Alan Minter
I had a short discussion yesterday with a (new) relative who told me he had had a match with Minter back in the day, but I couldn't find any proof for his story when I later tried to google it. I don't think he made it up but you never know. First I thought it was an amateur bout but then I remember he also said he did some exhibitions so I'm not sure anymore. Is Minter's am record complete in boxrec? Was he involved in exhibitions?

I don't think many fighters amateur records are complete on here. Minter allegedly had around 145 amateur bouts, it only shows 24 on boxrec.Sweet Dick Willie wrote: ↑22 Jul 2026, 04:47 I had a short discussion yesterday with a (new) relative who told me he had had a match with Minter back in the day, but I couldn't find any proof for his story when I later tried to google it. Re: Alan Minter
BoxRec amateur records are definitely incomplete. Did you relative say what year he fought Minter?

Yeah, that's what I thought. I have very narrow knowledge in amateur boxing.Controversial wrote: ↑22 Jul 2026, 06:50 I don't think many fighters amateur records are complete on here. Minter allegedly had around 145 amateur bouts, it only shows 24 on boxrec.

Re: Alan Minter
No but from what I understood it must have been somewhere around 1970, if it was indeed an amateur bout. He said he had about ten fights and then retired from the sport after Minter gave him a beating. Rocked him good in the third.
Then he said he also had some exhibition matches, but I'm not really sure what that means in his context.

Minter was ABA champ in 1971, boxed in the 1972 Olympics getting a Bronze medal and turned pro in October 1972. I would hazard a guess that Minter was a fairly experienced amateur in 1970, from what I've read he was selected for the England training squad in Feb 1970. So unsure if your relative would've boxed him in 1970 if he was only a novice. Minter would've been 18 or 19 in 1970, he started boxing aged 12Sweet Dick Willie wrote: ↑22 Jul 2026, 10:02No but from what I understood it must have been somewhere around 1970, if it was indeed an amateur bout. Ah, that is true. Must have been earlier then. I think I'll just ask him for more details the next time it's possible. In the meantime if someone has some more detailed info on Minter's amateur record, I would be very grateful.

Re: Alan Minter
He had a younger brother called Mick who also boxed as an amateur and later a pro, maybe getting them mixed upSweet Dick Willie wrote: ↑22 Jul 2026, 10:26 Ah, that is true. Re: Alan Minter
I heard that Minter was nicknamed "Boom Boom" during his amateur days because - allegedly - he would grunt when landing punches. I recall reading that, on at least one occasion, the referee warned Minter about this, because supposedly it amounts to trying to intimidate the opponent unfairly.
If OP's relative got beaten up by Minter, that's a badge of honor. Minter was a tough mofo. Definitely one of my favorites from the '70s.
Also, BoxRec mistakenly lists Minter's height as 5'9". All wrong. The guy was easily 5'11" or 6". That's confirmed by the live broadcasts of his bouts. Mods: you gotta fix that error.

I know that he's 70+. He is my spouse's aunt's husband and I just met him for the first time. They live in the UK but were visiting here and were over at our place, and just as he was leaving he noticed my collection of boxing books and we started talking boxing.
Mixing Minter up with his brother could make sense, I heard that the man does have some memory issues. I didn't notice it while we were speaking as he seemed so sharp.

Yeah maybe getting them mixed up. Alan Minter would’ve been 76 this September. His brother Mick was a few years younger so ages are about right. Mick boxed in the Southern ABAs as a light middleweight in 1975 and turned pro in 1976.Sweet Dick Willie wrote: ↑05 Aug 2026, 02:20I know that he's 70+. Re: Alan Minter
Amateur boxing on boxrec are maybe 30% complete. Especially outside of UK and US. Friend of mine had over 150 fights, lot of them on national level. Boxrec have listed only 3 of them. THO it is better with current fighters than past fighters.

Re: Alan Minter
I wouldn't say it was anywhere near 1 in 3, more like 0.5% in total, probably less. Pick any fighter and look at their amateur record, chances are it will be pretty bare or missing several bouts. As an example Leo Atang is a new UK prospect, 19 years old and only a pro for one year and his amateur record is missing quite a few fights.
Re: Alan Minter
I have a lot more amateur results on Alan Minter, going back into the mid 1960s...if you will tell me your relative's name I can let you know if I have anything on the bout.
