Have to admit I'm a little dismayed to see Williams back in the ring after "retiring" more than two years ago. His last few outings were not good ones.

At first glance, the 34-year-old Liam Williams, who campaigned at 154lbs in his prime, appears to be a stepping-stone litmus-test opponent for a 25-year-old, low-tier regional prospect who is naturally a 168lb fighter.

Williams has been retired for 2½ years and has won only two fights, both against journeymen, in the past five years and ten months.

However, Elvis Ahorgah has a Mark de Mori-style padded record: eleven of his fifteen wins came against opponents with appalling losing resumes (a combined aggregate record of 39 wins from 151 bouts).

Ahorgah has also been dropped, stopped, outboxed and hurt multiple times by modest opposition, while Williams’ losses came against marquee names and current or former world champions such as Andrade, Sheeraz, Eubank Jr. and Smith.

On paper, this looks like a tricky fight for Williams, but if he has anything left, he should comfortably score a late stoppage victory because he has operated several levels above the Ghanaian.

That said, I’m not very confident in the prediction because Williams is past his prime, relatively old, inactive and on a poor run of form.

Liam Williams must prove he is medically fit to box before July 31 bout in Nigeria

Liam Williams will have to travel with a medical release letter from the British Boxing Board of Control if he is to continue his career in Nigeria.

The Welsh former world title challenger is 25-5-1 (20 KOs) but has not fought since a one-round defeat to Hamzah Sheeraz in early 2024.

Williams retired citing possible chronic traumatic encephalopathy as a contributing factor having sustained several concussions in his career.

Now 34, Williams is scheduled to fight in Lagos on Friday, July 31, against the well-travelled Elvis Ahorgah.

“After a lot of fuss and waiting around, here we have it,” Williams posted on social media. “Bit of a mad one, I didn’t plan on Nigeria any time soon but no complaints.”

However, Dr Ezekiel Adamu, head of Balmoral Promotions, insists Williams will have to prove he is medically fit to box before he steps into the ring.

“He’s going to come up with the medicals before he gets into the ring and obviously we’ve got the same medicals you’ve got there as well too,” said Dr Adamu. “Everywhere in the world, that’s what we’ve got here as well. We’ve got doctors, we’ve got ambulances, we are going to do all our scans and everything. I believe he’s going to come with all his scans to be sure that he’s match fit. There’s also medicals before the fight as well, too.”

Asked whether he would consult with the British Boxing Board of Control about the fight, Dr Adamu added: “Every fighter has to come with a release letter, so before he even fights, he has to get a release letter from the BBB of C. So I believe that should answer that question.”

This one is definitely a cringeworthy fight. Outside of Williams getting seriously hurt, I think the worst thing that could happen is that he wins the bout and wants to fight again.

A battering , or at least a one sided defeat will hopefully convince him to retire again, for good
