Yordenis Ugas to return June 6 in Mexico after 3-year hiatus

Former welterweight titleholder Yordenis Ugas has finally emerged after a three-year break.

Ugas (27-6, 12 KOs) is scheduled to return June 6 to make his 154-pound debut in an eight-round bout against Jesus Lopez (16-17-3, 4 KOs) to headline a Bxstrs Promotions show in Hermosillo, Mexico, it was announced Thursday.

The 39-year-old Ugas hasn't fought since suffering a unanimous decision defeat against Mario Barrios in September 2023 for the WBC interim 147-pound title.

Ugas was dropped twice and battled through swollen eyes in the Barrios bout. The setback followed Ugas' loss to Errol Spence Jr. in a title unification bout in April 2022, in which Ugas suffered a 10th-round TKO and a fractured right orbital.

Ugas came into the Spence clash off a career-best unanimous decision win against Manny Pacquiao in August 2021. The win capped off a four-fight winning streak for the former WBA 147-pound titleholder Ugas, who’d beaten Abel Ramos, Mike Dallas Jr., and Omar Figueroa Jr. following his highly disputed split decision loss in a title challenge against Shawn Porter in 2019.

Ugas is now looking to regain his world-level form in arguably boxing’s deepest division. If he has any problems against the uneven Lopez, it could be time for the Cuban to call it quits.

Lopez, a 25-year-old from Sinaloa, Mexico, has lost his last three bouts after an 11-fight unbeaten streak before that. Lopez kicked off his career with a record of 3-9-2.
