Military procurement should be done by the military and not politicians, the Navy has wanted CATOBAR carriers for years. If we had Ark Royal with its Buccaneers and Phantoms during the Falklands we'd have pissed it.

My point is aircraft carriers are going the way of the battleship, warfare. is changing, now i know they were originally ordered under Blair or at least the first 1 was and. hindsight is always 20/20 and. all that but you'd like to think we have military experts with a bit of foresight, when i was a young lad back in the 80's i used to love making model airplanes and. i used to get this magazine called Aircraft, i remember the mag doing a big thing about the Eurofighter which was in the pipeline back then, not yet in service and the. magazine predicted the Eurofighter wouldl be the last jet used by the RAF that had a human pilot, this was like 1983 or something. Even back then in the days of ZX81's, BBC Micro's and Commodore 64's people could see the general direction of travel, if reports are to be believed never mind the Iranians the. yank Navy had. to retreat from the Yemeni's and. the yank Navy is the most powerful Navy on earth, drones are rewriting the rules of warfare and we threw the best part of 8 billion quid on 2 carriers which are rapidly approaching white elephant status.

A mobile air base will always have a place in warfare, our carriers were also designed for drone operations which have been tested fairly recently, they also designed to be configured as "commando carriers" as well. France, USA, India and China are all building new "supercarriers", Japan and South Korea are converting helicopter carriers into fixed wing carriers, Turkey have built drone carriers which can operate manned aircraft too, the Iranians have converted cargo ships into drone carriers.
People often go on about things being obsolete until they aren't, years ago the nuclear submarine made the conventional subs obsolete, now the modern conventional subs are even stealthier than the nukes. The helicopter gunship was considered a game changer vs tanks, modern tanks are now better armoured and have better defenses against aerial attack. The best Close Air Support aircraft in the world is still the A-10 Warthog, a plane that ceased production over 40 years ago, in fact the USAF paused its retirement because it's unconvinced that the F-35 can do a better job. Lastly there will always be a place on the battlefield for infantry with rifles and machine guns.

I think a. lot of. countries will be reviewing wether they want those carriers now given this Iran thing, if a US. carrier group has. to stay hundreds if not thousands of miles away from the action what chance has anyone else got. This is one of. those periods in time like WW1. where the rules of warfare are ripped up, in 1914 you had calvarly on horseback by 1918 you had tanks and aircraft. My dads. grandad who was in the royal artilerry basically lost a leg on the somme when his horse. was killed and fell on him.

Its not just drones though mate. its all. these hypersonic missiles and stuff. The yanks are. by far the most powerful military in the world but. they have. basically. lost all their. bases around Iran. Warfare going in this new direction may not neccessarily be the worst thing, in the world you'd like. to think if the future involves robots fighting it out less. human beings will be losing their lives and you'd think we'd. be amongst the top handful of countries in terms of producing top scientists.
