Devin Haney vs. Liam Paro | DAZN - December 19, 2026

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Eddie Hearn targeting December date for Liam Paro-Devin Haney

Matchroom are hoping to make Liam Paro-Devin Haney in Australia for December 7.

The junior-welterweight division has been transformed throughout the course of 2024, owing to Ryan Garcia’s victory over Haney in April and Paro’s unexpected win over Subriel Matias two months later.

Haney’s defeat by Garcia has since been ruled a no contest, on the grounds of the overweight Garcia testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs and subsequently being banned for 12 months.

The WBC title the 25-year-old Haney entered the ring with that night is on course to be contested by Alberto Puello and Sandor Martin, but Paro has been promised a homecoming fight in his home country and Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn wants to tempt Haney to return there again – two years after he twice travelled there to defeat George Kambosos Jnr.

Those two victories, and those since then over the great Vasiliy Lomachenko and Regis Prograis, transformed Haney’s career and profile to the extent that fighting in Australia may no longer carry the same appeal, but Hearn told BS: “It’s a good fight. It’s a fight that Devin thinks he can win. Obviously, he can come back. He’s in recess with the WBC, so it’s a unification/regaining a title [fight].

“It’s a fight that Liam would like as well. Devin’s got a good profile in Australia with those two Kambosos fights. So it could be an option. I spoke to him [Thursday] night, and he says if the deal’s right, I don’t think he’d have a problem going.

“The plan for Liam Paro is to fight December 7 in Australia. That’s the aim. We’re in conversations with various state governments to hold Liam Paro’s fight. Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide.

“There is still a chance [the opponent] could be the [Jack] Catterall-[Regis] Prograis winner, but that’s unlikely, given the timing. I still would like to look at a fight between Devin Haney and Paro, or if not, another contender in the division.

“I like the Kambosos fight. Obviously, it’s two Aussies; Kambosos has been at lightweight for a long time; that’s a fight that could make sense. No major discussions, but it would be an interesting fight.”

Hearn had previously spoken of the winner of Jack Catterall-Regis Prograis being installed as Paro’s first challenger, but their fight being postponed from August 24 to October 26 makes it almost certain that they will not be ready for December 7.

The promoter regardless has plans for another of his British fighters, the popular heavyweight Johnny Fisher, to feature on the undercard, and said that Australians Skye Nicolson and Jai Opetaia – who respectively fight Raven Chapman and Jack Massey on October 12 on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – could also yet fight.

“He would definitely go on that Australia card as well,” Hearn said of Fisher. “He’s actually got a really big following, him and his dad [John] in Australia, so he’d be on.

“Pending how Skye Nicolson gets on against Raven Chapman, she could be on that card as well. That would make sense. Justis Huni as well, likely to be on that card; maybe even Jai Opetaia, pending on how he gets on on October 12. It could be a massive card.”

HANEY-PARO TALKS BEGIN AFTER DAVIS OPTS OUT OF TITLE FIGHT

After Keyshawn Davis withdrew from negotiations for an October fight with Devin Haney, Liam Paro could swoop in for a WBO/IBF title unification later this year.

That's according to a midweek update in Paro's homeland, with Fox Sports Australia reporting the 30-year-old's promoters No Limit have begun talks with Haney.

Early suggestions are that it would take place on U.S. soil, meaning Paro (28-1, 16 KOs) would return Stateside for the first time since a sixth-round stoppage win over Montana Love in December 2023. That was the same Matchroom card headlined by Haney's 140-pound debut, outpointing Regis Prograis to win the WBC world title.

Now a three-division world champion, the 27-year-old has seen proposed fights with Rolando Romero and a 144-pound catchweight against Shakur Stevenson go cold this year, while the Davis back-and-forth has played out publicly in recent months.

The WBO ordered him to face Keyshawn in his first title defense, though the former WBO lightweight beltholder now sits No. 7 in the latest rankings update after withdrawing from contention following last week's purse bid.

Former titleholder Brian Norman (29-1, 23 KOs) is back to top spot, though Haney vehemently denied the possibility of an immediate rematch when the option was floated on social media.

Two-weight world champion Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) will face friendly rival Romero for his WBA belt at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena on August 22, while former IBF junior welterweight beltholder Richardson Hitchins (21-0, 8 KOs) and Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs) are the next two contenders for Haney's 147-pound title.

