OSCAR COLLAZO VS. JOEY CANOY HEADLINES JUNE 20 SHOW

Ring and unified strawweight champion Oscar Collazo will defend his trio of world titles against Joey Canoy on June 20.

The two will headline a Golden Boy Promotions show, live and exclusively on DAZN from Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California.

Collazo, rated No. 9 on The Ring's pound-for-pound list, is only too happy to remain active against the battle-hardened Filipino.

"Canoy is a very good fighter, he's highly ranked and got the pedigree," Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) told The Ring.

"I'm just happy to be back in the ring, stay active and we're looking for the big fights. I'm very grateful, I want to highlight the lower weight classes and being the headliner in California is a big opportunity for me."

The 29-year-old will be making the eighth defense of his WBO crown he won with a seventh-round stoppage of former champion Melvin Jerusalem in May 2023, while defense four of the Ring and WBA championships claimed by stopping Thammanoon Niyomtrong (TKO7) in November 2024. Meanwhile, Canoy (25-5-2, 15 KOs) has been a professional since 2012 but not boxed for a world title until now.

The Ring's No. 5-rated contender for Collazo's crown, the 32-year-old southpaw similarly holds a win over Jerusalem (UD10) and is riding a 10-fight unbeaten streak dating back to May 2021.

In the evening's chief support bout, Ricardo Sandoval will make a belated first defense of his WBA and WBC flyweight titles against Mexico's unbeaten contender Yoali Mosqueda.

Sandoval was slated to face Olympic champion Galal Yafai in Sheffield, England on June 6 before the Brit withdrew through injury earlier this month.

The 27-year-old (27-2, 18 KOs) will end an 11-month layoff, having stunned Kenshiro Teraji with a 12-round split decision win to unify the titles in Yokohama last July.

Mosqueda (15-0, 12 KOs) has been a professional for five years and enters his career-best opportunity after pitching an impressive six-fight winning streak, including last time out with a ninth-round stoppage of Miguel Nieblas on February 14.

This marks the Mexican's second appearance outside his native homeland, having boxed to a first-round finish of Eldin Guinahon at Japan's famed Korakuen Hall in Tokyo two summers ago.

Press Release

WBA / WBO minimumweight champion Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) of Villalba, Puerto Rico, will return to Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, Calif., to defend his unified titles against General Santos City, Philippines native Joey Canoy (25-5-2, 15 KOs). The twelve-round championship bout will stream live worldwide on DAZN on Saturday, June 20th, presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Miguel Cotto Promotions. Collazo was last seen delivering a title defense against Mexico’s Jesus “Chiquito” Haro, forcing a stoppage at the conclusion of the sixth round after Haro’s corner advised the referee to halt the contest. With his relentless pressure, elite skill set, and growing résumé of championship victories, Collazo continues to grow his status among the sport’s pound-for-pound elite.

“I’m so excited to be back in the ring this June 20th against a great and proven opponent like Joey Canoy,” said Oscar Collazo. “Fights like these are what keep my career going and motivate me to give my all in every training camp and every fight night. I’m always grateful to Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions for keeping me active and for working to get me the best fights for my career. We remain focused, hungry, and ready for another great challenge.”

“I have been dreaming about this all my life,” said Canoy. “Thank you to my team Sanman boxing and Miguel Cotto promotions for giving me a chance to fight for my dream. I am training hard and I have a month to go. I will do everything to get an upset.”

“Oscar Collazo should be at the top of everyone’s pound-for-pound list, and on June 20th, he’s going to remind the world exactly why,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya. “He has already beaten many of the best fighters in the division, and instead of taking the easy road, he continues to seek out the toughest challenges available and is stepping into the ring against a top contender in Joey Canoy because that’s what true champions do. Oscar never shies away from greatness; he runs toward it. From top to bottom, this card is loaded with some of Golden Boy’s most exciting prospects and proven contenders, guaranteeing an action-packed night of world-class boxing that Southern California fight fans will not want to miss.”

