Change of Plan for Lewis Crocker – IBF Order Mandatory Defence Against Liam Paro

The IBF have ordered Lewis Crocker to defend his world title against Liam Paro next and formally denied a request to make a voluntary defence.

The sanctioning body issued a letter on Thursday rejecting a proposal that would have allowed Crocker to defend his newly won IBF 147lb title against former foe Conah Walker.

Rather than granting flexibility for an optional bout, the IBF has moved to enforce mandatory obligations.

As a result, Crocker has now been instructed to enter negotiations for a compulsory defence against Australian contender Paro, with the clock expected to begin on talks imminently.

The IBF had previously ordered Brian Peters-managed Paro to trade leather with Paddy Donovan in a final eliminator. The pair were meant to meet down under on January 16 for the right to challenge for the red belt.

With mandatory status still up for grabs at that time, Matchroom and Team Crocker began making voluntary defence plans. A number of names were in the frame but Walker, who ‘The Croc’ previously shared the ring with, won the race and was set to challenge for the strap sometime this spring.

However, it appears that the Andy Lee trained Limerick man’s withdrawal from the Paro bout, through illness, from the eliminator has had a domino effect that inspired a massive change of plans.

Paro will now go straight into a world title fight and unless he agrees to step aside terms, he will be Crocker’s first defence.

Paro represents a significant challenge. The Queensland boxer is a former world champion at light welterweight and is a talented operator. Although there will be some who will argue he is not any more of a threat that Walker, and as such the news wont’ upset the big punching and laid back Belfast man.

Dublin’s Darragh Foley had made himself to fight Paro in Brisbane on January 16, but with another world title fight firmly in his sights the Aussie may elect against taking an risks.

IBF set to order mandatory for Lewis Crocker; Conah Walker rematch denied

Lewis Crocker was keen on the idea of a unification bout with Devin Haney.

Matchroom Boxing was more interested in Crocker, an unbeaten native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, entering a rematch with Conah Walker.

Neither of those fights will be next for the IBF welterweight titlist.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the IBF is set to order Crocker, 22-0 (11 KOs), to next face mandatory challenger Liam Paro. A ruling made on Thursday denied an exception request filed by Matchroom Boxing seeking to stage a Crocker-Walker rematch this spring as a voluntary defense, in lieu of his upcoming mandatory.

“On January 2, 2026, IBF received a letter from [Matchroom] on behalf of Champion Lewis Crocker to participate in an optional defense … on April 18 or April 25 in Belfast,” IBF Daryl Peoples stated in a ruling obtained by Boxing Scene. “The proposed April dates are thirty-six (36) and forty-three (43) days, respectively, past the champion’s March 13 mandatory due date.

“On January 7, 2026, the IBF received a letter from [No Limit Boxing’s] Matt Rose on behalf of Liam Paro opposing the granting of the exception. [Also on] January 7, the IBF Directors participated in a video conference to determine whether Mr. Crocker’s exception request should be granted or denied. … [T]he majority of the directors determined that Lewis Crocker’s exception should be denied.”

Fight Freaks Unite’s Dan Rafael was the first to report the development.

Crocker won the vacant title in a September 13 rematch win over Limerick’s Paddy Donovan. The bout came six months after their controversial first meeting, when Donovan was disqualified for landing a knockout punch just after the bell to end the eighth round.

Donovan, 14-2 (12 KOs), fought on relatively even terms with Crocker in their second act, only for a pair of suffered knockdowns to prove the difference on the cards. The 26-year-old southpaw Donovan was down in the third and fifth rounds, which left him just short in the eyes of two of the three judges in a September 13 split decision defeat in Belfast.

Prior to their two-fight set, Crocker edged Wolverhampton, England’s Walker, 17-3-1 (8 KOs), via 10-round unanimous decision in their June 2024 meeting in Birmingham, England.

Ironically, Crocker has Donovan to thank for being stuck in his current predicament.

