Joe Cordina out, Albert Bell to face Abdullah Mason on July 4

Abdullah Mason has a new opponent for his homecoming bout on July 4.

Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) will now defend his WBO lightweight title against Albert Bell at Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio, in a 12-round main event that will be streamed worldwide by DAZN and televised by TNT in the United States.

Bell (28-0, 9 KOs) had already been training with a date booked, July 18, for a DAZN co-main event slot against Andy Cruz in an IBF title eliminator on a Matchroom show headlined by Diego Pacheco-Immanuwel Aleem in Carson, California. Instead, the 33-year-old Bell gets a title shot in his home state two weeks earlier after of Cordina’s withdrawal.

The Ring has confirmed Cordina, a former two-time junior lightweight champion from Wales, was forced to withdraw after a visa issue prevented him from traveling to the United States. ThaBoxingVoice first reported the opponent switch on X.

Bell, a Toledo, Ohio native, last boxed August 30, when he scored a points win over Keith Hunter. He's ranked No. 3 by the IBF and three places lower with the WBO.

The 34-year-old Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs) is the WBO’s mandatory challenger for Mason’s championship.

The 22-year-old Mason, The Ring's No. 5-rated lightweight, will make the first defense of his WBO crown next month, having won a then-vacant belt with a thrilling unanimous decision over Sam Noakes on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Cordina is out. Bell is in. Fight didn't look to be especially competitive either way.

Mason can build up his name on undefeated cherry picker. Or Bell can prove he is better than his resume. I like this fight

Bell wants Zepeda-Roach winner after unexpected title shot vs. Mason

Albert Bell didn’t see it coming, but he’s happy it happened.

The 33-year-old lightweight contender was a few weeks away from facing Andy Cruz in an IBF eliminator on July 18. Those plans, however, drastically changed as he’ll now get a crack at the WBO 135-pound strap held by Abdullah Mason on July 4 at Wolfstein Center in Cleveland.

Mason (20-0, 17 KOs), ranked No. 5 by The Ring, was scheduled to take on former world champion Joe Cordina, but the Welshman was denied a visa to enter the United States.

Bell will have to prepare for a stylistically different opponent, but having waited so long for a chance to become a world champion, the Toledo native jumped at the chance to face Mason, the youngest male world champion in boxing, who is 11 years his junior.

“If you know my story, this is the opportunity I've been waiting on,” Bell told The Ring. “To get a direct shot at the belt made too much sense. May the best man win.”

Bell (28-0, 9 KOs) has already been putting in the work during training camp. He'll be in fight shape. He could hardly stop himself from smiling. That grin isn’t solely because of what’s directly in front of him, but also because of what may come in the future.

He doesn’t want to get too ahead of himself, but he wants to face whoever has the WBC lightweight title next. William Zepeda and Lamont Roach will clash for the vacant strap on August 1.

“I feel like both would be tough fights,” Bell said. “I got big goals. All I want is big fights."

Mason vs. Bell will stream worldwide on DAZN and will be televised by TNT in the U.S.

Bell will be a more difficult opponent for Mason than Cordina would have been.

On paper it looks that way. The odds reflect that as well. Mason was 9 to 1 over Cordina, he's more like 4.5 to 1 over Bell.

Palacios feels Carrington overlooking him, hungry for upset

Rene Palacios was a good amateur in Mexico before leaping to the sport's professional ranks aged 18.

Since then, he's worked away quietly almost exclusively in his homeland before seizing an opportunity on January 30.

He earned a 10-round split decision win over seasoned contender Sulaiman Segawa (18-6-1, 7 KOs) for a vacant regional featherweight title on a ProBox show, launching him into the public consciousness.

In no mood to stay at that level, the 25-year-old jumped at an even bigger chance to face WBC titleholder Bruce Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) on Saturday at Cleveland's Wolstein Center.

"I believe it's my time," Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs) told The Ring. "I wanted this fight to show the world that I'm capable and the best. These are the type of fights that need to happen and I need to prove myself."

20 fights and seven years into his pro career, Palacios recognizes the sizeable task ahead but believes his hunger will separate them come fight night.

