Yuriorkis Gamboa and Guillermo Rigondeaux to Return to the Ring in May in Separate Bouts

A dose of vintage Cuban boxing will hit Miami on May 2, as two iconic figures of their generation, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Guillermo Rigondeaux, make their return to the ring to headline a card at the James L. Knight Convention Center.

Both former Olympics and world professional champions have signed one fight agreements with young promoter Matteo Attalla, owner of the renowned Boxer Gym in Miami. The event will be officially presented on Thursday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m. ET, during a press conference featuring all the key participants.

Gamboa (30-5, 18 KOs), 44, has not fought since 2022, when he was stopped by TKO against Isaac Cruz. The former unified featherweight champion spent several years in Cuba due to a legal process following a traffic accident. Although he was found not guilty, he could not leave the country until recently. His return to Miami coincides with signing with the promotion BKB Bare Knuckle Boxing, where he is expected to make his debut in June.

During his professional career, Gamboa won world titles at featherweight and challenged for a version of the lightweight world title, facing top level opponents such as Terence Crawford, Gervonta Davis, and Devin Haney, often competing above his natural weight class.

Rigondeaux (23-3, 16 KOs), 45, comes off a November 2024 first round stoppage of Dominican Dannis Aguero Arias to capture the WBC International Super Bantamweight title. Despite that win, a new world title opportunity never materialized.

Over the course of his career, Rigondeaux also featured in key bouts that defined his legacy, including his dominant 2013 victory over Nonito Donaire, which unified titles at super bantamweight, and his 2017 defeat to Vasiliy Lomachenko, in a two division jump that highlighted the risks of competing outside his natural weight class.

Both Gamboa and Rigondeaux built elite amateur careers, winning Olympic gold medals each before translating their success to the professional ranks, where they captured world championships.

Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa co-headline May 2

Two of the most notable Cuban professional boxers of this century will be featured on a May 2 show in Miami.

Guillermo Rigondeaux and Yuriorkis Gamboa are set to co-headline in separate bouts at the James L. Knight Center for an event the promoter is billing as “Havana Heat.”

This is their first time sharing the same bill in the paid ranks. Their opponents have not yet been named.

“Gamboa and Rigondeaux aren’t just accomplished fighters – they represent a boxing tradition that has produced some of the toughest, smartest and most respected champions in the sport,” Ron Johnson of American Dream Presents and Nothing But Sportz said in a press release.

“Cuban boxing carries real history, discipline and pride. To present both of these men on the same night – in a city like Miami that understands that culture – is something I take seriously. It’s an honor to bring two legends to this stage.”

Rigondeaux, 23-3 (16 KOs), is a 45-year-old former junior featherweight champion. He won Olympic gold medals in both 2000 and 2004, and later defected from his home country. Rigondeaux turned pro in 2009, won his first world title at the start of 2012 and then dethroned Nonito Donaire in 2013 to add another sanctioning body belt as well as the Ring Magazine and lineal championships.

Rigondeaux was often derided for a style that emphasized defense more than offense. In order to land a big fight, he went up two weight classes and unsuccessfully challenged fellow two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasiliy Lomachenko at junior lightweight in 2017, calling it a night after the sixth round.

Rigondeaux moved down to bantamweight in 2020 and won a secondary WBA belt – Naoya Inoue was the primary titleholder. But that was followed by back-to-back defeats: a split decision against then-WBO 118lbs titleholder John Riel Casimero in 2021 and a unanimous decision against the 16-3 Vincent Astrolabio in 2022.

Since then, Rigondeaux has won three fights, the most recent coming in November 2024, when he returned from a 17-month layoff and dispatched the 20-2 Dannis Aguero Arias in less than two minutes.

Gamboa, 30-5 (18 KOs), is a 44-year-old former featherweight titleholder. He won gold in the 2004 Olympics, defected from Cuba and ultimately made his pro debut in 2007. Gamboa won a secondary WBA title at 126lbs in 2010 and added the IBF belt later that year with a decision over Orlando Salido.

Gamboa moved up to lightweight in 2013 and suffered his first loss in 2014, getting taken out in the ninth round by Terence Crawford. His next defeat came in 2017, when he was shocked and stopped by the 23-12 Robinson Castellanos.

Gamboa then put together four consecutive victories, including wins over Jason Sosa and Roman Martinez. That run came to an end in a 2019 match with Gervonta Davis for a secondary WBA belt at 135lbs. Gamboa fought through a torn Achilles tendon for most of the one-sided bout before being put away in the 12th round.

He has fought only twice since, with both bouts ending in losses: a near-shutout against Devin Haney in November 2020 and a fifth-round TKO against Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz in 2022. Gamboa also spent a couple months in jail in Cuba at the start of 2023 following a tragic car accident.

Two months ago, it was announced that Gamboa would be taking part in BKB Bare Knuckle Boxing. That apparently will wait until after Gamboa’s next bout under traditional boxing rules.

Who knows. I mean they signed a one-fight deal.

