Salisbury Times, The
Monday, March 04, 1957

"A 266- pound heavyweight who narrowly missed death in a tight a 335-pound South African was reported recovering in a hospital today. Doctors said a 24-hour operation saved the life of Bruce Olson, the 6-loot, 4-inch, Kent, Wash., fighter who suffered a brain hernmorrhage in his bout with 7-foot, 2-inch Ewart Potgieter Olson was knocked out in the sixth round of a scheduled 10- round bout Saturday night. Helped to his feet after the count, he took a few wild sank onto his stool in the corner and collapsed."

Nevada State Journal
Saturday, March 30, 1957

"Athletic Commissioner Douglas O. Hayden said today that a fight scheduled this Saturday in Salem, Ore., between 335-pound Ewart Potgieter and Frankie Buford looked to him like a "mismatch." "It appears to me that putting a giant like Potgieter against a 210-pounder like Buford, who has no victories listed since 1953, is not only as a mismatch but is bad Hayden said. "I don't think it is the kind of fight that the public would like. These darn mismatches are bad for boxing" Hayden added. "Something has to be done about them or somebody will be killed. In fact, didn't Bruce Olson suffer a brain injury when Potgieter knocked him out earlier this Potgieter, a South African whose West Coast bookings are handled by Sid Flaherty, knocked out the 266-pound Olson at Salem on March 2. The fighter was taken to the hospital where he remained three weeks after suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage."

boxrec lists olsen as dieing on march 2 1957 yet these newspaper reports claim by march 4 olsen was still alive! even a march 30 newspaper article states olsen only suffered brain damage but was still alive!

whats boxrec editors thoughts??

Might have actually happened but not all 24 carried it at once. Some "popular" people have a crew of pall bearrers and work they in shifts.
