Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis II - Who wins a rematch?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

'Let's rumble' Ryan Garcia tells Gervonta Davis following approach for rematch

Ryan Garcia claims that old rival Gervonta “Tank” Davis has formally contacted him about a rematch.

Garcia blew away Conor Benn on September 12 to retain his WBC welterweight title in a high-profile thrashing in Las Vegas.

The victory, though it came against an opponent who had not fought at 147lbs for more than four years, appears to have confirmed Garcia’s place at the sport’s top table.

Davis found himself in the same position back in 2023 when he knocked out Garcia but a series of legal issues – specifically a civil lawsuit being brought against him by his ex-partner, and a surprise draw with Lamont Roach in his most recent outing in March 2025, have seen the lightweight’s star fade and his career stall.

The loss to “Tank” has long wrangled Garcia. The bout was set at a catchweight of 136lbs with a rehydration clause – no more than 10lbs could be gained after the weigh-in – that Garcia claims left him weakened. A body shot dropped him for the count in the seventh round.

Garcia has now fought up at 147lbs for his last three bouts and, after crushing Benn, he voiced his desire to take on WBA beltholder Teofimo Lopez in a unification battle next May.

But Davis, 30-0-1 (28 KOs), also got a mention from the welterweight titlist, triggering “Tank” to post on social media the sequel could happen – but only at 140lbs.

On Tuesday, Garcia inferred it had developed into a formal approach from Davis’ team.

"I can confirm Gervonta and Al [Haymon] have contacted my team," Garcia wrote on social media Tuesday.

"147 or nothing. And I want him to get a tune-up fight and be at his best when we fight.

"He has some stuff to handle, but we, for sure, are going to get it going on.

"Let's rumble."

Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis rekindle rematch talks

Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis have rekindled conversations for a rematch nearly three and a half years after their blockbuster bout ended with "Tank" scoring a seventh-round knockout win courtesy of a body shot.

Garcia (26-2, 21 KOs), now the WBC welterweight champion, has a world of options that await following his second-round stoppage win against Conor Benn on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Chief among them are fellow 147-pound titleholders Devin Haney (WBO) and Teofimo Lopez (WBA), The Ring and WBO 140-pound champion Shakur Stevenson, a dark-horse candidate in the retired Terence Crawford and Davis, a long-reigning lynchpin at 135 pounds.

"Gervonta is cool, but he doesn't want the smoke," Garcia wrote on X. "What’s up with you? I went to 136 pounds [with a 10-pound rehydration clause], you [can] come to 147 — don’t be shaky now. I need that if you want it. If not, there’s nothing to be said."

Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) responded on what appears to be his recently created X account, @MoneyTwoFly, and reshared the message from his verified Instagram account: "No lie for you I’ll do 144 … word say it’s a bet! And I’ll get this s*** I’m going through out the way! Just give the word! … Already talked to [promoter] Al [Haymon]."

Davis has fought only once above 135.5 pounds, and it came in 2021 during an 11th-round stoppage win against Mario Barrios at the junior welterweight limit.

Garcia later responded: "I can confirm Gervonta and Al have contacted my team. — 147 or nothing. And I want Gervonta to get a tune-up fight and be at his best when we fight. He has some stuff to handle, but we are for sure going to get it going on. Let's rumble."

The suggested sequel sent shockwaves across social media, which prompted Garcia's attorney and advisor, Guadalupe Valencia, to respond.

"Ryan is the best welterweight in the world; it's not debatable," Valencia told The Ring. "He is now the new face of boxing as well. We believe that one of the biggest fights that can be made in 2027 is Ryan Garcia against Gervonta Davis. As the champ, Ryan calls the shots, so it must be at 147 pounds — period.

"Ryan has plenty of options, and it's not just Davis. Everyone wants to be in the ring with Ryan. We plan on being right back into a fight and announcing Ryan's next fight shortly. We want to keep this great energy going and give the fans what they want, which is exciting and explosive fights."

When Garcia and Davis squared off on April 22, 2023, their fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas generated approximately 1.2 million pay-per-view buys on Showtime and $22.8 million in ticket revenue.

However, Davis has fought just twice ever since: an eighth-round knockout win against Frank Martin in June 2024 and a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach in March 2025. Davis, who'll turn 32 in November, was supposed to face Jake Paul on November 14 of last year, but the bout was scrapped once he faced allegations of domestic violence.

Garcia, meanwhile, has finally found some momentum as he navigates through the prime stage of his career at 28. Before blasting Benn over the weekend, Garcia also beat Barrios in February for this crown.

"Now that the adrenaline has cleared and I can really assess the moment, let's go — I freaking did that," Garcia said in between his messages to Davis.

"I know it’s hard to admit for some people, I just got hands, and my boxing is much better than the credit I receive from some of my peers and analysts. But that’s part of the game.

"If anyone I addressed this past weekend thinks I have anger toward them, I don’t. I’m just competitive, and it was my moment, and it was smoke for everyone.

"The support was amazing — 18,000 people in the arena, $8 million gate … I can’t wait to step into the ring again."

Not the rematch that Garcia should be looking for and it would be an uninspiring fight choice (again) for Tank.

The biggest and most meaningful rematch for Ryan Garcia is vs. Devin Haney II 'and this time around, the fight needs to be a fair and equal match up during preparation'.

Note: I would rather see Gervonta "Tank" Davis fight Vasiliy Lomachenko in a return fight 'but it may be difficult for him to return to championship form after his recent trials and tribulations outside of the ring'.

I think the time is now for both Davis and Lomachenko to fight each other 'In my opinion that is the biggest fight that can be made below 140 pounds in the sport of boxing' etc.

Garcia Vs Haney II
Tank Vs Shakur
agreed. Tank vs Shakur would be one of my top fights to see, along with Beterbiev vs Benevidez/Opetaia.

If Tank is back to his near best he should beat Garcia but they're different sizes. 147 is a lot for Tank and he'd be like post-prison Tyson, the magic probably gone

Nowhere in boxing history, has a rematch been referred to as a return fight 'whether this be on a poster or during a advert' etc.

Garcia has the keys to Haney’s rollerskates. Haney may be the better overall boxer, but he couldn’t get through Ryan on Ryan’s worst day.

Ryan's worst day? They fought when Ryan was juiced to the gills, didn't fully cut weight and had never looked that good before.

I find it so strange how people just ignore that fact.

There’s a lot of hate for Haney, I don’t know where most of it comes from.

It was the best Garcia had looked and many of us were shocked. Not many of us were shocked when he failed the drug test.

Not true. A return has often been used to suggest a rematch

The most universally accepted and correct way to promote a second fight between two fighters 'is by promoting it as a rematch. Not a return fight or anything else'.

Note: Nevertheless Gervonta "Tank" Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko is the best fight in boxing below 140 pounds 'and one of the biggest fights that can be made in the sport currently right now'.

Lomchenko is a great fighter has many solid wins, but he has never really been involved in a mega fight 'it would be the biggest fight and stage he has competed in during his entire career outside of the Olympics' etc.

Thanks ChatGPT 🤣 but when people talk of a return match it absolutely implies that he same match up has previously occurred.

I can't imagine Garcia would go down to 140 considering he's got a belt at 147. I'd think if the fight were to happen Tank would jump for the opportunity to win Garcia's belt.