Hitchins is nursing a hand injury after his shutout win over Ricardo Salas on his Zuffa Boxing debut last month, while Pacquiao's handlers are monitoring the divisional landscape after a year-long absence.

The day after dethroning Lewis Crocker to become Australia's second two-weight world champion, Paro's trainer Angelo di Carlo said they were open to all comers.

No Limit chief George Rose hinted they were interested in luring Pacquiao back to Australia for a voluntary first defense, nine years after his world title defense against Jeff Horn at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium in July 2017.

"Liam showed the world that he's at the top of the tree in the 147-pound division. He can take anybody, all of those guys are available and we're interested in. There's no-one we'd say no to. I know the type of kid he is, he'll fight anybody," di Carlo said at the time, though things change quickly and a unification opportunity would trump that.

The possibility is sweetened knowing the WBO and IBF are on good terms as sanctioning bodies, given they're set for a five-day unified convention in December at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

WBO president Gustavo Olivieri's statement, back in May, described the December 9-13 gathering as a "landmark initiative reflecting institutional collaboration, global unity, and a shared commitment to the continued advancement of professional boxing."

WBO favorable to suggestion of Devin Haney-Liam Paro unification

Devin Haney should have no problem finding an opponent following last week’s rejection by former lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis.

WBO President Gustavo Olivieri told Boxing Scene Wednesday that his executive committee would look favorably upon potential requests by IBF welterweight champion Liam Paro and WBO 140lbs champion Shakur Stevenson to fight WBO welterweight champion Haney, 33-0 (15 KOs), next.

Australia’s Paro, 28-1 (16 KOs), is reportedly interested in a unification bout versus Haney following Paro’s unanimous-decision victory over England’s Lewis Crocker on June 24.

Boxing Scene has learned an official connected to Paro has made contact with the WBO about the potential request, and the sanctioning body is receptive to the idea, especially so considering the WBO and IBF will stage a joint convention in Florida this December.

As for unbeaten, four-division champion Stevenson, 25-0 (11 KOs), his previously reported interest in Haney would also be considered by the executive committee, but a recent post on Instagram by Stevenson seems to make that request unlikely.

“I won’t be entertaining the circus anymore… no more response from me ever again,” Stevenson posted.

After recently signing with Zuffa Boxing, Stevenson might be left to fight against Zuffa’s former WBA 140lbs champion Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela.

I heard that Paro backed out, and Catterall is now being seriously considered to Fill the spot/First choice of replacement opponent.

Stylistically that'd be the more interesting bout.

I hope it comes to Fruition.

I'd be only slightly favoring Haney vs Catterall and it most very likely winds up being Highly competitive throughout, whereas versus Paro it'd very likely wind up being a very dullishly lame bout with Haney winning 11 out of the 12 rounds, while continuously maintaining a very dullish Overly type of safety first approach.

With Haney-Catterall it's very likely going to be pretty similar to Haney-Lomachenko. :box:

Shakur Stevenson 'moving on,' Devin Haney bound for Liam Paro unification, officials say

Shakur Stevenson is “moving on” from negotiations with fellow unbeaten multi-division champion Devin Haney, an individual familiar with the negotiations told Boxing Scene Friday.

After targeting a November 28 bout in Atlanta and appearing in agreement on a 145lbs catchweight bout with no rehydration clause, the sides split late Thursday night.

One official monitoring the talks said Haney will move on to a welterweight unification bout against IBF champion Liam Paro at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Four-division champion Stevenson posted on “X” Thursday night that three-division titlist Haney “had his lawyer email and say that he would only fight at 147. Big waste of everybody’s time.”

Haney, the WBO welterweight champion, responded to WBO 140lbs champion Stevenson on “X,” writing, “You’re cap [lying]. I agreed to 145. [You] went missing for days. Tried to put a rehydration clause on me. I wasted six months negotiating with you … since I was gonna sign with Zuffa. Y’all did everything for this fight not to happen.”

A match between the under-30 pair was anticipated as a peak meeting of top-10 pound-for-pound American talents with the winner poised to declare himself the sport’s finest fighter.

After Haney father/manager/trainer Bill Haney told Boxing Scene that Stevenson was in hiding after they agreed to the 145lbs catchweight limit with no limit on Haney’s fight-day rehydration weight limit, an official close to the negotiation said the Haney side continued to “change the terms … they pulled out.”

