I spent the day in Clacton, here’s what voters there really think of Farage
©The i Paper
Nigel Farage will seek to steer the political agenda back to his safe space – immigration – after his polling numbers dropped significantly following revelations about his finances and his decision to trigger a by-election in his Clacton-on-Sea seat. The i Paper visited the Essex coastal town late last week, where some residents reported irritation that there was a by-election at all. However, loyal supporters of the Reform UK leader told this newspaper that he “speaks for Britain” and they plan to back him. In the absence of mainstream rivals to the Reform UK leader, over 30 candidates are standing, with his most high-profile opponent being the self-styled “intergalactic space warrior” Count Binface. Although some voters declared their loyalty to Farage, others said the circus had annoyed them and expressed frustration there are no alternatives other than novelty candidates or little-known independents. Others were unaware of an election taking place.

You know things are going horribly bad for Farage when Count Binface is considered the serious candidate running in the by-election.

Re: Reform Thread
We need a government that will stop wasting money on foreign aid or £100m bat tunnels, and instead build more jails, necessary for a much harsher justice system.

Re: Reform Thread
I don't think that foreign aid is a waste, I'm a huge supporter of it. That aside, it has been cut by roughly 40%.
The bat tunnel (which is a 20 minute walk from me) is another example of private companies ripping off the tax payer. I'm absolutely in favour of environmental protections, particularly protecting rare and endangered species - I don't want private companies to be able to tear up, pollute and destroy what they want in order to maximise profits. The eye-watering cost of the disastrous HS2 project is multi-faceted. We certainly did need to upgrade our infrastructure, but there was a definite optimism bias at play.
Farage, in character true to form, was strongly in favour of HS2 at the start. In fact, he even wanted three high speed lines, including London to Newcastle and London to Bristol. (With the trains painted with the British Flag). It was in the UKIP manifesto.
He opposed it when he saw how unpopular it was in Buckinghamshire. If he'd have started the project as he wanted to, it would have caused considerably more devastation to the country side and the costs would have dwarfed the current costs. And like the governments since, wouldn't have been able to back down politically. If you think it's bad now, it would've been considerably worse had Farage been in control.
The Tories, in 14 years, made 500 additional prison spaces. Labour, in 2 years, have increased capacity by around 3000.
Farrage's plan is to build Nightingale sites on MoD land to house prisoners. With many sites in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire being earmarked, he will be encountering and enraging the same people who he changed tack to support over HS2.
There's not a chance in hell those people will support prisons being built.
The expansion of HMP Grendon and Spring Hill will show us that.
Furthermore he's earmarked about £18bn for that - which is quite a bit, considering the plans to reduce government spending and revenue so drastically (with their 'saving' of £150bn forecast to actually cost an additional £30bn due to lost revenue), there's not anyone apart from the Reform party not scratching their heads and wondering what calculator they're using.
Farage is a very effective, populist lobbyist. He's at his strongest when he can flip positions and criticise a government, forcing them to adopt strategies and policies that take some of what he says into consideration.
As a leader of a country, in charge of it's finances? We'd be utterly fvcked.

Scottish police seek missing Commonwealth Games athletes
Police in Scotland say they have received reports that "several" athletes were unaccounted for following the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Ugandan sporting news website NBS Sport said four members of the nation's boxing squad had reportedly gone missing in Scotland and did not rejoin the rest of the delegation before the team's scheduled return to Uganda on Tuesday.
The Pakistan Today newspaper also reported a missing boxer from the Pakistan team.
"Police Scotland has received reports of several athletes who are unaccounted for. Enquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office," a Police Scotland spokesperson said.
There have been numerous cases of athletes seeking asylum following previous Commonwealth Games, including 2018 on the Gold Coast in Australia and in 2014 when hosted by Glasgow.
"We've welcomed nearly 3,000 athletes to the city from 74 nations. We want to deliver a safe and secure games, so we work really closely with Police Scotland, the Border Force, and UK visas and immigration to make sure everyone arrives and departs in line with regulation," Commonwealth Games CEO Phil Batty said.

Latest IPSOS polls have been a disaster for Farridge and Conform, Labour 28% Reform 25%, it represents a 5% gain for Labour and a 2% loss for Conform. who would make the best prime minister, Burnham 35% Farridge 15%.
Nobody cares! Nobody cares!

Hardly a disaster, 2 years out, Labour are in power, with a lot to do.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑10 Aug 2026, 12:31 Latest IPSOS polls have been a disaster for Farridge and Conform, Labour 28% Reform 25%, it represents a 5% gain for Labour and a 2% loss for Conform. who would make the best prime minister, Burnham 35% Farridge 15%.

Seems like a two horse race depending on how well Burnham does, this bounce will be short lived unless he gets stuck in.
The Tories aren't even in the conversation.
IMO it is all about the cost of living, not brown folk

Aye. All Reform has are half-baked ideas about reducing the number of brown people. The CoL would fvcking skyrocket with them in charge.Coco wrote: ↑10 Aug 2026, 13:10Hardly a disaster, 2 years out, Labour are in power, with a lot to do.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑10 Aug 2026, 12:31 Latest IPSOS polls have been a disaster for Farridge and Conform, Labour 28% Reform 25%, it represents a 5% gain for Labour and a 2% loss for Conform. who would make the best prime minister, Burnham 35% Farridge 15%.

Interestingly, the poll also includes people's choice on prime minister. Farage is less popular than Reform, whilst Burnham is more popular than Labour.
It's not a good sign for Reform. When they were polling high, they were getting all sorts of ex-Tory donors bank rolling them. The rich had jumped ship. When that ship starts to sink, they'll jump straight back to the Tories.
The announcements from Reform at the minute are ludicrous soundbites. I'm not sure many outside of the absolute fan base would be fooled in the slightest.

They are acting like cry baby, snow flake fannies too, Tice saying he's being treated worse than a pedo becuase get this, the BBC did a vox pop in his constituency seeing what peolle felt about all the financial scandal surrounding the party and Farridge keeps comparing himself to a war criminal becuase the media has the audacity to keep asking him about the £5m bung.
They really don't like being held to account which is bound to happen once you are close to the doors of power.

They've never had it, have they? Farage has had his bollocks stroked by the media for 20 odd years. As soon as a journalist does some actual journalism, they cry like fvcking children.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑10 Aug 2026, 15:36 They are acting like cry baby, snow flake fannies too, Tice saying he's being treated worse than a pedo becuase get this, the BBC did a vox pop in his constituency seeing what peolle felt about all the financial scandal surrounding the party and Farridge keeps comparing himself to a war criminal becuase the media has the audacity to keep asking him about the £5m bung.

The 'anti-establishment', privately educated, former banker and current unelected beaurocrat, Zia Yusuf, who works for the party funded by billionaires, full of millionaires and ex members of the Tory government...
That guy.....
He's come under fire for calling Ben Wallace, former Secretary of State for Defence and former Captain in the British Army, mentioned in Despatches for Gallantry during service in NI (he was also a member of the party tasked with bringing back Princess Diana's body), a 'Traitor to Britain'.
Now, I don't care much for Wallace's political affiliations, but to call the man a traitor to Britain is pretty disgraceful.

Even Farridge said he'll give him a jolly good ticking off, i don't really understand why Yusuf is in that party, the vast majority of Reform voters wouldn't want him living next door to them.Lenny Cravats wrote: ↑11 Aug 2026, 14:01 The 'anti-establishment', privately educated, former banker and current unelected beaurocrat, Zia Yusuf, who works for the party funded by billionaires, full of millionaires and ex members of the Tory government...