Donovan was previously ordered by the IBF to next face Paro in a title eliminator to determine the next mandatory challenger for Crocker. The two were due to meet on the January 16 Nikita Tszyu-Michael Zerafa card in Brisbane, Australia.

As previously reported by BS, Donovan withdrew from the fight on New Year’s Eve after contracting the flu, which shut down his training camp for three weeks.

Given the timing, the IBF moved forward with naming Paro, 27-1 (16 KOs), the next mandatory in lieu of ordering another elimination contest. Paro was already the No. 2 contender after a 12-round win over unbeaten David Papot last September 18 in Tennyson, Australia. The win was his second in a row after he suffered his lone career defeat, a December 2024 points loss to Richardson Hitchins, which ended his IBF 140lbs title reign.

Strangely, both Crocker and Haney both expressed interest in a two-belt welterweight unification clash. Haney, 33-0 (15 KOs), claimed the WBO 147lbs strap in a 12-round unanimous decision win over Brian Norman Jnr last November 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Crocker recently told Ring Magazine that a Haney fight was of interest, given that “I’m willing to fight the biggest names. I’m not scared.”

Haney was equally on board, though more cognizant of the politics that would prevent such a fight. The unbeaten Oakland-born, Las Vegas-based three-division titlist Haney was previously signed to Matchroom Boxing but has since noted the several verbal shots that promoter Eddie Hearn has taken at him through the media.

“I like this guy,” Haney said of Crocker’s willingness to take on all comers. “Eddie doesn’t want this for you, mate.”

The unfortunate part is that Crocker and Matchroom would have had a better shot at being granted an exception had they pushed for the unification clash with Haney rather than a random voluntary defense. Sanctioning bodies tend to favor such bouts in these situations.

Instead, Crocker can now expect a notice of next steps from the IBF, come January 13.

“The IBF will order Lewis Crocker to begin negotiations with Liam Paro for a Mandatory defense of the IBF welterweight title,” noted Peoples. “Approximately sixty (60) days prior to the mandatory due date, pursuant to Rule 5.C.”

This is a massive win for paro. But I fear a unification will be granted. And likely taken.

If I am Crocker I am unifying with Haney for life changing money rather than a defence I could definatly lose vs parro…

Hope ibf do there big tough guy tho no and bulldoze this through.

Just when they were gonna announce a date and venue.

At least tickets weren’t sold yet.

I mean, I think the fight will still take place.

Lewis Crocker suffers hand injury, Liam Paro title defense postponed

Liam Paro must endure another roadblock in his quest to become a two-division world champion.

Local news outlets in Australia overnight have reported IBF welterweight champion Lewis Crocker has sustained hand ligament damage during a recent training session, seeing their title fight postponed at least a month.

While Paro's team are furious with another untimely development impacting their man, Matchroom have already provided No Limit reps a medical certificate the injury is genuine before their mandatory title defense overseas.

"I won my world title in Belfast, had my moment so will travel anywhere. But going to Australia and beating the ex-champion in his home country will be special," Crocker told talkSPORT recently when previewing their matchup.

Now though, the new date will likely be sometime in May or June, depending on how quickly the Belfast beltholder can return to training under new head coach Huzaifah Iqbal.

Crocker (22-0, 11 KOs) won a then-vacant strap during his Paddy Donovan rematch in September, with the latter expected to face former IBF 140-pound champion Paro on January 16 for a chance at an unlikely trilogy against his compatriot.

Team Donovan opted to withdraw their man from the title eliminator after the 27-year-old fell ill over the festive period and hadn't trained, while Paro (27-1, 16 KOs) has kept himself busy and in training camp since October.

April 5 was the tentative date for their matchup, either in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, as part of a No Limit card topped by former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu.

Instead, the wait continues for the Mackay southpaw, who outpointed David Papot in a grueling 12-round duel to announce himself at welterweight five days after Crocker's repeat victory.

Lewis Crocker hand injury likely to delay title defense vs. Liam Paro

Liam Paro could have to wait a few more weeks in his bid to become a two-division titlist.

