Corrales 5 pounds over!
By Rick Guzman
WBC lightweight champion Diego Corrales has weighed in five pounds over the lightweight limit and has two hours to drop the excess weight. Joel Casamayor weighed in at the division limit of 135. Stay tuned...

-----------------
Absolutely no chance he will make the weight IMO, If he fails to make the weight, will he suffer the same punishment as Castillo - it definately won't be long before he will be fighting at Light Welter.

What I do find odd, is that he returned for his jail time saying he could make Super Feather easy, and never as he said it is a struggle to make Lightweight. I wonder if he has put the training in?

Corrales is nearly 6ft though so can't blame him too bad if he can;t make it.

Wow. I agree Stu, surely he can't drop 5 pounds in 2 hours.

Did Chico skimp in training, or has he just outgrown the division? I'm not sure which, to be honest. I'm tempted to think that he didn't really take a third fight with a (perhaps sliding) Casamayor seriously......

Benn dropped 6.5 before the first Eubank fight in a couple of hours, but then benn was much bigger than Carrales

I can blame him, actually.

I found the "Oh, poor ickle wifebeater" schtick very hard to swallow around the time of the last two scheduled bouts with Castillo; I had never heard a guy villified like Castillo did for failing to make weight -- after all, it wasn't like Rosendo Alvarez versus Ricardo Lopez -- for Chrissakes, Castillo collapsed on the way to the scales!

I always assumed that if a guy could no longer make the weight but had at least tried (and I believe Alvarez did not) there would be a degree of sympathy for him.

Just because I'm a nasty piece of work, I hope there is a repeat of the outcry in certain quarters now everyone's favourite wife-beating skank has similarly tripped up in public.

There. Had to get that off my chest.

PS: What's the Spanish for "Come on Cassamayor!!!"?

Vayamos Casamayor. I think, but it could also be...Adelantado Casamayor.

What i find most worrying about this is the comment from Corrales' trainer Joe Goossen he said "Monday was his last meal and it was a little bit of tuna and small salad. He’s been sucking on ice chips since."

A trainer should try and protect his fighter, if Joe Goossen knew that Corrales hadn't eaten a proper meal for 3 or 4 days shouldn't he have taken some responsibility and called the fight off?
I'm sure he will still get his cut from the boxers' pay, even if the boxer gets injured in a fight he could and should have called off.

This statement from Corrales "Every day, I trained, ate salad and still weighed 142 pounds. I was actually afraid I was going to pass out today – I worked out three times with no food or water. I just got done working out for two hours and only lost half a pound. That pretty much sums it up. I pretty much killed myself to be here at this fight."

So was Goossen at these training sessions? should he have seen how his fighter wasn't going to make the weight without going beyond the point of danger?

I've always rated Goossen as a good trainer, but he has let himself down today.

How retarded are todays fighters to be not eating for 3 or 4 days just to make weight!

If its true that he hasnt eaten in 4 days then then the contest should be called off in my opinion.

No amount of rehydration post weigh in is going to give him adequate energy to navigate his way through a tough 12 round fight.

A real shame because their first match was a classic and their mutual dislike for eachother promised to make this fight another doozey.

How do fighters like Hatton get away with dehydrating without feeling sick or low on energy?

Hatton doesnt crash weight in the last couple of days before a fight - he takes it off in a sensible and monitored manner throughout his 12 week training camp.

Kerry Kayes is a fountain of knowledge regarding supplements and nutrition and I belive he helps Ricky get it right time and again.

Despite my earlier invective, I too think that if the lad hasn't eaten for days (!!!) then call the fight off.

It's not worth him getting hurt, is it? I mean, I don't like the bloke, but he doesn't need to go and get a life-threatening injury.

Im not really sure Hatton would dehydrate himself, His weight loss always seems controlled and managed well (so im led to believe anyway)

I dont know how other fighters manage it, Though i dont think its possible to do and then fight to your full potential. Its also a misconception that eating minuscule amounts would aid weight loss all it does is shut down your metabolism and send your body into starvation mode, Where it would store fluids and foods consumed whilst preparing for famine.

Remember - Hatton loses a lot of fat - he is a fat kid - fat and excess excess water.

It wasn't all that long ago that Corrales was claiming he could make 9 stone 4 comfortable. He blaimed his Mayweather defeat on the weight, but came back from his spell inside declaring he knew how to make the weight.

Yet, judging by the comments not only is Lightweight impossible, but Light Welter could be hard.

WBC strips Corrales of title belt

He fails to make the 135-pound limit, making tonight's bout against Casamayor a nontitle affair.

By CARLOS ARIAS
The Orange County Register

Arturo Gatti and Mickey Ward battled each other in three of the most brutal fights of the past decade.

They exchanged fists, but they never exchanged a cross word.

Today, Gatti and Ward are golfing buddies and good pals.

Diego "Chico" Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo had a two-fight series that rivaled the Gatti-Ward trilogy.

They never sold their fights with fake hype and trash talk and they grew to respect each other in and out of the ring.

But Corrales and Joel Casamayor never have been friends.

Corrales (40-3, 33 KOs) and Casamayor (33-3-1, 21 KOs) split a pair of classic fights and will meet for a third time tonight at 9 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Showtime.

