I'm pleased, mainly because it would become a monetarised industry where people would be encouraged to do so as they are a burden.

Saying that with ever increasing population, I'm sure it will happen unless A1 starts killing folk first

Pathetic as usual from the UK. Bin off the Lords and bin off religion whilst we’re there, get into the 21st century for once.

If people are set on ending it, they're going to do it.

It’s not assisted murder. It’s people who are terminally ill checking out on their own terms.

I'm no fan of the Lords but. hats off to them, this bill was a disaster waiting to happen, these. things are always the thin end of the wedge and particularly dangerous when you've got a generation of elderly homeowners and at the same time a generation of young people who have little to no hope of affording their own home.

People should be allowed to make their own choices, ffs. Dogs get treated better than people when they’ve had enough suffering. Why anyone would vote against people actively making their own decisions is just beyond me.

For me it's a tough one, i watched my mum gasp for breath for hours and i would have pressed the euthanasia button myself if i coukd have. That said it's bound to be exploited by bad people and bad companies.

So terminally ill people are expected to die horribly even though we have the means to have them pass peacefully?

I swear some people think terminally ill people just fall asleep and pass away when it can actually be horrific like something out of a horror film.

My mum wasnt terminaly ill in the official. sense but she may as well have been, she was bedridden for years before she died and had all sorts of illnesses and. things wrong with her it was dreadful. It's. just like Roy says though you can easily see where this thing could. end up in a. decade or so especially with AI being increasingly used in the decision making process, from. what i've. seen rights groups advocating on behalf of old people are largely against this as well which i think is telling. it's one of those tough one's though where there's valid arguments on either side of the debate and no real. right or wrong answers. I just think in situations like this where they could open up pandora's box if they are not careful erring on the side of caution as it were is probably the right thing to do.

Old people who aren't going to get better are clogging up our hospitals, costing us a fortune, depriving our children of this money.

A1 will do the maths and confirm that an accelerated culling programme is prudent

Sadly I really think there is a big class element in this. Middle class people with the resources available to them will be able to make the optimal decision. The working class will be pressured / feel pressured, by the state / by their situation, into making sub optimal decisions.

Where a life is at stake should we benefit the middle class at the expense of the working class ?

I see all "the luvvies" are up in arms which alone suggests to me the vote went the right way.

Personally I am in favour of it but with much more restrictions than were contained in the bill. I think it should be like a donor card, ie if you didn't take out a euthanasia card before you were a certain age then you can't be liquidated.

The middle class will be able to pop over to a more humane and forward-looking country in Europe which allows euthanasia. It’s our working class who’ll be stuck in the UK, dying in absolute agony.

The fact that a handful of middle class people are able to go to Switzerland each year doesn't justify the mass slaughter of the working class.

I can't see why it's not available to terminally ill people, the terminally ill ARE going to die, surely they should be able to die with some dignity instead of agony with blood pouring out of every orifice.

Yeah but we need to treat the British public like idiots or children. Can’t trust them to make their own decisions, can we.

We just go. back to the status. quo mate dont we the way its been for a very long time, there. were no calls for this back in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's none that i can remember anyway and unless. i'm mistaken the likes of age concern etc are very much against it.
It is one of those tricky ones though but when it comes to matters of life and death surely its. best to err on the side. of caution, we all only get one life. and in cosmos/universe terms 80-100 years is a blink of an eye, [and thats if we are lucky, my mum died. at 66] once we are gone we aint coming back either even if this planet keeps on spinning for the next 5 billion years we are not coming back. What happens if someone tops. themselves and AI finds a. cure the next day, there are going to be so. many advances in medicine. over the next 20 years this is arguably the least appropriate time in history to bring it in. At least lets see what Ai can do first and then maybe review it in 20 years time or something.
I do get what you are saying BB but this is. one of those situations where errors are pretty much irreversable.

In those. cases i think there's pretty much an unwritten rule that doctors help people on their way which is probably why shipman got away with it for so long.

I cannot predict the future, and neither can anyone else for that matter. But what I do know, TODAY, is that I would hate to become a burden to the people I love... and I would hate even more to be condemned to a prolonged, agonising death with no hope of recovery.

Yeah, I've voted in favor of Assisted Suicide when it came up for state referendum. I'm for it and the death penalty. I don't believe in life at all costs which is one of the reasons I don't ID as Catholic anymore.

Certainly, both these very controversial practices have downsides, but I'll take the downsides rather than have sadistic murderers and rapists enjoying macaroni in jail, or a suffering grandparent who is a financial and psychological burden.

If I want to commit suicide, I'll do it myself, it's not complicated.

Just imagine government backed suicide being outsourced to reduce waiting times

It’s more likely in the US they would outsource it to a private mega-insurance company that would annoy you enough that you’d kill yourself from frustration so they wouldn’t have to pay for it