Boxing Scene has learned that Belfast’s Lewis Crocker has reportedly suffered ligament damage in his hand, which will postpone his planned IBF welterweight title defense versus Australia’s Paro. Neither an official date and venue were set but was rumored to land on April 5, either in Brisbane or the Gold Coast.

It has been suggested that the fight could now suffer a delay by as much as four weeks, depending on how long it takes for Crocker, 22-0 (11 KOs) to heal and resume camp.

Messages left for Matchroom Boxing (Crocker) and No Limit Boxing (Paro) were not immediately returned as this goes to publication. However, Boxing Scene has learned that Matchroom has provided No Limit representatives with a medical certificate, which will likely be required by the IBF as well as the bout is a mandatory title defense.

Paro’s team was reportedly furious over the development to the point of suggesting that Crocker faked the injury to buy more time.

No Limit earned promotional rights after it edged out Matchroom by just $27,000 during a February 3 purse bid hearing.

The development mean that Crocker would have to hit the road for the first defense of the title he won in a September 13 decision victory over Limerick’s Paddy Donovan in his Belfast backyard. Crocker scored two knockdowns in their bitter rematch, which proved the difference on the scorecards, as he claimed a majority decision and the vacant IBF 147lbs title.

The second act took place six months after Crocker was awarded an 8th round disqualification win in their IBF title eliminator last March 1, also in Belfast.

Paro, 27-1 (16 KOs) was declared as the de facto mandatory challenger after his own planned clash with Donovan fell through late into the promotion. The two were due to meet on January 16 in Brisbane, only for Donovan to fall ill late in training camp and was pulled from the IBF final elimination contest.

Paro was already the No. 2 contender after a 12-round win over unbeaten David Papot last September 18 in Tennyson, Australia. It was his second consecutive victory, both which followed a December 2024 points loss to Richardson Hitchins to end his IBF 140lbs title reign after just six months.

The length of the delay could cause issues with the IBF, who ruled that the bout must take place no later than 90 days out from the February 3 purse bid. Even with a medical extension, Crocker is locked into this fight if he wants to keep his title.

Matchroom already attempted to sidestep the mandatory obligation, with plans to have Crocker meet Conah Walker in a rematch. The requested voluntary defense was rejected by the IBF, on the grounds of the proposed dates (April 18 and April 25) falling outside the period when Crocker was due to face the sanctioning body’s top-rated contender.

Once the bout is rescheduled, Crocker is entitled to 65 per cent ($748,800) of the abovementioned winning bid as the defending titleholder. The remaining 35 per cent ($403,200) would go to Paro as the mandatory challenger. However, his end is more subject to the contractually agreed upon compensation per his promotional contract with No Limit – a common practice by promoters, who normally bid enough to satisfy the demands of the opposing party.

CROCKER-PARO IBF WELTERWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT SET FOR JUNE 24 IN BRISBANE

Three months later than originally planned, Lewis Crocker-Liam Paro is all systems go for June 24.

Original plans were for a late March or early April date, before Lewis Crocker (22-0, 11 KOs) sustained hand ligament damage in training requiring rehab and a period of rest.

Now fully rested, recovered and back in the swing of training properly once more, the Belfast puncher has just over six weeks until fight night at Brisbane's Pat Rafter Arena for his first IBF welterweight title defense under new trainer Huzaifah Iqbal.

That it'll be his first trip abroad adds to the intrigue, given the 29-year-old remains relatively green at world level besides his two-fight Paddy Donovan series and Conah Walker, a narrow 10-round points win in June 2024 that has already aged nicely two years on.

Walker (18-3-1, 9 KOs) has been steadfast in his pursuit of a rematch for world honors, while Donovan (14-2, 11 KOs) faces Karen Chukhadzhian (26-3, 14 KOs) later this week hoping to snare another title shot should he win their IBF final eliminator in Germany.

WBO beltholder Devin Haney, former 135-pound champion Keyshawn Davis and other stateside names have all voiced their interest in facing Crocker abroad, so the importance of this fight cannot be understated.

