Teofimo Lopez, Rolly Romero have verbal agreement to fight in August, officials say

Two-division former champion Teofimo Lopez and WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero have verbally agreed to an August fight in Las Vegas for Romero’s belt, officials briefed on the matter told Boxing Scene Tuesday.

Romero, 17-2 (13 KOs), has been forced to endure more than a year out of the ring as potential opponents, including Conor Benn, Manny Pacquiao and Devin Haney, have failed to strike a deal with the two-division champion from Las Vegas.

Brooklyn’s Lopez, 22-2 (13 KOs), last fought January 31, losing his WBO 140-pound belt to unbeaten four-division champion Shakur Stevenson at Madison Square Garden.

Lopez’s manager, Keith Connolly, precipitated the news by hinting Monday he was on the cusp of a “gigantic” announcement regarding the fighter that would “blow everyone away.”

Lopez declined to delve into the specifics with Boxing Scene and Romero did not return repeat messages left for him.

After defeating current WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia in the main event of a Saudi Arabia-backed May 2025 card in New York’s Times Square, Romero, 30, has remained sidelined despite the dalliances with the others.

He believed he was opening training camp for WBO welterweight champion Haney in late March, only to see the three-division champion move to other talks, including current conversations with fellow unbeaten Gervonta Davis.

Lopez, 28, also fought on the Times Square card, defeating mandatory contender Arnold Barboza by unanimous decision.

A former pound-for-pound list member who has defeated former undisputed 140-pound champion Josh Taylor and three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko, Lopez told Boxing Scene in March he was moving to welterweight and remaining aligned with his father-trainer Teofimo Lopez Snr.

The fight’s venue and date have yet to be finalized, one of the officials said. Romero fights for Premier Boxing Champions, which sends Lamont Roach Jnr to an August 1 DAZN-TNT card in Las Vegas at Virgin Hotels Resort-Casino.

Rolando Romero and Teofimo Lopez verbally agree to August title fight

Rolando Romero’s long-overdue inaugural title defense could come later this summer

Lance Pugmire, one of the last men standing at the freshly lobotomized BS, reports that WBA welterweight champion Rolando Romero has a “verbal agreement” to meet former two-division champion Teofimo Lopez this coming August.

spam’s Nick Nunan first brought word of the brewing matchup yesterday.

This being the WBA, there are naturally shenanigans afoot. The sanctioning body recently re-introduced their “super” champion status just to foist it on Romero (17-2, 13 KO), who’s been out of action for more than a year since his upset of Ryan Garcia. That status came with the requirement that he meet “world” Jack Catterall within 180 days of his victory over the incredibly hard-done-by Shakhram Giyasov.

An August meeting with Lopez (22-2, 13 KO), who lost his super lightweight belt in a January rout at the hands of Shakur Stevenson, would pretty clearly preclude that. People aren’t going to be busting down the doors to see Romero vs Catterall, but the WBA binning an order barely a month after delivering it is grody even by their non-existent standards.

Taken on its own merits, Romero vs Lopez is a perfectly solid matchup, a reasonable welterweight debut for Lopez and an opportunity for Romero to either cash out or prove that the Garcia win was no fluke. Could be interesting to see how Lopez’s counter-focused style deals with Romero’s profoundly goofy offense.

Teofimo Lopez should be rightfully favourite to win this fight 'but Rolly Romero is on a roll, and has big momentum in his career'.

Note: Lopez in my opinion is at a very important stage of his career 'great fighters in the past, many have displayed the fortitude to comeback from loses. Either by avenging those loses, or continuing on in their careers to win future fights'.

I think for Teofimo Lopez after being beaten in dominant fashion by Shakur Stevenson 'this fight vs. Rolly Romero is a bigger challenge than it would have been a few years ago'.

I will be honest? I would be very content with Rolly Romero won 'he has taken big risk in his career, and is always involved in intriguing and entertaining fights. Whether that be inside the ring, or outside the ring during the build up'.

This should be another one of those fights, as the two characters of each fighter collide etc.

Wasn't he ordered to fight Giyasov and then ordered to fight Catterall as well?
I'd much rather watch Rolly vs. Teo, but it's kinda funny how apparently they just ask nicely and Rolly doesn't care.

