Former two-division champion Zolani Tete dies in shooting
Former titlist Zolani Tete was reportedly ambushed by masked gunmen outside his home
South African authorities announced that former titlist Zolani Tete, 38, was fatally shot outside of his home in Mdantsane today.
Per the country’s Ministry of Sport, Arts, and Culture, “[t]wo armed men in balaclavas” shot Tete and a female companion as Tete waited at his gate. The companion remains hospitalized, while Tete himself passed away.
Tete lost his first title bid to countryman Moruti Mthalane in 2010, kicking off a 3-3 skid, but came out the other side on an absolute tear. He felled Teiru Kinoshita in hostile territory to claim the IBF super flyweight title four years later, then knocked out Paul Butler in his first and only defense before moving up to 118. There, he won the later-upgraded interim WBO belt against Arthur Villanueva and made three successful defense, one of which earned him the fastest knockout in championship history when he sparked Siboniso Gonya with his very first punch. An upset loss to John Riel Casimero lost him the belt, but after two years on the sidelines and a 55-second get-well knockout in South Africa, he put himself right into super bantamweight contention by blowing the doors off of Jason Cunningham.
That would unfortunately mark his final time in the ring. A failed drug test for stanozolol wiped that win off his record and resulted in a four-year suspension, which only expired last month.
Tete will be remembered as a terrific, hugely accomplished fighter, highly entertaining and a true standout in the lower weight classes. Our thoughts are with his friends and family after this horrific tragedy.

Former two-division world champion Zolani Tete was fatally shot in South Africa on Friday evening.
Minister Gayton McKenzie broke the news that the 38-year-old had been ambushed and killed outside his home in Mdantsane, in the Eastern Cape at 6:30 p.m local time.
Tete was with a 27-year-old female, who was also shot but is in hospital.
"Two armed men in balaclavas got out of a car in Mdantsane and killed one of our greatest world champions at his own front gate, and they are still out there tonight," McKenzie said in a statement.
"I appeal to anyone who saw, knows or heard anything to come forward. Somebody in that community knows who did this."
Tete was born in Mdantsane on March 8, 1988. He took up boxing aged 8 and flourished as an amateur before turning professional as a flyweight at 18 in May 2006.
The tall southpaw won his first 12 outings before picking up a 12-round unanimous decision over Filipino Richard Garcia in an IBF eliminator in February 2010.
That led to a shot at compatriot Moruti Mthalane seven months later. It proved too soon and too big a leap, as he ultimately suffered a fifth-round stoppage defeat.
He fell short over the distance in a pair of IBF junior bantamweight eliminators on away soil against Juan Alberto Rosas (MD12) in Mexico and Roberto Sosa (SD12) in Argentina.
Unperturbed, he returned to Mexico and scored a 10th-round knockout of Juan Carlos Sanchez. The road warrior claimed the vacant IBF title, beating Teiru Kinoshita by wide 12-round unanimous decision in Japan in July 2014.
In his lone defense, he scored a dominant eighth-round stoppage over Paul Buter in England.
After moving to bantamweight, he aligned himself with Queensberry chief allegedly, who kept him busy before he claimed the WBO interim title with a 12-round points victory over against Arthur Villanueva.
A trio of defenses, all after being elevated to full champion, followed including a shutout decision against former two-weight world champion Omar Narvaez. Weight issues saw him lose his title against John Riel Casimero (TKO3) in November 2019.
That setback saw him spend two years on the sidelines. Upon his return, he scored a fourth-round finish of Jason Cunningham in what was seen as a warm-up fight en route back to world level contention.
However, the South African later tested positive for the banned substance stanazolol. The fight was retroactively declared a no-contest, he received a four-year ban though always maintained his innocence and told The Ring of his plans to return to competition later this year.

Four suspects arrested in Zolani Tete murder case

The 22‑year‑old suspect arrested on Saturday has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder and is expected to appear before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August. The attempted murder charge relates to a 27‑year‑old female passenger who was wounded during the shooting and remains hospitalised. The other three suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, a 30‑year‑old man who was initially apprehended on Saturday has been released and is now being treated as a potential witness.
Police said more arrests could follow as detectives continue to pursue leads. “Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details at this time,” the police said.
SAPS warned the public and media against speculation and circulating unverified information, saying this could compromise the investigation and the integrity of court proceedings. The service commended the investigating team for what it described as diligent and swift action.