Stevenson’s side “agreed to everything [the Haney side] wanted – 145, no rehydration clause and they agreed too – and then at the last minute they changed the weight to 147 last night,” one official said. “In my opinion, Devin is afraid of the fight and his father is a bullshit artist.”

After defeating three-division champion Teofimo Lopez on January 31 and then signing with the new Dana White/Nick Khan-headed Zuffa Boxing, Stevenson 25-0 (11 KOs) is left looking for a fight after previously failing to strike a deal with WBA champion Gary Antuanne Russell.

Another ideal option would be unbeaten recent IBF lightweight champion Raymond Muratalla, who is the WBO’s No. 1 140lbs contender and is coming off consecutive victories over Olympic gold medalists Andy Cruz and Robson Conceicao.

Stevenson won a 2016 Olympic silver medal and has claimed world titles from featherweight up to 140lbs.

Haney 33-0 (15 KOs) hasn’t fought since taking the belt November 22 against Brian Norman Jnr, but he has a hold on State Farm Arena November 28, and fighters including Norman and top-15 ranked Tiger Johnson are penciled in on separate support bouts, officials told Boxing Scene.

Sources: Haney, Paro agree to welterweight title unification

Devin Haney and Liam Paro have agreed to a welterweight title unification bout.

The Ring’s Mike Coppinger said on Thursday's episode of "Inside The Ring" that the two have reached a deal and the bout is expected to take place in the U.S. before the end of the year.

Haney (33-0, 15 KOs) holds the WBO title, and Paro is the IBF champion.

Haney, The Ring’s No. 1 welterweight and eighth pound-for-pound, hasn’t fought since beating Brian Norman by unanimous decision to become the WBO welterweight champion on November 22. The 27-year-old from Oakland became a three-division champion with the dominant decision victory over Norman (29-1, 23 KOs).

Haney had been in discussions to face The Ring and WBO 140-pound champion Shakur Stevenson. Those talks fell through, with the weight and a rehydration clause being among the issues that prevented it from coming to fruition.

Paro (28-1, 16 KOs), 30, became a two-division champion when he beat Lewis Crocker by unanimous decision on June 24. The Australian southpaw has won three straight fights since losing his IBF 140-pound title to Richardson Hitchins by split decision in December 2024.

Sources: Haney, Paro set for Dec. 19 title unification

Devin Haney will face Liam Paro in a WBO and IBF welterweight title unification fight on Dec. 19 in San Francisco at Chase Center, sources tell The Ring.

It'll be Haney's first fight under his exclusive multi-fight deal with DAZN.

Haney is a San Francisco native, and this isn't his first time headlining at the home of the Golden State Warriors. He beat Regis Prograis there by unanimous decision in December 2023 to win the WBC junior welterweight title.

Paro was on that card, too. He knocked down Montana Love twice and stopped him in the sixth round in the co-feature. The fight will be co-promoted by Devin Haney Promotions and Top Rank.

Haney (33-0, 15 KOs), The Ring's No. 1 welterweight and No. 8 pound-for-pound, hasn't fought since he dropped and outpointed Brian Norman in November. It was Haney's first fight at the 147-pound limit and answered plenty of questions.

Ryan Garcia knocked down Haney three times in their April 2024 fight. Haney lost by majority decision, and the result was changed to a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for ostarine.

Haney, who turns 28 next month, is a former undisputed lightweight champion. He beat George Kambosos twice in 2022 and Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2023.

The Paro bout comes together after Haney's talks with Ring and WBO 140-pound champion Shakur Stevenson fell apart. Weight and a rehydration clause were among the sticking points. Before that, the WBO ordered a purse bid for a mandatory defense against Keyshawn Davis, but he withdrew after rejecting the terms.

Paro (28-1, 16 KOs), a 30-year-old southpaw from Australia, won the IBF title on June 24 with a unanimous decision over Lewis Crocker in Brisbane. All three judges scored it 115-113. He joined Jeff Fenech as the only Australian-born fighters to win titles in two divisions. Dec. 19 also will be his first title defense.

The winner will hold two of the four welterweight titles. Garcia holds the WBC belt and Teofimo Lopez holds the WBA title, and they're working toward a unification bout targeted for Feb. 6.
