Berchelt returns Aug. 29, keen to show plenty left in the tank

Former WBC junior lightweight titleholder Miguel Berchelt is set to return against Juan Manuel Cordoba on August 29.

The Coliseo Promotions event, part of the "Noche Suprema" series, will be streamed live on YouTube.

The 34-year-old, entering his 16th year as a professional, will face his Colombian opponent in his adopted hometown of Hermosillo at Centro de Usos Multiples.

"I am very motivated to fight in Hermosillo, my hometown for the last 15 years," Berchelt (42-3, 37 KOs) told The Ring. "I want to show all my fans that there is [more] 'Alacran' Berchelt [to come] for many years."

Berchelt recovered from a shocking early defeat to score a 11th-round knockout win over Francisco Vargas in January 2017, after which the big-punching Mexican reeled off six championship defenses.

Among them, he outpointed former titlist Takashi Miura while earning stoppages of Miguel Ramos (TKO9), Vargas in a rematch (RTD6) and Jason Sosa (KO4).

However, he lost by 10th-round knockout by Oscar Valdez in February 2021 and was unexpectedly stopped inside the distance up at lightweight against Jeremia Nakathila (RTD6) the following January. Since then, he is riding a four-fight win streak with all of those coming back home in Mexico.

Cordoba (7-1, 4 KOs) has endured spells of inactivity while operating outside his natural weight class. Naturally bigger, he last scored a second-round knockout in May at 144 pounds.

I really enjoyed Berchelt when he was coming up and as a beltholder but the Valdez beating ruined him and he's looked shot the past five years.

I read earlier today that the entire card was cancelled after armed men broke into the building where the fights were to be held and lit the ring on fire Friday night.

According to Sonora's State Security Council, a group entered the Centro de Usos Múltiples around 8:30 p.m. Friday, firing weapons and setting the boxing ring on fire.

Authorities confirmed no injuries resulted from the incident. Moreover, officials said the attack specifically targeted the event's production and organization, not the general public or the venue's other facilities.

The council suspended the event afterward. It cited the promoter's failure to guarantee adequate security measures despite holding proper civil protection permits.
