Chris Billam-Smith: I've got a better resume than Jai Opetaia! | 'I think it's always been an inevitable fight'

Chris Billam-Smith maintains the experience he has now gained makes him better prepared for division elite Jai Opetaia; but Billam-Smith needs to prove his claims against highly dangerous Ryan Rozicki

Chris Billam-Smith is convinced he will return to the top of the cruiserweight division, despite the threat of Ryan Rozicki.

Billam-Smith fights Rozicki at the Bournemouth International Centre on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

For former WBO world champion Billam-Smith, elite cruiserweight Jai Opetaia remains a top target.

"I think it's always been an inevitable fight," Billam-Smith told Sky Sports. "I think it would have happened by now had I beaten 'Zurdo' [Gilberto Ramirez]. I think that would have been the next fight.

"But obviously things happen and I think I'll be better prepared for it now. Having gone through the experience of the loss and I think I'll be a better fighter for it and it [the Opetaia fight] is going to happen at some point."

Opetaia is a celebrated unbeaten champion, but Billam-Smith maintains his own track record of success compares favourably with the Australian's.

"I think if you go name for name, I've got a better resume than him. I don't think you can argue with that," he said of Opetaia.

"A lot of his wins have come by knockout even if he's had a flatter performance and stuff like that. Obviously the [Mairis] Briedis fights he dogged it out, but he's showed a lot. He's showed he'd got knockout power. He's shown he can be hurt and come back and win and I think that's a key thing to have.

"He's got a lot of skills, he's a great fighter and that's exactly why I want to get in the ring with him and see who comes out on top," Billam-Smith continued.

"It's about fighting the best so I can look back on my career and go: I've got no regrets. And I believe when that time comes, I will get the opportunity to fight him and take that opportunity with both hands."

First he has an immediate threat to deal with. Rozicki is a dangerous man with a knockout ratio of over 95 per cent.

"Everyone's got weaknesses. You have to stay concentrated with him because he can switch your lights out at any given time with his punch power. I think he's got power in all his shots as well," Billam-Smith said.

"He gets a lot of power in his left hook, [to] body and head, but also knocks people out with his right and right uppercut. He's got more variety in his power so he's more dangerous in that sense.

"Sometimes he'll put his shots together and they're all going to weighty. They might not be as quick as some people but they're all going to carry power. So you can't stand there and give him a target.

"He holds a lot of power and a lot of variety. I think that's what makes him so dangerous.

"And how tough he is. He's one of those where you hit him and he'll want to hit you three times back."

But if he does get hurt, Billam-Smith has vowed to fight through it. "If your hand's broken, your elbow's sore, your shoulder's out the socket, you've got another arm. That's the way I look at it," he declared.

"Which is maybe the wrong way to look at it but I feel like that's what you have to do as a fighter and as a warrior."

He expects his higher level experience will carry him through. "It depends how you use it. I think for me it is beneficial," Billam-Smith insisted.

"For me the pinnacle of achievement is still ahead of me. So that's really important. I'm still on my way up and that's how I see it. That's really important to focus on."

Cheavon Clarke has eyes on Chris Billam-Smith-Ryan Rozicki winner

Cheavon Clarke knows how important his Saturday fight with Jack Massey is.

They are the co-main on the inaugural Zuffa Boxing UK show in Bournemouth and Clarke, 35 and a former Team GB Olympian, has it all to do.

Now 11-2 with eight stoppage wins, Clarke admits that Massey had never been on his radar.

“I had no reason to think of him,” Clarke said. “He’s obviously done his thing, I’ve done my thing and it’s just the tale of the tape. So you’re gonna fight sometimes, right? And it’s that time and it’s just going out and showing the quality and how I can operate.”

Massey has openly targeted bill-topper Chris Billam-Smith, but is Clarke hoping to land a shot at the winner of the Bournemouth man and Ryan Rozicki?

“Yeah, that would be one of the things you’re looking at,” he said.

“Of course, there’s a big haul of cruiserweights at Zuffa so whether it be the top of the bill or whoever they bring, I’m ready to fight. I’m scared of nobody. I think I’ve shown that in my career span that’s lasted I think, what, four and a half years so far.”

