Shoving a mic between fighters during the face off

Does DAZN ever miss an opportunity to lower the bar?

I first noticed this after the Hrg Moses weigh in. Some member of crew looking like an utter bell end shoving a mic between the fighters during the face off so we can hear what they're saying to each other, as if we didn't already know. I assumed it was some overexcited junior who'd broken protocol and as a result was live broadcasting F words to a pre-watershed audience. He's getting shit canned, I thought.

Turns out it wasn't some rogue junior. This is another stroke of genius from DAZN. Today, during the Dubois Wardley face off, the same weedy, intrusive little arm pokes the mic between them so we can listen to their horrific, cringe-inducing dialogue.

Brothers, I ask you: Was the face off not better when the back and forth was left to the imagination? Isn't there something inherently more compelling about watching two fighters square up without having a mic shoved between them to capture every playground insult? And aesthetically, does it not look utterly ridiculous?

Hunter Thompson predicted that boxing would one day merge with professional wrestling, and with the manufactured feuds & storylines, the hysterical overselling of everything, the silly overblown ring walks and costumes and now the increasingly desperate attempts to capture every bit of supposedly menacing dialogue at the face off, we seem well on the way. I'm increasingly embarrassed to be a boxing fan.

Yh they started doing it more recently than ever.

The most common thing I’ve noticed said between fighters during these face offs is ‘we’ll see.’ One of them will make a prediction or revelation that just stops the other guy briefly in his tracks and they just resort to ‘we’ll see.’

The face-off is for the public. It's part of the promotion, with cameras six inches from their faces, so I don't really see how putting a mic there suddenly crosses some sacred line.

Most of what they say is hardly profound or even worth hearing, but there's nothing particularly embarrassing about capturing it either. If anything, pretending the stare-down is some private, mystical moment that should be left to the imagination is giving it far more importance than it deserves.

My biggest issue is that the microphone isn't there from the beginning but only comes in after they start talking. I want to hear them breathing too.