Maybe this young promoter just wants local fans to recognise him and his gym at this stage and gain some following.

I dont think so. Weight difference is pretty big (118 lbs vs 135, Maybe Gamboa will fight at 140, considering inactivity)

GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX, YURIORKIS GAMBOA RETURN IN MIAMI ON MAY 2

Cuban boxers Guillermo Rigondeaux and Yuriorkis Gamboa will look to turn back the clock on May 2 when they co-headline an event billed as “Havana Heat” at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida.

The event is presented by Ron Johnson’s American Dream Presents and Nothing But Sportz and was announced during a press conference on Thursday at the BOXR Gym in Miami.

“Gamboa and Rigondeaux aren’t just accomplished fighters, they represent a boxing tradition that has produced some of the toughest, smartest, and most respected champions in the sport,” Johnson said in a statement. “Cuban boxing carries real history, discipline, and pride. To present both of these men on the same night, in a city like Miami that understands that culture, is something I take seriously. It’s an honor to bring two legends to this stage.”

Rigondeaux, 46, and Gamboa, 44, are both Cuban Olympic gold medalists who enjoyed world title runs in the pro ranks during their heyday.

Rigondeaux (23-3, 16 KOs) is a former Ring, WBA and WBO junior featherweight champion who enjoyed his height in 2013 by scoring a career-best unanimous decision win against a pound-for-pound ranked version Nonito Donaire. Rigondeaux was undefeated through the first 17 fights of his career until he met his match in Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2017, quitting after six frustrating rounds.

Rigondeaux has fought just eight times since then and last graced the ring in November 2024 to score his third straight knockout win.

Gamboa (30-5, 18 KOs), meanwhile, is on a three-fight losing streak against Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney and Isaac Cruz and hasn't won a fight since 2019.

Gamboa enjoyed a solid run as a featherweight champion over 15 years ago but struggled once he stepped up to lightweight, beginning with his first career loss against Terence Crawford in 2014.

Yuriorkis Gamboa, Guillermo Rigondeaux co-headliner moved to Fort Lauderdale

Yuriorkis Gamboa and Guillermo Rigondeaux now have opponents - and a new venue - for their May 30 co-headlining card.

The two leading Cuban boxers of their generation will both fight on a card that was originally scheduled to take place in Miami, but now will be held at the War Memorial Auditorium in nearby Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Gamboa, 30-5 (18 KOs), will face Alexander Espinoza, 20-5-1 (9 KOs), in an eight-round junior welterweight fight, while Rigondeaux, 23-3 (16 KOs), is set to take on Jose Velasquez, 34-13-3 (24 KOs), also in an eight-round bout.

Gamboa, a former unified featherweight champion, hasn’t fought in over four years and is coming in on a three fight losing streak to Isaac Cruz, Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis. His last win was in 2019, when he knocked out Roman Martinez in two rounds. He is now 44 and will be facing an Ecuadorian opponent who is nine years his junior but is also on a losing streak of his own, having lost his last two.

Rigondeaux, 45, has won his last three but hasn’t fought since November of 2024, when he knocked out Dannis Aguero Arias in the first round. Velasquez, 36, is coming off a second round stoppage to Felix Parrilla in March.

Gustavo Trujillo returns alongside Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa

Heavyweight prospect Gustavo Trujillo will share the stage alongside a pair of Cuban legends – Guillermo Rigondeaux and Yuriorkis Gamboa – on May 30 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Trujillo, who stands 6-foot-4, is a 33-year-old from Cuba now fighting out of Miami, Florida. He turned pro in 2022 and is 10-0 (9 KOs), in traditional boxing. Trujillo is currently rated No. 14 by the WBO.

Trujillo has also competed in bare-knuckle boxing, where he is 8-0 (8 KOs); and the Team Boxing League, formerly known as the Team Combat League, where he is 15-9 (1 KO) in the one-round format.

“South Florida has become home to me, and I’m excited to perform in front of the fans who continue supporting my journey,” Trujillo was quoted as saying in a press release. “Every fight is another step toward the top of the heavyweight division.”

Trujillo will face Sergio Ramirez Marin, 22-8 (12 KOs), a 40-year-old from Mexico who has two losses on his record to this show’s promoter, Ronald Johnson.

Trujillo-Marin, as well as Rigondeaux and Gamboa’s respective fights, were originally scheduled for May 2 in Miami. That show was postponed and relocated to this May 30 date in Fort Lauderdale.

Rigondeaux, 45 years old, is 23-3 (16 KOs) and will be fighting for the first time since November 2024. He will face Jose Velasquez, 34-13-3 (24 KOs), a faded former title challenger who lost to Murodjon Akhmadaliev in 2021.

Gamboa, 44 years old, is 30-5 (18 KOs) and returning more than four years after his fifth-round TKO loss to Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz in April 2022. Gamboa will take on Alexander Espinoza, 20-5-1 (9 KOs), who might be faintly familiar to those who recall Espinoza’s 42-second KO loss to Emiliano Vargas last July.
