What if Thomas Hearns was on the 1976 U.S. Olympic Boxing team?

Post by scorpio83 »

We know that the 1976 U.S. Olympic Boxing team were celebrated with Sugar Ray Leonard, the Spinks brothers and Leo Randolph, who each won Gold and there was also a Silver Medalist in Charles Mooney and a Bronze Medalist in "Big" John Tate. Finally, Howard Davis Jr. won the Gold Medal at lightweight and eventually awarded the Val Barker Trophy as he defeated other future legends in Thomas Hearns in the National AAU title and defeated another future legend in Aaron Pryor in to qualified prior to winning the Gold Medal.

My question was that what if Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns beat Howard Davis Jr. for the AAU title and Aaron "The Hawk" Pryor to qualify to fight on the 1976 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team instead, would the Hitman dominate the lightweight division in the Olympic games and won the Val Barker Trophy? Imo, if replaced Davis with Hearns, the 1976 U.S. Olympic Boxing team would be more celebrated and had the edge over the 1984 U.S. Olympic Boxing team that was led by Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker, Tyrell Biggs, Henry Tillman, Frank Tate, Mark Breland, Meldrick Taylor, Jerry Page, Steve McCrory and Paul Gonzales, whom they each won gold medals than their 1976 counterpart while other legends like Virgil "Quicksilver" Hill and Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield won silver and bronze medal respectively.

What do you guys think about the scenario of Hearns being on the 1976 U.S. Olympic Boxing team?

Maybe had Reinaldo Valiente who represented Cuba in the lightweight division had not lost to Yugoslavia's Ace Rusevski in the third round, 2 rounds before the medal round and the Soviet Union's Vassily Solomin had not lost to Romania's Simion Cutov in the medal round or the semifinals where Solomin ended up winning the bronze medal. Howard Davis Jr. beat Valiente's and Solomin's conquerors in the semifinals and finals to win the Gold Medal.

In this scenario, same result, but with Hearns representing the 1976 U.S. boxing team, he would show up like he rise up in the pro ranks that started at welterweight and devastate Rusevski and Cutov respectively with long left jabs and right hands that they both never felt before, then the Hitman taking home the gold medal imo. Had he faced Valiente and Solomin, we would never know what would happen had both of them advance from those rounds.

I don't think Thomas Hearns had even developed his knock-out punch yet when he was still an amateur.
He would have had to have relied purely on his boxing skills in 1976.

In that case scenario, Hearns would just outbox them behind his long left jabs and landing one-two combos to take a decision.

Here's the thing, Scorp. He wasn't developed to the point like he was as a professional. He might have gotten a bronze. Might. I would love to see the 2 fights he had with Bobby Joe Young where some said he lost.
