Claressa Shields next fight set, returning to middleweight to face unified champion

Claressa Shields will go back to 160 to take on Kaye Scott in August

Claressa Shields will return to the middleweight division to face unified WBC and WBA titleholder Kaye Scott.

The fight will stream live on DAZN on Saturday, August 15, from State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The 31-year-old Shields (18-0, 3 KO) last fought as a middleweight in 2023, when she shut out Maricela Cornejo over 10 rounds. Since then, she’s fought as a “heavyweight,” which has been functionally the same as fighting as a light heavyweight in women’s boxing, as Shields has never weighed in over a 175 lb limit. Her 2024 win over Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse was for both a heavyweight and light heavyweight title, even.

Shields has run into the problem of running out of interesting opposition, which comes from the fact that she is simply drastically better than the talent around her at the weights she can make. Her world title journey as a professional has seen her go from 168 to 160 to 154, then back to 160, then 175, and now back down to 160 as she looks to find suitable opponents from a field that has run thin, at least in terms of people she hasn’t already beaten once or twice.

Scott is a 42-year-old Australian with a pro record of 5-1-1 (0 KO). She lost her first bid for a world title in late 2024, when Desley Robinson beat her to win the vacant IBF middleweight title. She then fought Olivia Curry in September 2025 for the vacant WBC and WBA titles, and that fight went to a draw.

Scott won a majority decision over Curry in a December rematch, claiming those still-vacant belts.

Scott turned pro at the age of 39 in November 2023 following a solid amateur career for Australia. On-paper, she frankly does not present much of a challenge for Shields, but she is truly about as good an option as is available for Claressa, who has enough beef with Most Valuable Promotions — the group that control a large portion of notable women’s boxing at this point — that she’s been banned from their events.

“At this point in my career, every fight is about legacy,” Shields said in the press release for this fight. “Every fight now is about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible — for myself, for women’s boxing, and for the next generation coming behind me. Kaye Scott is a champion, and I respect what she’s accomplished. But becoming undisputed at 160 pounds again starts with beating the best. That’s always been my mindset. I don’t chase easy fights, I choose meaningful ones.”

“I’ve dedicated my life to the sport of boxing, achieving success with the Australian National Team and as a professional, ” said Scott. “I’m extremely proud to defend my WBC and WBA world title belts against Claressa Shields.

“I believe the bigger the challenge, the bigger the opportunity, and on August 15 I have the chance to show the world exactly what I’m capable of. I’m in the best shape of my life and ready to test myself against the very best. I’m excited, motivated and prepared to step into that ring and prove that I am the best middleweight in the world.”

Shields last fought on February 22, beating Franchon Crews-Dezurn by decision in a rematch. The fight in August will be Shields’ first outside of her native Michigan since her 2022 trip to London to defeat longtime rival Savannah Marshall.

Claressa Shields-Kaye Scott set for Aug. 15 in Atlanta

Claressa Shields will make her return to middleweight to face Kaye Scott for her WBA and WBC titles on August 15 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The card will be streamed live on DAZN.

Shields (18-0, 3 KOs), a two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist and who has become an undisputed champion in three divisions, last fought at middleweight in 2023 when she beat Maricela Cornejo by unanimous decision. Her last three bouts have been at heavyweight.

Shields, 31, last fought on February 22, beating Franchon Crews Dezurn by unanimous decision in their rematch.

The 42-year-old Scott (5-1-1) of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, won the then-vacant WBA and WBC titles in December with a majority decision victory in her rematch against Olivia Curry.

This exemplifies the biggest issue I have with women's boxing. A 42-year-old, seven-fight novice is a unified world champion.

Biggest challenge for Shields will be losing 15 pounds and staying in fighting shape.

She's got some Baby fat on her at 170 plus. I think she could get back down to 160 without too much discomfort. It'll be easier for her than it would be for a guy that size to attempt the same thing I think, but a sluggish performance out of her is certainly possible.

And even a sluggish performance results in an easy UD win (9 rounds to 1, if not a complete shut out) for Shields.

Yep. She's one of the more predictable fighters in the sport.

I couldn't help but laugh a little at one article I saw where the headline was "Shields says 20 pound weight loss won't cause her to lose any power" and I thought to myself No sh*t, she ain't got no power to lose.

Mercado signs with Salita Promotions, to face Tagoe in return

Ernesto "Tito" Mercado has a new promoter.

The junior welterweight contender signed a long-term partnership with Salita Promotions and Wynn Records. His return is set for August 15 against Emmanuel Tagoe, it was announced on Thursday.

The bout will be featured as the co-main event for the show headlined by Claressa Shields vs. Kaye Scott at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on DAZN.

Mercado (19-0, 18 KOs), a knockout artist from Pomona, California, is rated No. 4 by the WBO and No. 5 by the IBF at 140 pounds and considered by many a surefire candidate to be a future world titleholder.

“What made this the right fit was that it felt like family," Mercado said in a statement.

"That's important to me, because boxing has always been a family business. My father Neto has been my trainer since I was five years old, and I wanted to be with a team that believes in me, keeps me active and shares the same vision for where my career is headed.

"There were other opportunities, but this one felt different. Salita stays active, puts on quality shows and keeps his fighters busy. I'm an active fighter, and I want to fight the best as often as possible. I believe this partnership puts me in the best position to become a world champion."

The last few months have been busy for the 24-year-old, who's been linked to several other entities. On June 2, it was announced that Mercado signed a promotional pact with Southern California-based upstart DMG Boxing, but Mercado never competed under the company's banner. Instead, he fought on a Misfits Pro card on June 19 and stopped Juan Carlos Burgos in the second round.

In April, Mercado revealed he parted ways with Matchroom Boxing after signing with Eddie Hearn in September 2024 as a lauded free agent who had wins against Jeremia Nakathila, Xolisani Ndongeni, Hank Lundy and Jayson Velez. Mercado had two fights with Matchroom in 2025, knockout wins over Jose Pedraza and Antonio Moran.

Mercado has been calling for fights against Shakur Stevenson, Richardson Hitchins, Keyshawn Davis, Dalton Smith, Emiliano Vargas, and others. The onus now falls on Salita's shoulders to get Mercado the meaningful matchups he's looking for.
“Tito is one of the most exciting young fighters in boxing today," Salita said in a statement.

"His knockout power, discipline, and relentless style make him a must-watch every time he steps into the ring. We believe he has the talent and work ethic to become one of the biggest stars in the sport, and we’re proud to be part of what we believe can be a historic journey.”

Tagoe (34-2, 16 KOs) was last under the bright lights when he lost a unanimous decision to Ryan Garcia in April 2022. However, the 37-year-old from Accra, Ghana, has fought just twice since then, scoring wins against unheralded opposition.

"There wasn't a lot of time to find an opponent, but I think they picked the right guy," Mercado said. “Tagoe went the distance with Ryan Garcia, so this is an opportunity for me to make a statement. I want to go in there, get him out of there and continue climbing the rankings.

"The goal is simple – become a world champion. That's what we've been working toward my entire life. Every fight is another step closer, and I want to put myself in a position where the biggest fights can't be avoided."