"It's great to be back and defending my world title for the first time. I'm looking forward to going to Australia, making a huge statement Down Under, beating a former world champion in his own backyard. It will be another step in putting my name in the history books," Crocker said after the fight announcement was made official.

The same goes for Liam Paro, mind. Australian boxing is enjoying a promising period at present, complete with Matchroom's increased involvement in the space while No Limit lead the way and Tasman Fighters boast a steady stream of prospects across several weight divisions.

No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose is excited given the stakes involved after winning the purse bid.

"This isn't smoke and mirrors, isn't a manufactured fight. These are two legitimate world level fighters risking everything. We won the purse bid because we believed this fight belonged in Australia and now Brisbane gets a world title event that will absolutely deliver," he stressed in a press release shared Tuesday.

Paro (27-1, 16 KOs), a former IBF junior welterweight champion, spoke effusively about what it meant to secure a world title shot on home soil, after upsetting then-beltholder Subriel Matias within his native Puerto Rico with a decision victory in June 2024.

Even though he would lose it six months later against Richardson Hitchins, the Mackay southpaw — who resides in Brisbane — retained drawing power and looks rejuvenated at welterweight after almost a decade campaigning in the 140-pound division. He'll return to the scene of his hard-fought points win over David Papot last September.

"I'm ready to make Australian boxing history, it's the kind of moment you dream about as a kid," Paro said in a press release.

"To fight for another world title at home in Australia is massive, but there's no easy road here. Crocker is undefeated and champion for a reason, coming in full of confidence, but I've built my career the hard way.

"I've traveled the world, fought in hostile environments and already beaten one of boxing's most dangerous champions. I truly believe I'm levels above anyone he has faced and can't wait to make history on June 24 in Brisbane."

Liam Paro says fight with Lewis Crocker in Brisbane is what dreams are made of

Liam Paro said a fight at home against Lewis Crocker for the IBF welterweight title is a dream come true.

The Irishman became champion with a decision victory over Paddy Donovan in Belfast last year and he has to go on the road for his first defense, taking on Paro at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane on June 24.

No Limit Boxing will promote the event.

“I’m ready to make Australian boxing history,” Paro said

“It’s the kind of moment you dream about as a kid. To fight for another world title at home in Australia is massive, but there’s no easy road here. Crocker is undefeated and champion for a reason and he’s coming in full of confidence. But I’ve built my career the hard way. I’ve travelled the world, fought in hostile environments and already beaten one of the most dangerous champions in boxing. I truly believe I’m levels above anyone he has faced and I can’t wait to make history on June 24 in Brisbane.”

The bout had been due to take place earlier this year but an injury to the champion forced the fight’s delay and paused Paro’s bid to become a two-division world champion.

Paro is 30 and comes from Queensland. He’s 27-1 (16 KOs), won his first world title against Subriel Matias but lost the belt to New Yorker Richardson Hitchins.

Crocker, 29, has a 22-0 (11 KOs) and twice defeated Donovan last year, dropping Paddy twice in the rematch and winning a decision.

Crocker was well behind on the scorecards in the first fight only for Donovan to be disqualified with a shot after the bell, having already had points deducted.

No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose said: “This is a proper world title fight between two guys right in the middle of their prime and both believe they’re about to take over the division,” Rose said. “You’ve got Liam Paro, who has already gone overseas and done what most fighters only talk about doing. He went into Puerto Rico against one of the most avoided fighters in world boxing and ripped the belt away from him.

“Then on the other side you’ve got Lewis Crocker, undefeated, world champion, massive support behind him in Ireland and coming here with absolutely zero fear about fighting Liam in Australia. This isn’t smoke and mirrors. This isn’t a manufactured fight. These are two legitimate world level fighters risking everything. We won the purse bid because we believed this fight belonged in Australia and now Brisbane gets a world title event that will absolutely deliver.”

Lewis Crocker sends warning to Liam Paro and the rest of the 147 division

Lewis Crocker will travel to Australia next week with the aim of returning with the IBF welterweight title around his waist.