"[Carrington] is a talented world champion but hasn't consolidated himself yet," said the challenger.

"I believe he [still] lacks [in some areas] and I'm going to show it on July 4. I'm very determined, like a starving dog.

The pair share a common opponent in Segawa. Carrington won a 10-round majority decision over the Ugandan in September 2024, while Palacios' coming out party came at the 35-year-old's expense earlier this year.

"He was a lot more complicated against Carrington than he was for me, I was able to adapt," Palacios said.

"I saw things in [Carrington's MD10 win over Segawa] we could capitalize on. I see a little similarities between Segawa and myself that I can use in this fight and that's what we're going to do."

Palacios, who arrives after a three-month training block in Mexico, remains under the radar and that makes him even more dangerous.

"I feel Carrington is overlooking me and that's a big mistake on his part," he continued.

"I'm hearing talks about a fight with [Ring and undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya] Inoue, as well as others but I'm going to demonstrate who I am; I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

"I've been preparing all my life for this moment and I'm not going to let it go. On July 4, Mexico will have its 31st featherweight world champion - I promise you that."

Palacios' advisor Robert Diaz has known the world title challenger since his teenage years and was in no rush to reach this point, though stressed his fighter felt differently.

"Once the fight was presented to him, he was like, 'I want it.' I like hearing that from a young fighter. It wasn't about the money, nor anything but fighting for a world title and becoming world champion," Diaz said.

"He's working hard as always, he's happy, excited and I have a good feeling the fans are going to win. It's going to be a great fight and Mexico is going to have a brand new champion."

Carrington, The Ring's No. 3 featherweight, was a standout amateur before turning professional in October 2021. He enjoyed a breakout 2023 campaign, winning five fights and earning The Ring's Prospect of the Year award.

"Shu Shu" carried that momentum into 2024, turning into a contender with victories over Brayan De Gracia (TKO8) and Segawa before claiming the vacant WBC title with a ninth-round stoppage of Carlos Castro on January 31.

Abdullah Mason, Albert Bell ready for unexpected clash

Neither Abdullah Mason nor Albert Bell anticipated they’d be sharing the ring against each other in the near future.

The Ohio natives have sparred against one another, but the stakes will be significantly higher come Saturday night.

Mason makes the first defense of his WBO lightweight title against Bell at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center on DAZN and TNT. The card is the first installment of “The Fight” series, which will be showcased once a month on DAZN and TNT.

Mason, 22, was originally scheduled to face former junior lightweight world champion Joe Cordina. However, the Welshman was unable to get a visa because of an assault charge, paving the way for Bell to step in with a little over a week’s notice.

“It was definitely unexpected,” Mason said at the final press conference on Thursday. “Albert Bell, that's our guy from Toledo, but it's boxing. You’ve got to be prepared for anything, and I'm prepared to come out on top. Everything happens for a reason. I'm the youngest world champion in boxing for a reason, and I'm prepared to show that when I step in the ring.”

“It caught me by surprise,” Bell added. “It wasn’t an ideal opponent for me. I didn't really have thoughts on fighting Abdullah, especially no time soon, but everything made sense. I talked to my pops about it, talked to the Masons, and stepped in to save the card, get my world title opportunity and put on the show for all of Ohio.”

Mason (20-0, 17 KOs), the youngest male champion in boxing, won the then-vacant WBO belt with a thrilling unanimous decision victory over Sam Noakes in November in Saudi Arabia. While he fought toe to toe with the previously undefeated Englishman, he doesn’t anticipate every fight playing out like that.

“It was definitely a much-needed experience, and that's not a type of fight that you fight all the time in your career,” Mason said. “That's something I felt like I had to do that night. Each night is different, and it definitely gave me some insight on how I go about the rest of my fights in my career.”

The 33-year-old Bell (28-0, 9 KOs), who is three inches taller and whose reach is four inches longer than Cordina, had been scheduled to fight Andy Cruz in an IBF title eliminator on July 18 in Carson, California. He last fought in August, beating Keith Hunter by unanimous decision. Bell used to be promoted by Top Rank, but they amicably parted ways.