Casamayor has verbally blasted Corrales at every opportunity. He has said Corrales has a "weak chin," that he is a "one-dimensional fighter" and that he plans to put Corrales "in a grave." Casamayor got more ammunition Friday when Corrales failed to make the 135-pound weight limit and was stripped of his WBC 135-pound title, turning tonight's bout into a nontitle fight.

Corrales has brushed off Casamayor's tough talk. However, it was hard for him to come up with an answer for failing to make weight when he cancelled his third fight against Castillo because Castillo failed to make weight for the second consecutive time against Corrales.

"I don't care," Corrales said. "He can say whatever he wants. He is going to be in the ring, and he will get a chance to prove it (tonight)."

The first fight featured three knockdowns and was stopped despite Corrales' protests because of severe cuts in Corrales' mouth. Corrales won a split decision in the rematch.

"Corrales talks a lot of garbage about me," Casamayor said. "I am going to put the mouthpiece through his mouth again. He loses every time he fights in October and he will again. He talks a lot of trash about my family. If he wants to fight on the street, too, we can do that."

Corrales said he doesn't know where the bad blood is coming from.

"I never brought anybody's family into this," Corrales said. "You guys can pump this kid's head with lies, and I will deflate them."

Corrales said he learned a lot from his two battles against Castillo.

"I learned to sit back, play it smart and take my time," Corrales said. "Let mistakes come to me. That is one thing I didn't do (against Casamayor). I expect a different game plan from him, and I will have to adjust as well. He is going to make alterations to his game plan. That will make me do the same to mine."

Casamayor said he learned a lot from Corrales' fights against Castillo, too.

"I learned that this guy (Corrales) comes one direction: forward," Casamayor said. "He is a one-dimensional fighter. I can beat him any way. I feel like I won both fights (against Corrales). I know him like my own son."

Corrales hasn't fought since his rematch against Castillo last October. He has had fights against Castillo postponed and then cancelled in the past year.

"The layoff has been awesome," Corrales said. "It was a needed break. I had camps in between to stay sharp. I'm happy, my body feels good."

Corrales and Casamayor have been in some of the best and most grueling fights over the past decade. Some believe all of those tough rounds can take a toll on a fighter's body and shorten his career.

"Tough fights take something away from you, but they make you a better fighter," Corrales said. "But, I have probably taken a lot more out of them than anything else."

The four blemishes on Casamayor's record have been either controversial or close decisions. Casamayor doesn't plan on leaving the outcome in the judges' hands this time.

"I don't see this fight going the distance," Casamayor said. "We're going to war and Corrales won't see the 12th round. We come to fight. The knockout will come

yep agree, everyone in Corrales' camp must have know he wouldn't make the weight, but if he doesn't fight then they don't get paid, nice people to have around Corrales. They will all feign horror if he had got injured after making the weight, even though they knew he had starved himself.

Corrales is an accident waiting to happen imo... his speech already seems a little slurred from what I've seen in recent interviews... the whole set up to this fight is madness... sure it wouldnt be good for the sport if it was cancelled, but what if Corrales gets hurt?... will that be any better??.... having said all that I'd still like to see this fight, anyone know where its showing?... Useless SKY isnt showing it ofcourse!! :x :x :x

I understand your concerns Topper but the fight needed to go ahead, it would have been a real body-blow to the sport if it fell through.

The best we can hope is that if Joel takes Corrales out it is clean and a one-punch deal (as unlikely as it may seem Joel can time Corrales for a decent shot as he has showed). Goosen can then pull his guy out and at the least the bill was saved.

If Corrales goes down and stumbles up Goosen may have to bite the bullet of responsibility and pull his man out prematurely. He can then hold his hands up and say he, as the trainer, messed-up and he excercised his authority to stop his guy getting hurt.
I was really looking foward to this fight, but after seeing the pictures of Corrales at the weigh in I have major concerns with this fight going ahead.
I know every boxer has to put themselves through alot to make weight, but Corrales has gone beyond that, he looks emaciated, no muscle tone in his body.
maybe the 24hrs to go till fight time will help re-hydrate him, hopefully he can get proper advice how to do this, not just drinking gallons of water.
One other thing that has me concerned is Casamayor isn't a KO puncher, so that could mean Corrales taking punishment in a distance fight and thats when injuries happen more.

I hope that tomorrow i can read a report of a good fight with no problems.

Casamayor has hurt Corrales plenty of time in the past, indeed he seems to be the puncher of the two on their two previous fights.

It's not once though, 2 wrongs make a right? Yet people were bashing Castillo & his camp for not coming forward sooner and asking for a catchweight. Corrales cheated just as much as Castillo did in their first fight. They were even if you like after Castillo came in overweight, do not lay the blame purely on Castillo for the little scale trick.

Now with Corrales coming in overweight ( expecting Casamayor to accept the fight) They are 2-1 to Corrales in the cheating stakes.

I just remember all the comments from Corrales camp calling Castillo very unprofessional for not making weight, "a true fighter makes weight"

Your last comment should be

Corrales is a cheat and should be punished as hard as Castillo was (not much  ) Castillo is a cheat and was punished
