“The Trojan” Troy Williamson was left shocked and deflated after Callum Simpson and BOXXER activated their rematch clause, derailing his world title ambitions and costing him a place on this weekend’s Tyson Fury undercard against Simon Zachenhuber.

Troy has no doubt turned his career around after suffering three consecutive losses, which prompted his move up to super middleweight.

The 34-year-old began his resurgence in the 168lb division with a victory over Mark Dickinson for the English title. Then, after defeating Callum Simpson via TKO to claim the British, Commonwealth and European super middleweight titles, Troy was next in line to fight for a world title against Osleys Iglesias.

But after his former foe Simpson activated the rematch clause in their contract, Troy’s world title dreams were halted. As a result, he’s also had to vacate the European belt as the EBU forbid direct rematches, so Williamson-Simpson 2 will move on with the British and Commonwealth titles on the line.

Speaking to Rob Smith from Pure Digital PR, Troy voiced his frustrations with having to rematch someone who he has already beaten convincingly and how he felt his next fight should have been against Iglesias for a world title.

“Not many boxers get the opportunity to fight for a world title. I was next in line, let me go and fight for a world title.

“If Simpson is injured, or whatever, why can’t he make that date? Let me go and fight for a world title, and I’ll give you a defence for the title. I don’t see the harm; they’re obviously blocking me from getting that shot,” Troy accused.

Rematch clauses have become a big talking point in the world of boxing, as they’re increasingly common and are leading to situations like Troy’s that prevent certain fighters from progressing in their careers.

Troy went on to talk about the difficulties a boxer can face when they’re contractually obliged to fight someone who they have already beaten.

“It’s ridiculous, it’s frustrating! I could understand it if it was close, but he’s [Simpson] making a bad decision activating the rematch, because how can you come back off two back-to-back knockouts?” Troy stated.

Simpson is notoriously big for super-middleweight, and Troy believes it is in Simpson’s best interest to forget the rematch and move up in weight. “He’s in a similar situation as I was previously. He needs to move up; he’s too big for a super-middleweight.

“I don’t think that’s the reason why I won, I think I’m just a better fighter, but it played a part, because I know how much it takes out of you when you’re killing yourself to make the weight.

“It’s been five months since the first fight; it’s only going to get harder and harder for him to make the weight, so that’s why it won’t go past six rounds this time,” Troy predicted.

Despite the frustration of having to do the rematch, Troy said he is extra motivated to make a statement. “I need to make a bigger statement than what I did in the first fight, that is why it won’t go past six!”

When asked if the rematch, which has been spoken about to take place next month, is halting his momentum, Williamson said, “I’ll class this as my world title fight, because I know once I get rid of him, I’ll definitely get my world title shot after.”

The rematch between Williamson and Simpson does not yet have an official date, but Troy certainly seems motivated to make a statement and get his shot at a super middleweight world title.

Without a date set for the rematch and apparently nothing on the horizon, Williamson has now missed out on a potential world title shot, vacated his European belt without a chance to defend it, and gave up a bout against a solid contender in Zachenhuber.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9, a press conference will be held in Manchester with both super-middleweight rivals Callum Simpson and Troy Williamson in attendance and available for interviews alongside BOXXER Founder Ben Shalom with major announcements to be revealed.

34-year-old Williamson began his resurgence in the 168lbs division with a victory over Mark Dickinson for the English title. Then, three months later in December, he defeated Callum Simpson via TKO 10 to claim the British, Commonwealth and European super-middleweight titles.

Troy was next in line to fight for a world title against IBF and IBO champ Osleys Iglesias.

But after his former foe Simpson activated the rematch clause in their contract, his world title dreams were put on hold. As a result, he’s also had to vacate the European belt as the EBU do not honour rematches, so Williamson-Simpson 2 will move on with just the British and Commonwealth titles on the line.

However, that date has been pushed back constantly so that Darlington’s Williamson hasn’t fought at all this year.

Troy Williamson will face Callum Simpson in a must-win matchup for both on August 8, as Ben Shalom's BOXXER promotion heads to DAZN later this summer.

Again housed at Leeds' First Direct Arena, it will be back to the scene of a career-best triumph for Darlington's Williamson (22-4-1, 16 KOs), who trailed across all three scorecards before conjuring up a tenth-round knockout win of fan favorite Simpson.

He scooped the British, Commonwealth and European 168-pound titles with that stunning victory, though had to relinquish the latter as Team Simpson invoked their immediate rematch clause meaning he missed out on lucrative opportunities while waiting.

Among them was an IBF world title shot against now-champion Osleys Iglesias (15-0, 14 KOs) and a spot on the Tyson Fury-Arslanbek Makhmudov undercard, both in April.

The 33-year-old sounds glad to finally be fighting once more, after an original May date was pushed back.

"It's about time they got themselves ready and believe me, they have made a big mistake by activating the rematch. This fight cannot come soon enough. Callum Simpson: I've beaten you once, and on August 8, I will beat you again," he insisted in a press release Tuesday.

Simpson (18-1, 13 KOs) has revamped his team before the jeopardy intensifies again.

The Barnsley puncher parted ways with his longtime training setup in west Yorkshire and has begun working under highly-rated coach Rob McCracken in Sheffield. Having heard plenty of questions surrounding his future, including a move up to light heavyweight, he believes revenge will be sweet heading into his 20th professional contest.

"Troy had his night, but I'm coming to take back what's mine. I'm fitter, sharper and more determined than ever. He's done a lot of talking since the first fight, but now he's got to back it up. I'm ready to settle the score and remind people who Callum Simpson is," the 29-year-old said.

The pair will meet at an inaugural press conference from 11am ET/4pm BST on Tuesday afternoon in Manchester, live on DAZN socials and YouTube.

After five cards being shown across the free-to-air BBC platform, including iPlayer and BBC Two, the company will begin its second broadcasting deal in quick succession following the expiration of their four-year Sky contract.

This partnership will not impact BOXXER's existing shows on the BBC, with promotional founder and CEO Ben Shalom naturally excited about the news.

"We're delighted to be partnering with DAZN, the global home of boxing, to showcase this event to a worldwide audience. Leeds will provide an incredible atmosphere on August 8, and we're excited to build on this momentum with more major events on DAZN, including a huge BOXXER PPV event later this year," he said in the same release.

The Troy Williamson-Callum Smith rematch, set for the First Direct Bank Arena in Leeds, England, on August 8 will be shown live and exclusively on DAZN after promoters Boxxer announced a deal with the streaming network.

Boxxer, headed by Ben Shalom, have worked with the BBC since their contract with Sky Sports expired 12 months ago. Boxing Scene understands that Boxxer will continue to work with the BBC but the finer details of their coverage, after announcing on social media "a new multi-fight partnership" with DAZN, will be revealed at a press conference on Wednesday.

Simpson, 18-1 (13 KOs), had been one of Boxxer's hottest commodities until he lost, in an upset, to Williamson in December. With the victory, which came via TKO in the 10th round, Williamson reinvigorated his own career and claimed the European, Commonwealth and British super middleweight titles.