The Irishman faces a tough challenge in Liam Paro at Pat Rafter Area on June 24.

Paro will have the crowd on his side, and the champion has admitted he is facing “the toughest test" of his career in Brisbane.

“I just feel great at the minute,” Crocker said. “I feel like I’m the bigger puncher. Obviously, he’ll go in with more experience in his mind as well and he’ll be thinking he’s been in better opposition as well. But I don’t believe that he’s been in with a fighter like myself.”

Paro will be hoping to emulate the biggest night of his career, when he travelled to Puerto Rico to dethrone Subriel Matias when challenging for the IBF 140lbs title as a significant underdog.

This time it is Crocker who is on the road.

"Look, I just believe I have all the skills to beat Paro,” said the Irishman. “He’s a great fighter, but I just believe now as the champion and stuff and the way things are going, that I’m just gonna get the win. I remember back when he fought Matias, I’d seen the build-up of the fight and I remember he was a big underdog and I was rooting for him. I was hoping he was getting the win, just to get the upset, and I remember waking up and seeing the result and there was like, fair play to him. Obviously I’ve seen him fight several times since then. He’s a great fighter and I’m expecting the toughest test of my career.”

Crocker claimed the title last September, dropping Paddy Donovan twice on his way to a decision victory in Belfast to improve to 22-0 (11 KOs). He then split from trainer Billy Nelson to train with Huzaifah Iqbal in the south of England.

“I know if I catch anyone in the 147 division, I believe I can get them out of there. I know if I catch anyone with the right shot that I can get them out of there,” Crocker, 29, added.

“You know, you’ll have to get me to the closest graveyard to get me out of there.

“It’s the biggest moment of my career going into this because that’d open many more doors for me as well. So I’m gonna be very, very, very tough to beat on the night.”

Paro is 30-years-old and the only blemish on his 27-1 (16 KOs) record is to Richardson Hitchins in 2024 in the fight after Matias. He has won two bouts since, defeating Jonathan Navarro in five and David Papot on points last September.

Lewis Crocker embraces underdog role in Australia against Liam Paro

Irishman Lewis Crocker has welcomed the first defense of his IBF welterweight title taking place in Australia.

Crocker won the belt with a decision over countryman Paddy Donovan in Belfast last September, but promoter Matchroom lost the purse bids for the bout with Australian Liam Paro.

Crocker is now in Australia, completing preparations for the fight at Pat Rafter Stadium in Queensland on June 24.

Crocker is 22-0 (11 KOs), while southpaw Paro is 27-1 (16 KOs).

“It’s been great,” Crocker said of his first week in Australia. “I know [Australia-based Irishman] Conor Wallace from Ireland, since the national team and stuff, and he was able to set us up with a lot of things and help us out and stuff. So with the boys out of Fortitude, who’ve helped out with the gym, etc., everything’s been great and I’m looking forward to the fight. And first time in Australia… it’s a lovely city.”

Paro was asked whether he was surprised to be heading Down Under for his maiden defense.

“It was a voluntary that was going in and stuff, so I would have thought it was going to be Belfast, but then when Paro became mandatory, I knew there was a chance that it was going to be Australia, but it is what it is,” Crocker added. “And Australia, as a kid, you would think it’s a dream and stuff like this, being a world champion and fighting abroad, fighting in Australia and stuff. It’s great.”

And while Crocker is on the road, he knows not every night will be like it was at Windsor Park last year, when he raised the championship aloft having defeated Donovan for a second time.

“I made more money out of it at the end of the day, you know. Australia paid the most money, so as a prizefighter, how could I be upset at that as well,” he said of having to pack his bags.

“My last fight was in my hometown stadium, a fight that [promoter] Eddie [Hearn] got me where I won the world title. So for me, winning the world title will never be as good anywhere else as it was that last time, so I’m happy to fight abroad and it builds the legacy. Plus, you know, Paro is the odds-on favourite here. Everyone’s coming to see him and stuff.

“I went through that last time, so it takes a bit of ease off my mind as well. I’m prepared.”