“Collazo is among the elite of boxing as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world,” said Chairman of Miguel Cotto Promotions, Miguel Cotto. “On Saturday, June 20, he will test his skill once again against Joey Canoy. It will be a true fireworks display in a clash of styles that fans cannot afford to miss.”

WBO to vote on replacing sidelined minimumweight contender Joey Canoy with Luis Castillo

The WBO announced Tuesday it will convene a special meeting Wednesday to rule on a request to replace sidelined minimumweight title challenger Joey Canoy with Luis “Flechita” Castillo.

Canoy 25-5-2 (15 KOs), from the Philippines, is out of Saturday’s title fight in Oceanside, California, due to “the unfortunate inability … to secure the necessary work visa to compete,” WBO President Gustavo Olivieri posted on “X.”

Unified champion Oscar Collazo 14-0 (11 KOs) was due to defend his belt against Canoy, who’s the WBO No. 5-ranked 105lbs contender. In order to fight for the WBO belt, a contender must be ranked within the sanctioning body’s top 15.

So Collazo co-promoter Miguel Cotto has submitted a written request to the WBO’s Ratings and Championship Committee to provide sanction approval and allow Mexico’s Sampson Lewkowicz-promoted Castillo 22-1-1 (14 KOs) to fight for the title at Frontwave Arena.

The Golden Boy Promotions card, to be streamed by DAZN, is loaded with prospects from Oscar De La Hoya’s company.

Unified champ Oscar Collazo set for last minute replacement as opponent unable to enter the US in time

This weekend, Joey Canoy was set to challenge Oscar Collazo, but the challenger is currently unable to enter the United States.

Puerto Rico’s Collazo has established himself as the man to beat in the minimumweight division, with regular activity and lofty ambitions making him a must-watch in the 105lb scene.

Collazo halted Melvin Jerusalem back in May 2023 and has defended that belt on seven occasions since, including in a title unification with then WBA champion, Knockout CP Freshmart, also known as Thammanoon Niyomtrong, in November 2024.

Since trumping the Thai champion, Collazo has made a total of three defences of the unified title, and he was next set to take on Filipino Canoy, 25-5-2 (15 KOs), on Saturday night.

The duo were planned to top the bill at the Frontwave Arena in California, where amateur standouts Ruslan Abdullaev and Joshua Edwards are also scheduled to appear on the Golden Boy undercard.

However, despite the event being just days away, Canoy has not yet been able to travel to the US due to visa complications and will pull out of the fight ‘if he is unable to fly to America by Thursday night’, according to Daily Tribune.

“As of early Monday afternoon, Canoy was still waiting for the issuance of his US visa. Sources say that if Canoy wont be able to fly to America by Thursday night, he will just stay behind.

“The official weigh-in is set on Friday. The travel documents of Canoy were submitted to the US embassy more than three weeks ago.”

Canoy has fought overseas in both South Africa and Japan in the past, but it is believed that recently tightened U.S. immigration policies, combined with a delay in the announcement of the venue for the event, could be the reasons behind this ongoing issue.

In the latest update from WBO President Gustavo Olivieri, it appears Canoy has now indeed missed his shot, with Mexico’s Luis Castillo floated as a replacement.

Neider Valdez in to face Oscar Collazo, replacing Joey Canoy

Oscar Collazo has a new opponent for Saturday night

Oscar Collazo needs a new opponent for Saturday, and he just may have one.

Lance Pugmire reports that Golden Boy secured Mexico’s Neider Valdez to face Collazo this weekend in a DAZN-streamed main event. Pugmire also says that the WBA and WBO have not yet officially confirmed whether they’ll sanction the replacement bout as a title fight.

Collazo was originally set to face Joey Canoy, who had visa issues. Miguel Cotto Promotions tried to get Luis Castillo in as the replacement, but he also doesn’t have a visa.

Valdez (15-3-3, 12 KO) is something of a last-ditch call on paper. He’s 2-3-1 in his last six fights, with losses to contenders Erik Badillo and Erick Rosa, notably. He’s coming off of a six-round draw with .500 record club fighter Gerardo Rodriguez on May 30, so he just fought, too.