As an older Olympian, Clarke didn’t have time on his side when he turned over and he moved fast. He has taken the losses to Viddal Riley and Leonardo Mosquea but is keen to point out what he has done rather than what he’s not yet achieved.

“It is what it is,” he said when asked his thoughts of his career trajectory. “How I feel don’t really matter. Some things could have been better, maybe be a bit [more] promoted, a bit more pushed, a bit more in that sense. It’s good. I got the British [title] in nine fights. I don’t think a lot of people have done that. I fought for the European after 10 or 11 fights. I’ve achieved a lot in in that sense, though. I didn’t win the European but to get to that level in such a short period of time, I don’t think a lot of people can say they’ve done that and, of course, I’ve had a couple of [losses] but it is what it is. That’s a part of the game and it’s just going back and recalculating and showing that it was a blip.”
During the blip, Clarke got to see that boxing could be a fickle world.

“When it’s all good, everybody’s happy and everybody’s your friend when you’re winning,” he surmised. “When you’ve had a bit of a misfortune or a setback, that’s when you take back a look and you’re like, ‘Oh my god, they were just riding on a hype train. I can’t say that I’ve had that, but just as an overall example, ‘Oh they were just with me because I was winning.’ Flipping hell, I was making so many mistakes but I was getting away with it.”

Clarke contends that the losses have given him more to work with.

He says he didn’t show up against Riley last year.

“But fair play to him, he came fully prepared in all facets and he won but he knows he had a good night, a lucky night, and I think 80-85 per cent of everybody else knows that as well. But that’s what it's about. It’s about what happens on the night.”

When Clarke turned over, the dream would have been titles, a fortune and glory, now he just wants to keep getting better.

“The dream is always to progress and to be better than I was yesterday,” he said. “It sounds cliche, but that’s how it is. I never had a dream of being a boxer. I just picked up boxing to get fit for football and now I’m an Olympian and British champion and I’m fighting here for Zuffa Boxing. Every day in boxing is a bonus for me and I said this when I first started boxing, the day I stop enjoying it, I’ll leave. "There’s nothing holding me here other than the fact that I believe in my ability and I have a purpose.”

Ryan Rozicki rages after weigh-in and accuses Chris Billiam-Smith of 'looking terrible' ahead of Bournemouth showdown

Canada's Ryan Rozicki cuts frustrated figure at Friday's weigh-in, claiming British opponent Chris Billiam-Smith "looked terrible" and some "magic" occurred on the scales ahead of their Bournemouth bout

Ryan Rozicki has accused Chris Billiam-Smith of "looking terrible" at their weigh-in, claiming some "magic" took place on the scales as both fighters came in at exactly the required 200lb cruiserweight limit.

Britain's Billam-Smith fights Canadian Rozicki at the Bournemouth International Centre on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

The bout will see 35-year-old Billam-Smith return to the ring after a 14-month absence to headline Zuffa Boxing 07 - their first numbered event outside the United States - facing hard-hitting Rozicki in a 10-round clash. On Friday, though, Rozicki cut a hugely frustrated tone.

"There was no weight cut," Rozicki told Sky Sports. "I checked my weight at the hotel just before I came over here, I was 196lbs. And then they said on the scale I was 200lbs, and apparently Chris was 201lbs.

"Then they did some magic on the scale, and then he was 200lbs. There's something going on, obviously. It's not the real weight.

"Chris looked terrible. He looked like he had a really hard time cutting weight.

"Like I said, I didn't cut weight. I actually ate last night before bed. I woke up and weighed in."

Ahead of Friday's ceremonial weigh-in, which will be streamed live on the Sky Sports App from 6pm, Rozicki added he and his team may look to protest the events.

However, the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) later officially ruled the weight was correct so a protest will not be possible.

"I've got one job to do tomorrow night. My team will probably protest that, because everybody that was there saw it," Rozicki said.

"For me, it changes nothing. I've fought heavyweight, I've fought cruiserweight, bridgerweight. So for me, it's nothing. That's really his problem.

"I'm switched on."

Clarke: Analogue scales used were fiddly - 'Nothing to see here'

Sky Sports Boxing's Andy Clarke explains the discrepancy on the scales...

"They were using analogue scales and generally speaking, the British Boxing Board of Control will use digital scales, which are a lot simpler.