To be honest, that's a nice fight. Teo is the superior boxer, but Rolly is getting better and the weight suits him more than Teo. At super lightweight, Teo didn't look like he had much power, and I don't think it's going to be any better at welterweight.

Catterall called him a duck.
Then said he’ll probably have to fight me next.

Does the winner have to fight Catterall?

I don't see that happening. More likely a dropped belt & a bigger money fight with someone else.

As for this bout, at first glance you'd lean towards Teo but Rolly did have things his own way with Garcia. But which Garcia was that? We're hardly talking about a load of stable characters here.

Teofimo Lopez ready to face Rolly Romero in August

Teofimo Lopez looks set to challenge Rolly Romero, the WBA welterweight champion, Lopez has told DAZN.

Lopez is at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, for the card topped by the 154lbs clash between unified champion Xander Zayas and Jaron “Boots” Ennis, and Romero-Lopez seems to be headed to Las Vegas on either August 15 or August 22.

Lopez is 22-2 (13 KOs) and coming off a points loss to Shakur Stevenson in January.

Romero, based in Las Vegas, is 17-2 (13 KOs), scoring wins over Manuel Jaimes and Ryan Garcia following a 2024 stoppage defeat to Isaac Cruz.

Romero-Lopez WBA welterweight title fight set for Aug. 22

Rolando Romero will end a 15-month layoff, making his first WBA welterweight title defense against former two-weight world champion Teofimo Lopez on August 22, The Ring has learned.

Rolando "Rolly" Romero was said to be entertaining a tune-up fight for his first title defense, though plans have changed since.

Teofimo Lopez, who lost the Ring and WBO junior welterweight straps against Shakur Stevenson on January 31, had teased another move up in weight.

His manager, Keith Connolly, said a big decision was forthcoming earlier this week and here it is: another world title shot and chance to become three-division titleholder awaits.

Sam Gordon of The Las Vegas Review-Journal was first to report Romero-Lopez were finalizing terms on Monday.

Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) hasn't boxed since his surprise 12-round points win over Ryan Garcia in May 2025.

The latter now holds the WBC 147-pound title, while Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) made seven appearances at junior welterweight since campaigning at 140 pounds in the second-half of 2022.

So far the votes are for Teo by KO but he has only stopped one of his last nine opponents.

I don't even remember him going for knockouts anymore, he just tries to outpoint opponents.

Rolly, arguably, could have had three KO losses in a row back in 2022-2024 but then outpointed a lethargic Garcia last year to win this vacant belt.

This for me is similar to the Garcia v Benn fight in which one fighter has shown to be levels above the other in the past but they all show inconsistencies from one bout to the next.

Teo should easily beat Rolly & Garcia should easily beat Benn but I never know which version of each is going to turn up.

Rolly Romero-Teofimo Lopez set for T-Mobile Arena for August 22

Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez, a pair of two-division champions in their prime, will receive their due attention when they square off in their summer WBA welterweight title bout.

An official connected to the fight confirmed to Boxing Scene Monday that Romero-Lopez will be staged August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout is expected to be a joint pay-per-view on Prime Video and DAZN.

For Las Vegas’ Romero, 17-2 (13 KOs), the card represents his first title defense at a major venue after he captured the belt by defeating Ryan Garcia in the main event of the May 2025 Times Square card in New York that featured Lopez outpointing Arnold Barboza Jnr.

Romero, 30, previously lost his first 140lbs title defense to Mexico’s Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz in the March 2024 co-main event to Tim Tszyu’s 154lbs title defense defeat to Sebastian Fundora.

New York’s 28-year-old Lopez, 22-2 (13 KOs), has headlined five title fights at New York’s Madison Square Garden, most recently losing his WBO 140lbs belt to four-division champion Shakur Stevenson by unanimous decision on January 31.

‘Put Up or Shut Up’: Rolly Romero vs Teofimo Lopez official for August 22

Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez are set to fight in August

Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez are officially set to fight for Rolly’s WBA welterweight title on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

The fight will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and be available through DAZN and Prime Video on pay-per-view. That means, of course, that DAZN Ultimate subscribers will have access.

Romero (17-2, 13 KO) hasn’t fought since he upset Ryan Garcia to win the WBA title in May 2025. The 30-year-old had negotiated to potentially fight Manny Pacquiao in January, and also went through some back-and-forth with Devin Haney and his team, but nothing came of that.