Collazo (14-0, 11 KO) will obviously be a huge favorite. He was a clear favorite against Canoy, but Canoy’s level of quality has been proven significantly more than that of Valdez.

Oscar Collazo's lacking contender Neider Valdez steps into title shot

Mexico’s Neider Valdez hasn’t won four of his past six bouts, and one of his victories came against an 0-1 opponent.

Title-fight worthy? Hardly.

Yet, in the desperate situation of needing unified minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo’s Saturday night title defense on DAZN at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California, to mean something, a title fight it is.

Valdez 15-3-3 (12 KOs) arrived in California Wednesday and was quickly added to promotional material marketing his fight versus Puerto Rico’s Collazo 14-0 (11 KOs) as a WBA/WBO title bout despite the challenger residing outside the top 15 contenders of both bodies.

It’s pushing it to make a case that Valdez, 25, belongs in the bout given his recent slide, that includes three losses within a 14-month span into last year.

A March 24 TKO loss to Erik Badillo was followed by a second-round knockout loss to Victor Sebastian Rojas Gonzalez in May 2025.

A first-round TKO victory in March came against the 0-1 Jose Leonard Gomez, and Valdez then took a draw less than three weeks ago versus Gerardo Rodriguez Alvarado in Mexico.

One official connected to the bout said that while Valdez’s credentials for a title shot are flimsy, the dire situation of failing to bring planned top-15 contender Joey Canoy from the Philippines, and then discovering a replacement from Mexico was unavailable, makes the title defense palatable.

DAZN and the ticket office promoted a Collazo title defense, and while Valdez is a lacking challenger, there’s only two days before the title fight.

Collazo To Face Valdez; Visa Issue Costs Canoy 105-Pound Title Fight

Oscar Collazo will face late replacement Neider Valdez on Saturday night in the main event of a Golden Boy Promotions card in Oceanside, California.

Golden Boy announced Wednesday that Mexico’s Valdez replaced Collazo’s original opponent, Joey Canoy, because visa issues prevented the Filipino contender from traveling to the United States. Collazo will defend his Ring, WBA and WBO 105-pound championships versus Valdez in a 12-round strawweight fight DAZN will stream from Frontwave Arena.

Gustavo Olivieri, president of the WBO, posted on X on Tuesday night that Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions had submitted a formal request for another Mexican, Luis Castillo (22-1-1, 14 KOs), to be approved to face Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs). Potential travel issues for Castillo ultimately led to Valdez becoming Collazo’s opponent.
Valdez (15-3-3, 12 KOs) isn’t ranked in the top 15 by the WBA or WBO.

The Monterrey native once challenged for a world title, but he lost by unanimous decision to Erick Rosa in a 12-round fight for the vacant WBA junior flyweight title in December 2024. He has gone 1-1-1 since then and last fought to a six-round majority draw against Gerardo Rodriguez (4-4-1, 1 KO) on May 30 in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Puerto Rico’s Collazo, 29, is ranked No. 9 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list. The southpaw beat Jesus Haro by sixth-round stoppage in his last fight March 14 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Canoy (25-5-2, 15 KOs) is The Ring’s fifth-ranked challenger for his title and is rated No. 5 by the WBO and No. 9 by the WBA. Valdez is not ranked by The Ring.

Oscar Collazo vs Neider Valdez set for flyweight, world titles not on the line

Oscar Collazo will fight as a flyweight on Saturday

As an update for Saturday night’s Golden Boy main event, Oscar Collazo will not be defending his 105 lb world titles, and in fact, won’t be fighting in that division at all.

Taking on late replacement opponent Neider Valdez, who was drafted in on Wednesday to replace Joey Canoy, Collazo will be fighting two divisions up as a flyweight.

This does add a little intrigue, perhaps, as obviously Collazo (14-0, 11 KO) hasn’t fought at this weight since his third pro fight in 2021, and that was at a much lower level, obviously, and 105 lb fighters don’t always move up in weight well, even the really good or great ones.