"Sometimes you have to wait for the readout to settle slightly, but it's a lot simpler. With analogue scales, it's basically like a spirit level that you have to counterbalance and you have to add weights and take weights away and let the whole thing settle.

"It's quite fiddly and if you're not used to doing it, it's quite difficult.

"Basically what happened was they called out a weight of 201lbs before it had completely settled for Chris Billam-Smith. They jumped the gun a bit and then the supervisor came over and said: 'Look, it hasn't settled.'

"They waited for it to settle and then it was 200lbs, and that's the weight that was announced.

"There's nothing to see here as far as the British Boxing Board of Control are concerned. But of course, if you're Rozicki, you latch onto these things and you get a hold of them and you try and rinse them for all that they're worth.

"But it is very entertaining to hear him basically say that essentially the scales were wrong for him and then a few seconds later when nothing had changed, they were correct for Billam-Smith. Because that's fighters, isn't it?

"He used the information to suit himself, but wouldn't accept the other side of it at all. But that's what you have to deal with during fight week."

BOXXER FILES SUIT TO STOP ZUFFA FIGHTS IN BOURNEMOUTH WITH CBS, HICKEY

Zuffa Boxing’s debut across the pond has been met with legal action.

On the eve of the Zuffa Boxing 7 show Saturday in Bournemouth, England, BOXXER has filed a lawsuit claiming Zuffa Boxing poached two of the fighters who’ll be featured, Chris Billam-Smith and Sam Hickey, while they were still under contract with the Ben Shalom-fronted company.

The Daily Mail revealed the development on Friday and reported that BOXXER is pursuing “urgent injunctive relief” through the English courts against Zuffa Boxing and Sky Sports, which is broadcasting the event across the UK and Ireland.

While Zuffa and Sky Sports declined to comment to Daily Mail, the publication obtained a statement from BOXXER.

“BOXXER can confirm it is seeking urgent injunctive relief against Zuffa Boxing and Sky Sports concerning the promotion and proposed participation of fighters who remain subject to binding contractual obligations to BOXXER.

“BOXXER believes that all parties involved are fully aware of the contractual obligations owed to BOXXER by the fighters being promoted for Saturday's event. Despite this, those fighters continue to be advertised and promoted without BOXXER's consent.

“As a result of the conduct it has witnessed in recent months, BOXXER has been left with no option but to seek further relief from the English courts.

“Its application seeks orders to prevent further interference with BOXXER's contractual rights and business relationships and to prevent the use of fighters who remain under binding agreements with BOXXER until those contractual issues are resolved.”

Zuffa Boxing announced the signing of Billam-Smith (21-2, 13 KOs), a former cruiserweight titleholder, on April 13 and set him up to headline against Ryan Rozicki.

Billam-Smith has claimed his contract with BOXXER expired at the end of 2025, while it claims matching rights on any offer within a period.

Zuffa Boxing announced the signing of Hickey (4-0, 1 KO) on May 24, and the Scottish middleweight prospect is set to face Todd Tompkins in a six-rounder.

BOXXER’s decision to pursue legal action shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Shalom voiced his concerns in a recent interview with Seconds Out.

“I think they see me and they think ‘Oh, he’s a nice guy, he’s not going to do anything,’” said Shalom. “You can’t just go in and ignore that fighters are under contract and being paid by another promoter. Look, I know we’re in the world of [Donald] Trump and in the world of this and the world of that, but there’s still some sort of business practice.

“They ignored that we had a matching right on Chris Billam-Smith, completely, not just a matching right but an exclusive negotiation period. They’re ignoring that other fighters on that fight [card] are actually completely under contract. What are you supposed to do? It’s crazy, to be honest. Thankfully we live in a country where you can’t do those types of things.”

BOXXER now stages its shows on BBC after its four-year broadcast deal with Sky Sports expired last year.

In recent months, Sky Sports has instead opted for broadcast deals with Zuffa Boxing and Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.

This guy is the gift that keeps on giving. Out of nowhere has become like the Alex Jones of boxing. Hugely entertaining batshit rants.

I'll actually be sorry when he's gone back to small hall. But that gives us a few more months at least.

If it goes to the cards I expect there to be some payback on the minds of the Brit judges after what happened in Canada to Lerrone Richards.
