Frank Martin vs. Bryan Flores in the works for October

After signing a promotional deal with Top Rank last month, Frank Martin is wasting little time tapping into the momentum to land his next matchup.

A matchup between Martin (19-1-1, 13 KOs) and Bryan Flores (29-1-1, 16 KOs) is in the works for early October, the junior welterweight contender told The Ring.

"The Ghost" Martin, a 31-year-old from Indianapolis, last fought to a unanimous draw against Nahir Albright in February. In December, Martin viciously stopped Rances Barthelemy in four rounds in his first fight since getting knocked out by Gervonta Davis in June 2024.

"Nino Maravilla" Flores, a 30-year-old Mexican based in Las Vegas, is riding a three-fight winning streak since suffering the lone loss of his career against Lindolfo Delgado via split decision in August 2024. Flores has reputable wins this year against Starling Castillo and Jonathan Navarro.

Martin envisions a win against Flores can set him up for a fight against Delgado in 2027. Martin is assuming Delgado, the No. 1 contender for the vacant IBF 140-pound title, will become a champion sometime this year whenever he gets the chance to fight for the belt.

"A lot of people call out my name thinking I'm a fool, but I am going to be sticking with the plan that I have," Martin told The Ring. "I want to be fighting for a title by next year. We are eyeing and aiming for Lindolfo Delgado, if that fight presents itself."

Zaina is listed as being based in Birmingham UK but I thought he fought out of Tijuana.

I don't actually see any connection to the UK.

Martin rebuilds team, stays active on Navarrete-Foster undercard

Junior welterweight contender Frank Martin has a name cachet.

He just wasn't getting the opportunities to cash in on it.

So Martin rebuilt the team around him. The 31-year-old from Indianapolis is no longer tied to Errol Spence as a promoter fighting on Premier Boxing Champions cards.

Instead, Martin (19-1-1, 13 KOs) signed a promotional deal with Top Rank in July and a managerial deal with Fighters First Management in June. Martin's moves followed a split from longtime trainer Derrick James last year.

"The Ghost" has been coached by Buddy McGirt over his last two fights, a brutal knockout win against Rances Barthelemy in December and a unanimous draw against Nahir Albright last time out in February.

Martin is now gearing up for his third fight in 10 months as he faces Tarik Zaina (18-3-1, 12 KOs) in a 10-round fight Saturday on the undercard of the junior lightweight title unification clash between Emanuel Navarrete and O'Shaquie Foster at Frost Bank Arena in San Antonio on DAZN. (8 p.m. ET; 1 a.m. BST)

"I signed with Top Rank because they are going to give me the activity that I want and need," Martin told The Ring. "The fans want to see me fight more. A lot of times they think fighters don't want to fight. Naw, it ain't that.

"The more active a fighter is, the more you'll get out of him. Fighting once a year doesn't help a fighter. The more active you are, the sharper and fresher you are."

Fighting twice over 10 weeks against Barthelemy and Albright was exactly what Martin needed after sitting on the sidelines for an extended period following his eighth-round knockout loss against Gervonta Davis in June 2024.

Martin said the recently retired Spence supported his desire to maneuver his career as needed.

"EJ was supportive of the decision I made. I told him that I wanted to do something different, and he wished me the best," Martin said.

"And now, Buddy is bringing my slick side back out. Derrick's training style was great, but I felt like it took away a bit of my athleticism. I can train and fight any style that I am coached in. With Buddy, it's a blend of everything, offensively and defensively."

For his fight against Zaina, Martin is facing a well-traveled opponent without a signature win in his six-year career. Zaina is a 31-year-old Moroccan based in the UK who's built his record against obscure opposition across Mexico, Colombia, Pakistan, and Gibraltar. When Zaina stepped up against top competition in the United States, he lost a pair of eight-round unanimous decisions against Delante "Tiger" Johnson and Rohan Polanco in 2024.

With a win against Zaina, Martin is zeroing in on a more solid standing in the division and an eventual shot at the IBF belt, which will be up for grabs on October 31 when Lindolfo Delgado and Arthur Biyarslanov square off for the vacant title.

"Getting that belt will give me better leverage," Martin said. "I'm with it for any big names after that. That's the path that I want to go on right now."

Frank Martin scores 7th-round stoppage of Zaina

Frank Martin and Tarik Zaina were familiar foes.

Their paths crossed thrice in sparring sessions throughout the years, and on Saturday, they finally met in a sanctioned fight.

Martin was doing more than enough to score a decision through the first six rounds and ultimately zapped Zaina in the seventh of their junior welterweight fight scheduled for 10.

After a workmanlike 18 minutes, Martin finally caught Zaina with an incredible left hand that rattled him in the seventh, followed by a procedural right hand that dropped him. Zaina's legs were out, but he got back up, only to endure a flurry that forced referee Angel Ramos to stop the fight at 2:38.

"The Camel" Zaina (18-4-1, 12 KOs) was in no way haunted by "The Ghost" Martin (20-1-1, 14 KOs) in the early going, but it was the more comfortable Martin who connected with the cleaner shots in a competitive clash.

Combinations were few and far between, and the craftier Martin outboxed the forward-marching Zaina off his back foot in a fight that was originally more difficult than most thought it would be.

"I got the stoppage, that's the main thing," Martin said during his post-fight remarks. "I came in and got what I wanted. It took me a little while to get going, but we got it done."

CompuBox credited Martin with landing 86 of 310 punches and Zaina with connecting on 51 of 241.

Martin, with a new team in tow, returned to the win column after fighting to a unanimous draw against Nahir Albright in February. Before that, he viciously knocked out Rances Barthelemy in December and was on the wrong side of a knockout loss himself during a lightweight title shot against Gervonta Davis in June 2024.

While Martin came into the clash as a known commodity, Zaina walked into the matchup as an international man of mystery.

Zaina is a 31-year-old Moroccan fighting out of Tijuana who built his record against obscure opposition across Mexico, Colombia, Pakistan, and Gibraltar. He's now fallen short each time he's stepped up in competition. Zaina also lost by eight-round unanimous decisions against Delante "Tiger" Johnson and Rohan Polanco in 2024.

Martin-Zaina took place on the undercard of the junior lightweight title unification bout between O'Shaquie Foster and Emanuel Navarrete at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas as part of a Top Rank Boxing show on DAZN.

'Scooter' Davis rides past Faccio

Lightweight prospect Deric "Scooter" Davis passed another checkpoint in his ascending career by scoring a shutout eight-round unanimous decision against Joaquin Silva Faccio.

Davis (12-0, 10 KOs), a 24-year-old Fort Washington, Maryland native, leaned on a solid north and south attack and was awarded scores of 80-72 across the board against the gritty 22-year-old Uruguayan (10-1, 4 KOs).

CompuBox credited Davis with landing 168 of 399 of his punches – 69 to the body – while Faccio connected with 61 of 367.

The win was the third consecutive eight-round decision for Davis, who is still developing and coached by Barry Hunter. He kickstarted his career with 10 consecutive KOs in a total of 16 rounds.