Teofimo (22-2, 13 KO) last fought in January, getting pretty much blanked over 12 rounds by Shakur Stevenson, and losing the WBO super lightweight title in the process. He’ll go straight for another belt at 147, chasing a world title in a third weight class.

Both fighters have had their setbacks, but maintain name value and are just good at drawing attention.

I think this is also a potentially fascinating style matchup, Lopez has had his ups-and-downs and can be very emotional as a fighter and personality, but when he’s on, he’s a very good boxer. Romero lacks fundamentals or whatever, but he has real grit and can punch, and he just seems sort of indifferent emotionally in ways that Teofimo can’t even pretend he is. As much as the fighting styles, the personality styles may make this fight.

The fight will be officially announced on Thursday, July 9, in Los Angeles.

Rolly Romero facing Lopez in first WBA welterweight title defense

Rolando "Rolly" Romero will put his WBA welterweight title on the line against former two-division champion Teofimo Lopez on Aug. 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, sources confirmed to ESPN on Monday.

The title fight will be available as both a Prime Video and DAZN pay-per-view.

Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) hasn't fought since he stunned Ryan Garcia for the vacant title last May in Times Square. The fight was for the regular version of the title, and Romero was elevated to full champion in August after Jaron "Boots" Ennis vacated the title to move up to 154 pounds.

Romero, 30, has yet to fight since beating Garcia but has been linked to several opponents, including Devin Haney and Manny Pacquiao, for his first title defense. With those fights falling through, Romero will face Lopez, a former champion who is looking to win a world title in a third weight class.

Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) is the former unified lightweight champion and WBO junior welterweight champion. He is moving up to 147 pounds after dropping his title in a one-sided loss to Shakur Stevenson in January.

The 28-year-old was ranked on ESPN's pound-for-pound list before losing to Stevenson and aims to cash in a title opportunity in his first fight at 147 pounds.

Romero, Lopez set friendship aside for high-stakes fight

Rolando Romero and Teofimo Lopez have labeled one another friends and sparred several times together.

Now, they’re being asked to set aside their relationship and slug it out in a high-stakes scrap that will further propel the winner’s career.

Romero and Lopez came face-to-face Thursday during a press conference at Avalon in Los Angeles to begin building up interest in their August 22 bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which is set to headline a DAZN and Prime Video PPV event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Proceedings between Romero and Lopez were cordial – and cringy – which was par for the course for two of boxing's quirkiest characters.

But out-of-the-ring personalities won’t play a part once the punches start flying, as Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) aims to defend his WBA welterweight title for the first time against the former two-division champion Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs), who is making his 147-pound debut.

“I have so much love for Teofimo,” Romero said. “It’s been a hard time trying to make a fight, but we know that Teofimo is gonna fight anyone. So I’m thankful that he stepped up to the plate.”

The last time Romero and Lopez shared a dais was during the buildup of The Ring’s show in Times Square, New York, in May last year.

Romero and Lopez starred in separate fights, with the former pulling off an Upset of the Year contender and decision win against Ryan Garcia in the main event, and the latter scoring a clear unanimous decision win against Arnold Barboza on the undercard.

But Romero failed to seize momentum around the career-best win and has been stuck on the sidelines ever since.
Potential fights against Garcia, Manny Pacquiao, Devin Haney and Conor Benn dragged along and failed to come to fruition.

“I feel really good right now,” Romero said. “I miss this. I miss boxing. I miss all this stuff. I don't do this for anything other than the love of the sport.”

Lopez meanwhile fought in January, only to lose a landslide unanimous decision against Shakur Stevenson.

“It's time to put up or shut up,” Lopez said. “We're at a point in time in my career where everything is at stake, truthfully. Was I just good in the beginning of my career and this is the end of my career? Or is this now the start of something new? I look forward to becoming a three-weight world champion. I'm super stoked.

“To me, I always believe that I have much more. I probably haven't even touched the surface yet. I'm still 28 years young. I'm looking forward to seeing prominent years in my career. Everything is really going to be answered on August 22.”

"Rolly" Romero, a 30-year-old from Las Vegas, finally won the big one against Garcia by dropping his rival in the second round and taking him out of his game en route to cruising to a 12-round unanimous decision win.