Every fight since then that Collazo has had has been at the 105 lb limit, where he has established himself as the best in the sport and picked up the WBA and WBO world titles.

Fear not, though, this doesn’t mean both sanctioning bodies will go without making money off these fighters, as the WBO has graciously put their “International” flyweight title on the line for the bout. The WBA apparently couldn’t come up with some type regional or make believe trinket in time, though that could still change by fight time, I guess.

Valdez (15-3-2, 12 KO) should still be seen as a big underdog, but the 25-year-old Mexican is definitely more familiar with the weight.

The actual good reason for this to go on as it is is so that the card didn’t get scrapped and everyone does get paid as scheduled; not just Collazo, but all the undercard fighters, too.

Collazo weighed in at 110½ lbs, with Valdez at 111¼, both comfortably under the new 112 lb limit for the bout.

Griffiths hopes to take next step on Collazo-Valdez undercard

After making the cross-country trip from Pennsylvania to California with his family, Cayden Griffiths was taken to a community center to sign up to play soccer.

A boxing gym in the vicinity caught his mother’s eye. She signed him up, wanting her son to be athletic and able to defend himself.

Griffiths has blossomed into a promising prospect at welterweight and will fight in his first eight-round bout against Alan Crisosto on Saturday on the undercard of unified 105-pound champion Oscar Collazo versus Neider Valdez at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California.

“‘You're gonna sign up for that, too,’ so we signed up for that,” Griffiths told The Ring when recalling what his mother said. “The next day we came in, sparred on the first day, and from there it was like, ‘OK, I'm locked in on this.’ I never showed up to a single soccer practice.”

Griffiths (8-0, 7 KOs) is coming off a first-round knockout against Omar Munguia on March 14. The 20-year-old hurt Munguia inside the opening minute with a left hook to the body before a left hook to the temple sent him to the canvas.

He continued the offensive onslaught, and a left hook to the body and head followed by a right hook led to the second and final knockdown with 51 seconds left in the round as referee David Solivan stopped the fight without a count.

It was Griffiths’ first win by first-round knockout.

Griffiths has developed under the tutelage of Antonio Diaz and Joel Diaz, whom he first met at a local community center when he was 9. Griffiths views them as more than his coaches.

The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, native has sparred with former WBA 154-pound champion Israil Madrimov and, when he was much younger, former unified junior featherweight champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev, among other accomplished pros in the Diaz camp.

“They've become like a second family to me,” Griffiths said. “We've evolved as a team, and I'm just blessed to be in the position because and Antonio and Joel have kind of taken a lot of pride in me.”

Griffiths has tried to add skills from those experiences to his repertoire. At the forefront is 2026 International Boxing Hall of Famer Gennadiy Golovkin, whom he met at 11 in Big Bear, California. He moved around the ring with the former middleweight champion.

That singular moment has stuck with him, and with the time that has elapsed, he hopes they can meet again.
“He's a lot of the reason why I kind of stuck with it,” Griffiths said. “He was somebody that I always admired growing up. I always wanted to be just like him.”

Crisosto (12-6, 8 KOs), of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, represents the first step in the next chapter. With it, Griffiths hopes he can continue his progression.

“It's just a whole different level, because we know big things are coming in the future,” he said. “It's getting to that point now where you know we can't take things lightly.”

Valdez Comes In 6.2 Pounds Overweight For Collazo Fight

What never should’ve been sanctioned as a 105-pound title fight is now not one.

Neider Valdez came in 6.2 pounds over the strawweight limit Friday for his fight against Oscar Collazo on Saturday night in Oceanside, California. Valdez replaced Filipino contender Joey Canoy as Collazo’s opponent Wednesday because visa issues prevented Canoy from entering the United States.

Puerto Rico’s Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs), ranked No. 9 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, owns The Ring, WBA and WBO 105-pound crowns. The WBA declined to sanction Collazo-Valdez as a title bout due to Valdez’s struggles over the past year, but the WBO overlooked his lack of qualifications and approved it as a championship match.

