Richard Torrez eyes return by year's end after KO loss

By the time Richard Torrez realized what hit him, it was too late.

The 27-year-old last fought on May 23 in a step-up against Frank Sanchez but was flatlined in the second round of their clash in Egypt.

Torrez hasn't said much since, but he's working hard to make a comeback by the end of the year.

Torrez wants to move past the worst night of his career. Had he won that IBF final eliminator, he would be next in line for a title shot. Sanchez is enjoying that position as he waits on the winner of Moses Itauma vs. Filip Hrgovic for the vacant heavyweight crown.

Torrez (14-1, 12 KOs) believes he’ll get his shot on the big stage again. But for now, he’s taking this defeat on the chin.

“A lot of things went wrong,” he said. “But I don’t wanna talk too much because if I start talking about what went wrong, people are gonna say I’m trying to make excuses. I just lost. I understand what I did wrong and I can fix it.

I like Torrez’s attitude here. Getting stopped like that is a brutal setback, especially when he was one win away from a title shot, but at 27 there’s still plenty of time to rebuild.

The key is not rushing back just to erase the loss. Sanchez exposed some things that need correcting, and Torrez seems to understand that. The credit to Reynoso is also refreshing—rather than making excuses, he’s acknowledging that he got out-read and caught.

If he comes back by the end of the year, I’d rather see a sensible comeback opponent than another immediate step-up. Get a few rounds, rebuild the confidence, and then start testing those adjustments.

I've been hoping we'd get a serious Heavyweight from the USA for a few years now. I thought maybe Jared Anderson but No, then I thought maybe Torrez but also No.

Maybe this will help him as opponents will be looking to ko him now & can work the counters but it's going to be a difficult road back.

If he wants to be a top level heavyweight 'he should not really be taking loses like that so early in his career. In fact? This should be his peak in terms of pure raw ability. And he was not even competitive vs. Frank Sanchez'.

Anthony Joshua lost early in his career 'but you could see that even on his worst night vs. Andy Ruiz Junior I he was competitive. And his dominant win in the rematch displayed overall that he was the better fighter'.

Note: Most American fights since the retirement of Evander Holyfield 'just seem to have terrible work ethic and staying power. Deontay Wilder has been the exception, although some of his training methods I have been critical over throughout the years'.

If Richard Torrez when the wheels are falling can just keep training 'and dedicated 1000% to the sport. Then maybe in the future he can at the very least challenge for a title' etc.

I'm a huge Torrez fan and while it's unlikely that he's going reach the very top, there's no reason he can't be in some great fights. Would love to see him in with Wardley.
