Re: The 1970s: A Golden Decade of Boxing
The next day, a Tuesday, on June 27th, the Quarry Brothers, Jerry and Mike got stopped by the Soul Brothers, Muhammad Ali and Bob Foster.
Foster stopped Mike with one of the wickedest hooks ever thrown in the history of boxing to retain his World Light-heavyweight Championship belt.
In the main event in the same Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV, Ali beats the other Quarry brother, Jerry, in their rematch. This time, Ali gave him a shellacking to erase all doubts. The referee stopped the contest in 7 rounds.
It was Ali's third fight in 1972 and sixth fight overall since losing to the great Smokin' Joe Frazier for the Heavyweight World Crown since 1971.
Ali then would meet Foster in November, stopping Foster in 8 delirious and entertaining rounds and became The Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year of 1972 alongside the great Carlos Monzon as co-winners.

This was one of Ali's best post-exile performances. Quarry did his best but had no chance.
The punch that Foster landed on Mike Quarry was brutal. Foster may have been the hardest hitting light heavyweight of all time.
