Young people complaining they don't own a property
Young people complaining they don't own a property
I hardly knew anybody who owned a property during their 20's and 30's.
What's so different between now and then ?

Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
Twenty to thirty years ago a lot (if not most) young people in the UK were buying their first homes in their late 20s or early thirties. It was the norm. This generation of young people look at that and see they're not able to do the same as their parents.

We rented from the council or went on a council estate, three of them.

Going back to the 1950s and '60s, most working-class people lived in rented social housing. By the 1980s, the majority of young people were buying, overwhelmingly so by the turn of the millenium.

Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
It’s definitely harder than it was c.30 years ago, but equally seems lots of the same young people who complain about it don’t do that much to help themselves. When my missus & I were saving to buy our first house, I was in a cheap houseshare renting a single bedroom, and she lived there with me, basically saving all of her wages towards a deposit. Was obviously pretty cramped and unpleasant, but we had a full deposit built up within a year.
From what I read online, lots of young people are renting themselves nice flats / houses and then complaining they don’t have enough spare money to save for their own place. Surely they must realise you need to make some sacrifices in order to do so, whether that’s financial or general comfort?

My dad bought his first house when he was 22yrs old and was working as a cobbler. My mum was 18, did not work and they were married.
This would have been around 1970-71, before I was born.
A lot has changed.

just compare prices today to those in past generations. even accounting for inflation properties and rents are far more expensive now. my dad was able to buy a house back in his day with just 2 years of salary saved up. today it would take him his whole career

Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
I know 3 graduates from about 25 years ago, they left uni, got graduate jobs paying around £25k and bought similar homes that cost probably £60k, those same jobs now pay £35k but those same houses now cost £250k. Young people will ony ever own property via inheritance for the most part.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑11 Jun 2026, 15:57 just compare prices today to those in past generations. even accounting for inflation properties and rents are far more expensive now. my dad was able to buy a house back in his day with just 2 years of salary saved up. today it would take him his whole career

I'm buying the cheapest 2 bed house in my area
£268,000.
So you need at least 10% deposit, then £1400 a month mortgage plus £250 council tax and whatever utilities cost.
Even if you can afford the monthly mortgage cost, how are you saving £30k when you're renting?

Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
My middle child Bought her first house with her husband at 20 (he was 28) that was 7 years ago.
My oldest child bought a house at 26 with her husband (he was 27) that was 2 years ago
My youngest bought his first house at 24 this year.
Several of their friends are the same way. Buying property young may not be easy but it is a choice of priorities. Land and homes are not getting cheaper and if they are not going to buy young I doubt they will afford homes when they are 40.

When I got out of college.
One of the first things I was told was
“Get on the properly ladder” as quick as you can.

I know there is some merit to renting but nothing beats having something that belongs to you. I currently have just over $100K to pay off my home. Was the greatest thing I did buying my home 14 years ago. My current mortgage is less than the majority of one room renters in my city.

Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
Like most jobs today unfortunately
Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
In the 70s & 80s the population was flat and we had enough housing for everyone. Mass immigration has added another 10 million to the population but the housing supply is not much changed.

Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
Immigration is great for property owners.
also now the major landlords come from Arab and Russian nations
Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
Immigration is great for employers too, competition for jobs, ie low demand for workers, keeps wages low. Just like high demand for housing keeps housing costs high.
Re: Young people complaining they don't own a property
That is exactly why immigration is happening. Greedy employers don't care about their nation or Western Civilization for that matter. The irony, of course, is these immigrants are conservatives by Western standards. they hate our values.
