of gold medals she won makes the BBC bauble pale in insignificance...

I wish i knew what that means!

About the award, Clarke is a big favourite, and the ryder cup team will most likely pick up the team award as well.

It means I am everywhere and very verbal. At least that is what Riddick means I think.

Just to point out though Riddick, that vociferous of course means loud and angry in tone, rather than merely wordy and given to loquaciousness.

Witter-Corley preview: Witter looks for the limelight
by James McDonnell
Sep 14th 2006

Junior Witter is a man coming to the end of a long, dark and at times depressingly circuitous tunnel.

“When I look back at my career and who I boxed and when I boxed them, should I have been in the ring with half of them, then no! But I've had to do it, and any time I haven't come out with a sparkling performance, someone's slagged me off somewhere down the line, or a lot of people have, and it's frustrating but I just look at it and think ‘life's like that' some people are born with a million pound in the bank and some people are born with nothing, and in the boxing game I'm the equivalent to having born with nothing and having to work to get me money.”

Although an undoubtedly talented fighter, a British, Commonwealth and European Champion to boot, he has long toiled in the squat shadow of one Ricky Hatton, the man considered by most outside of the Witter camp, as the pre-eminent 140 lber campaigning in the UK, and for some the best fighter in the UK.

I can remember only too well one of my first press gigs several years ago, I think it may have been at the MEN Arena when Ricky Hatton fought former IBF champ Freddie Pendleton, when the ubiquitously vociferous Brendan Ingle was venting his spleen loud and long to the press people in attendance about the ‘bloody liberty' that was Warren's handling of Junior's career.

I did, but as I said, the phrase means loud and angry/opinionated. I think that is a fair description of Brendan Ingle, who not only always has something to say, but it's usually ire filled and most certainly always delivered with a loud booming voice.

Anyone who has ever been ringside when Ingle is in the corner or near the ring apron will attest to the fact that my description is pretty true to form.

I wondered why you kept using that line, I can only assume you were filled with admiration. It's amazing what a bit of time and a thesaurus can do for you. :TU:

I know its very sad and all that, but winning an award, for playing golf three weeks after your wife died isn't right. Also i'd like to know how many times golfers, cricketers, and tennis players have won it compared to say footballers or people from much more popular sports.

Actually, I read something a couple of year's ago about how it's possible to make money on the betting exchanges on sports personality of the year. Consider tennis player Andy Murray. He was very long odds to win it early this year, then his odds dropped when he was at Wimbledon and now that he and his sport are in the public eye less his odds will be going out. By backing/laying at the right time one can set it up to not lose money on this event, but the trick is to follow someone who probably won't win it but will have some decent price fluctuations. A similar price pattern happened with Ricky Hatton last year!

I think the best way of doing this would have been to have backed Andy Murray in January then laid for more than the initial stake during Wimbledon when his price was lower then one would have guaranteed a profit whatever.

Since when?

He's right about Britain getting behind losers though.

In a Janurary2006 Issue of Boxing Monthly, even Froch said it and said Henman hasn't won fornicating squat.

The WBO and IBF belts are well better than some BBC award that was probably made in a Mexican Tin Factory.

The WBO is leagues above any tin facotry made BBC award.

This maybe going far but even the WBU/WBF/IBA and IBO are.

At least they look classy in a poser way.