Romero looked more polished than the reckless aggressor he was during knockout losses against Gervonta Davis in May 2022 and Isaac Cruz in March 2024.

"The Takeover" Lopez, from Brooklyn, New York, a former Ring and unified lightweight and junior welterweight champion, couldn’t add another feather in his cap by beating Stevenson the same way he did in career-best wins against Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 and Josh Taylor in 2023.

“I faced guys that people didn't want to fight,” Lopez said. “Haney was in negotiations to fight Rolando, and that fell off – who knows why. Maybe because Rolly is a tough guy to face. I'm here to face the best competition at 147 pounds. I'm looking forward to taking over.”

Romero’s trainer Ismael Salas said Lopez is tailor-made for his charge to come out victorious in another career-defining fight.

“This is the perfect fight for Rolly because Lopez is a guy who's coming forward and always leaning with his body forward with his chin up,” Salas said. “Everybody will see. It's going to be an amazing style for us. Rolly will show how much he's improved and matured. He's a real welterweight fighting against someone coming up from 140.”

The challenger's father and head coach, Teofimo Sr., disagreed.

“Any style is better for my son when he's mentally in the fight,” he said. “Everything with my son is mental. When he's on his A-game, no one can beat him. That night against Shakur wasn't his night. It's in the past. We have to move on.”

Now, in nearly six weeks, both fighters will move on to focus on each other as they unleash pent-up aggression. The winner will catapult themselves further to being a power player in the division and remain in position for big-money fights against Garcia, Haney, et al.

“Teofimo is not my friend, he's my little brother,” Romero said. “He's a Hall of Famer, for sure, already. I'm a future Hall of Famer. If I'm to lose this belt, or defend it, whatever, I'd rather it be with him than anyone else. Only God knows what's going to happen.”

Romero opens up on depression, glad big fights fell through

Rolando Romero was lucky.

Following his upset win over Ryan Garcia in May of last year, Romero’s name was linked to the likes of Devin Haney, Conor Benn and Garcia for a rematch.

However, one by one, those bouts fell by the wayside for varying reasons. At the time, Romero was frustrated with the business side of boxing. Now, looking back, the current WBA welterweight champion believes it all worked out for the better.
He said he was battling depression that lasted more than two years.

“I tried to make all of those big fights but remember this: God don’t make mistakes,” Romero told The Ring’s Mike Coppinger. “If I would've fought any of those fights at the time, I would have physically lost because I was not right, but now is the time.”

The 30-year-old from Las Vegas is scheduled to defend his championship against former two-division titleholder Teofimo Lopez on August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on DAZN Pay-Per-View.

So, in the end, Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) landed his big fight. At the same time, he said he won't forget the potential opponents who turned him down.

“They literally all ducked me,” Romero said. “But luckily for me, Teofimo will fight anybody. After I beat Ryan, I went through a crazy depression where I was going to kill myself, but I told Christ I would start to follow him. I was in a depression for 747 days.”

Meanwhile, Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) has received a special opportunity.

A win over Romero would give him a major title in a third weight class, which would cement his place as an accomplished champion. It would also show fans that the lopsided beating he took at the hands of Shakur Stevenson on January 31 is now behind him.

Press Release

WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero (pictured) and former two-division world champion Teofimo Lopez will go toe-to-toe in a high-octane summer showdown Saturday, August 22nd in a PBC pay-per-view event available on DAZN and Prime Video from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Romero and Lopez, two world class fighters meeting in their prime, each enter with extensive experience at the sport’s highest level, along with a fondness for engaging pre-fight build-up that should make this one of summer’s most-discussed matchups. The unorthodox power-puncher known as “Rolly” will make the first defense of his 147-pound title after earning the belt by dropping current Ryan Garcia on his way to a unanimous decision (Garcia is now the reigning WBC welterweight champion). Romero is looking to add another elite fighter to his resume in the former world 135-pound and 140-pound champion Lopez, who will debut at welterweight with a chance to become a three-division world champion and return to his perch on boxing’s pound-for-pound lists.

Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) is known as one of the sport’s most unique and enigmatic personalities, which he backs up with power in both hands as well as an exciting, unique style that makes him a must-see whenever he steps between the ropes. The 30-year-old most recently earned a career-best victory in May 2025, as he captured the Interim WBA Welterweight Title with a unanimous decision over now WBC Welterweight World Champion Ryan Garcia, before being recently elevated. Romero not only completely neutralized Garcia’s vaunted left hook, but was also able to put Garcia on the canvas with a pair of vicious left hooks of his own in round two.

The Las Vegas native first rose to the rank of world champion in May 2023 stopping Ismael Barroso in round nine to win the WBA Super Lightweight World Championship, before relinquishing it in March against Mexican superstar Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz. The Barroso fight was Romero’s first return to the ring since a May 2022 defeat against two-division champion Gervonta Davis. Prior to the Davis fight, the Las Vegas resident Romero won an interim lightweight title in August 2020 by earning a [controversial] decision over then unbeaten Jackson Marinez.

“Four kings? I’m a black knight that delivers a smothered mate,” said Romero.

The 28-year-old Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) has worked his way to the top spot at 135 and 140 pounds throughout an already storied career, and can begin to conquer another weight class on August 22. Representing Brooklyn, New York and now training in Las Vegas with his father, Teofimo Lopez Sr., the two-division champion reached elite status with a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Vasyl Lomachenko in 2020. The triumph saw Lopez unify 135-pound titles and establish himself as one of the next generation of boxing stars, fulfilling the promise he showed representing Honduras at the 2016 Olympics and throughout his undefeated run up the lightweight rankings.

Following a split-decision defeat to George Kambosos that saw both men hit the canvas, Lopez reinvented himself at 140 pounds, showing he was still amongst the sport’s best with an impressive run that saw him capture the world 140-pound crown over Josh Taylor in 2023. At junior welterweight, Lopez bested Arnold Barboza Jr., Sandor Martin (controversially) and Jamaine Ortiz, with his only formal blemish coming in his last outing in January, a decision loss to four-division champion Shakur Stevenson. “We don’t follow the game, we take over!” said Lopez. “That what I intend to show against a person I’ve known since 2015. Rolando is aware of his choice of accepting this fight, so without a doubt, this is a fight you do not want to miss. What greater way to take over than to fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where legends are born and history is made!”

All the pressure is on Teofimo Lopez in this fight 'of course there is always pressure on both fighters. But the mass consensus within the boxing media, is that Lopez is the more talented fighter and should win this fight'.

Note: Rolly Romero in my opinion is in a great position in his career 'although he has stated many fighters avoided him for whatever reason. I think Romero is an asset to any boxing promoter, he is good at building a fight and an interesting character'.

I think Rolly Romero is the bigger underdog in this fight, than he was vs. Ryan Garcia 'but surely his performance vs. Garcia that momentum built from that fight could aid in his challenge vs. Teofimo Lopez' etc.

‘It was out of love’: Rolly Romero talks about giving Teofimo Lopez title shot

Rolly Romero defends his WBA title against Teofimo Lopez next month.

A fight between longtime friends Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez is official for August 22, and while Teofimo might downplay the friendship now that their fight is on, Rolly the Prophet doesn’t deny his enduring love for him. Here, Rolly explains how he knew this moment would come to pass in an interview with Mike Coppinger on behalf of Ring Magazine.

Rolly on knowing Teofimo a long time and his thoughts of him
“I love Teofimo with all my heart and honestly, like he said, I told him in the back room when we were getting ready for a fight — I said ‘you’re going to get another opportunity, Teo. You’re going to move up to ‘47, you’re going to get another opportunity.’ And by grace, for some reason I was the one that was able to give him that opportunity. It was out of love.”

On whether they’ve remained in close contact as of late
“I mean, we went time without talking and all that stuff but he has a family, he has kids, and I got my own stuff I worry about. You know how it is, as an adult you can’t be on top of everybody all the time. I’m my friend’s son’s godfather, I talk to him once a year. But I know for a fact I call that man, he’s going to be at my doorstep if I really need him. And vice versa. And that’s how it is. Whether I’m in contact with you or I’m not, you still be at somebody’s doorstep when they need you, right? Because that’s how some relationships are. You don’t need to be in contact everyday.”

On what it feels like to fight someone he’s friends with
“I mean people hurt each other that they love and they care for everyday…People you don’t love can’t hurt you.”
