Vito Mielnicki-Ammo Williams Set For Sept. 4 In Newark

Vito Mielnicki will make his Matchroom Boxing debut against his most known, proven opponent to date.

The Ring has learned that the middleweight contender will square off against Austin “Ammo” Williams in a fight DAZN will stream September 4 from Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Mielnicki (23-1, 13 KOs), of nearby Roseland, will box at the venue for the sixth time since he made his pro debut at the home arena of the NHL’s Devils as a 17-year-old high student in July 2019.

Mielnicki’s middleweight championship aspirations hinge on beating Williams, a southpaw who lost a unanimous decision to WBC 160-pound champ Carlos Adames in his last fight March 21 in Orlando, Florida.

The 24-year-old contender has won 15 straight fights since James Martin upset him by majority decision in an eight-rounder in April 2021. Mielnicki fought to a 10-round majority draw with unbeaten contender Connor Coyle (22-0, 10 KOs) in February 2025, but the result of their bout was changed to a no-contest because Northern Irishman tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Mielnicki is ranked No. 2 by the WBO and No. 7 by the IBF and WBC.

Matchroom Boxing, the promotional company run by Eddie Hearn, announced it signed Mielnicki on Saturday. He was previously promoted by Sampson Boxing and Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. and fought on cards arranged by Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.

Williams (20-2, 13 KOs), a Milwaukee native who fights out of West Palm Beach, Florida, has lost only to Adames (25-1-1, 18 KOs) and WBO super middleweight champ Hamzah Sheeraz (23-0-1, 19 KOs). England’s Sheeraz stopped Williams in the 11th round of their June 2024 bout.

Williams, 30, is rated No. 11 by the WBO and WBC and No. 14 by the IBF.

Vito Mielnicki Jr vs Austin Williams reportedly set for September 4th in Newark

Vito Mielnicki Jr’s Matchroom debut could pit him against “Ammo” Williams

Days after middleweight contender Vito Mielnicki Jr joined forces with Matchroom Boxing, Keith Idec reports that he’ll meet recent title challenger Austin “Ammo” Williams on September 4th in “White Magic’s” familiar stomping grounds of Newark, New Jersey.

Mielnicki (23-1, 13 KO) stands unbeaten in his last 16 fights, the lone blemish a majority draw against Connor Coyle that was later overturned to a no contest when Coyle failed a drug test. Despite lacking a signature win, he sits at no. 2 in the WBO rankings, meaning a win here could put him in position for a title shot once the logjam caused by Janibek Alimkhanuly’s suspension clears up.

Williams (20-2, 13 KO) is Mielnicki’s toughest foe to date on paper, but finds himself in a rough spot after once again falling well short in a major bout. Despite rebounding nicely with four straight wins following a destructive loss to Hamzah Sheeraz, Williams had little to offer Carlos Adames in last March’s title shot, hitting the deck early and absorbing quite a bit of punishment in an admirably gutsy effort.

Just because he’s not champ material doesn’t mean he’s not a potential landmine for Mielnicki, though. I like the matchmaking here; we’ll let you know when and if it becomes official.

This potential match up would be an intriguing one between two boxers trying to solidify just where they stand in the current MW picture. Williams has fallen short when he's stepped up (losses to Sheeraz and Adames) but a win in this fight could propel him to another high-level bout, while Mielnicki, who has yet to take a serious step up in competition (yes, nice wins over undefeated trio of Huerta, Nmomah, and Gardzielik) can't afford a slip up without jeopardizing his immediate title aspirations.