Canoy (25-5-2, 15 KOs, 1 NC) is ranked No. 5 by The Ring and the WBO and No. 9 by the WBA.

Mexico’s Valdez (15-3-3, 12 KOs) fought for the then-vacant WBA light flyweight title in December 2024, but he lost a unanimous decision to Erick Rosa (then 7-0). Since suffering that defeat, Valdez lost by second-round knockout to Victor Rojas (then 8-3-3) in May 2025 and recently settled for a six-round majority draw with Gerardo Rodriguez, who entered their bout with a 4-4 record on May 30 in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Valdez, 25, hasn’t competed in the strawweight division since March 2024, when Mexico’s Erik Badillo (19-0, 8 KOs) stopped him in the fifth round.

Collazo is listed as an astounding 80-1 favorite by DraftKings in a 12-round main event DAZN will stream from Frontwave Arena. The 29-year-old southpaw officially weighed 110.6 pounds for his fight versus Valdez, who stepped on the California State Athletic Commission’s scale at 111.2 pounds.

DAZN’s coverage of the Collazo-Valdez undercard is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).

Oscar Collazo main event now a non-title flyweight bout

Another day, another turn for Oscar Collazo.

Informed early that his replacement opponent, Mexico’s Neider Valdez, had no chance of making the 105-lbs weight limit for Saturday night’s DAZN main-event minimumweight title bout at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California, Collazo weighed in Friday at 110.6lbs while Valdez came in at 111.2lbs.

Collazo’s WBO and WBA belts will no longer be on the line, but the Puerto Rican will fight for the WBA International flyweight strap.

Valdez, 15-3-3 (12 KOs), was summoned this week after top-15 ranked original opponent Joey Canoy could not secure a travel visa to reach the U.S. from the Philippines and first-choice replacement opponent, Luis Castillo of Mexico, couldn't either.

Collazo, 14-0 (11 KOs), told Boxing Scene Thursday he’s considering moving on from the 105lbs division to either seek the winner of the July 20 Shokicki Iwata-Erik Badillo WBC light flyweight title bout, or to make the bigger leap to flyweight and pursue fellow Golden Boy Promotions fighter and unified 112-lbs champion Ricardo Sandoval.

Collazo assured that his power will transfer up in weight, and now he’ll have the opportunity to prove that against Valdez, who has been knocked out twice in the past two-plus years.

Oscar Collazo's quick work prompts call for Ricardo Sandoval

Oscar Collazo’s interest in moving up in weight for a title is genuine.

How worthwhile his second-round knockout victory over Nedier Valdez in a flyweight bout is in question, however.

Collazo, 15-0 (12 KOs), decked Valdez three times in the second frame, gaining the finish at 2-35 of the session with a variety of power punches.

The final sequence was a power left to the body and a right to the head, prompting fight-week replacement Valdez to glance at his corner, who quickly moved to wave the fight over.

Mexico’s Valdez is now 2-4-1 in his past seven bouts.

Whether Saturday’s triumph at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California, qualified as a proving ground or not, Puerto Rico’s unified strawweight champion Collazo said he’s ready to move up two divisions to challenge unified flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval, who’s also promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

“I want to stay in this division,” Collazo said. “I really want Sandoval,. I’m ready to make history.”

Collazo said Valdez brought a game effort in the first round, and finishing him in the second encourages his move up in weight, with Sandoval’s schedule clear.

“I felt great. He was a bit tricky, it was just a matter of time. I was timing [my left hand],” Collazo said. “It was a good stoppage. He was going to get knocked out – a big knockout.”

Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya called Collazo the “biggest little man in the business. Oscar Collazo belongs in the top three in the pound for pound.”

De La Hoya said he wants Collazo-Sandoval in Puerto Rico or Los Angeles.

“Stylistically, it’ll be a war. It’s the best fight to make,” De La Hoya said.
In the co-main event, Mexico’s Yair Gallardo defeated Buneet Singh Bisla by unanimous decision, 97-92, 98-91, 96-93.
