Danny Swift (2012/13) v Josh Taylor (2019/21)

Post by Taansend »

These are two fighters who had a great couple of years at Light Welter, winning some really good fights before falling off a cliff.

In Swifts case he just stopped fighting really good opposition after Matthysse for a couple of years & then lost his edge whereas Taylor just went downhill quick after Ramirez and lost his last four (yes he did).

So, who would win if they met at their respective primes?

That's an excellent match-up, actually.

If we take them at their absolute best - I'd take Taylor on points.

Interestingly, I actually think DSG is a more durable of the two (in terms of chin, skin).

But in terms of styles - a tall, mobile, versatile southpaw would've been a massive struggle for Danny.

That said, Taylor would need to fight with his brains rather than with his heart here.

In-and-out boxing and keep DSG turning - that would be a recipe for success.

The "balls to the walls" approach would be giving Danny some nice countering opportunities.

These are 2 guys that always seemed to be better than I thought they were when it came to the big fights. Danny Garcia seemed better than I thought he was more often than Josh Taylor.

I gotta favor Garcia in this matchup. It'd be close though because Taylor is going to be busier, but Garcia is going to be getting in cleaner, more eye catching hits as he tended to do often in fights.

I feel like Garcia showed more consistency at the top level than Taylor did even though Taylor picked up more titles for a brief period.

Garcia's best wins are better than Taylor best wins, in my humble opinion.

In fact, Garcias losses are better than Taylors losses.

His losses are definitely better. He was only ever beaten by highly ranked fighters or Champions and he was always competitive.