“We’re at the top level,” Bell said. “We’ve been in there with all the styles in the world. Cruz does fight a more moving style. I got some experience with Abdullah already. So just tailor the adjustments to that, and it’s really just about being in shape and being prepared. Boxing is all about adjustments.”

Two of Mason’s brothers, Ibrahim and Abdurrahman, are scheduled to fight on the untelevised portion of the card. Sharing the card with them in Cleveland adds to the homecoming bout and was something he and his siblings had visualized before joining the pro ranks.

“It's something that me and my brothers’ been looking forward to doing since we were amateurs,” Mason said. “We fought on the same card a few times as amateurs, and all of us together, we did it on the last show that my father threw here in Cleveland, and it was huge. At that time, we were like, ‘Yo, we do this on a professional level, it's gonna be big for Cleveland.’

“It’s big for not only Cleveland now, but it's on TNT, so this is a national stage, DAZN, and I'm just excited to be able to put this show on with two of my brothers on a card.”

Abdullah Mason reunites with Albert Bell for TNT's first 'The Fight'

On a special night in a unique event, Abdullah Mason will set out to prove he’s a rare talent.

Boxing’s youngest world champion, Cleveland’s Mason, 22, makes the first defense of his WBO lightweight belt at his hometown Wolstein Center versus unbeaten contender Albert Bell Saturday night in the main event of TNT’s new boxing series, “The Fight” that will also be streamed on DAZN.

“This is a world stage, and I’m excited to put on a show,” Mason said. “We’re going to show up and do our job.”

Mason, 20-0 (17 KOs), won the belt vacated by Top Rank stablemate Keyshawn Davis on November 22, when he defeated Sam Noakes by unanimous decision in Saudi Arabia.

“It was definitely a well-needed experience,” Mason said.

He called the opponent switch to his former Top Rank stablemate “unexpected… but you’ve got to be prepared for everything. I’m the youngest world champion for a reason. Fight night, I’m prepared to do what I need to do.”

Toledo, Ohio’s Bell, 28-0 (9 KOs), replaced England’s Joe Cordina, who was denied entry to the U.S. over travel visa issues. He walked away from a July 18 bout against Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz to accept the bout.

“It caught me by surprise, but I’m here to put on a show,” Bell said. “Just tailor the adjustments… boxing is all about being in shape. I know he’s coming. I just need to be the best version of myself.”

In the co-main event, Brooklyn’s Bruce “ShuShu” Carrington makes his first WBC featherweight title defense versus ProBoxTV product Rene Palacios, 19-0-1 (10 KOs).

Carrington wants to parlay the victory toward a unification bout against one of the other three champions, Rafael Espinoza (WBO), Angelo Leo (IBF) or Brandon Figueroa (WBA).

“He’s a good fighter. I like to challenge myself,” Carrington said. “He fights with his heart on his sleeve, I like that.”

His title victory over Carlos Castro showed he can handle adversity and find a way to win.

Mexico’s heavy-handed southpaw Palacios, in his first scheduled 12-round bout, said he’s “enthused” for the title shot and after winning as an underdog in January, he said his strong camp and analysis of Carrington makes him believe he can wrest the title away in Carrington’s first defense.

The main card also features Cleveland welterweight Delante “Tiger” Johnson, 17-0 (8 KOs), meeting unbeaten Christopher Guerrero, 16-0 (9 KOs), in a battle expected to showcase the 2021 U.S. Olympian who’s trained by respected cornerman Brian “BoMac” McIntyre.

“This is a dream come true, we’re going to put on a show Saturday,” Johnson said after his impressive knockout of ProBox’s Nicklaus Flaz in November. “People were sleeping on me, so I had to sleep him. I believe I’m the best fighter in the division.

“We’ll keep improving each fight.”

McIntyre says Johnson has the disposition and talent to pursue a dominant career path similar to that of the trainer’s best fighter, five-division world champion Terence Crawford.

Mason’s brothers, Ibrahim and Abdurrahman, will also fight on the card.
