Report: Principality Stadium back in play for Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury

Staging the Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury heavyweight bout in the U.K. remains “absolutely” in play, Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn told BS Thursday following a report specifying such a scenario.

Veteran boxing writer Dan Rafael of Fight Freaks Unite! cited sources reporting that Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, is being proposed for the matching of two British former world champions on November 28.

Hearn told Boxing Scene, “Lots of dates and venues [are] in play.”

The other central issue in Rafael’s report is that streaming partner Netflix “was now OK with the move” after a previous effort to place the bout at New York’s Madison Square Garden on November 20 to maximize revenue and exposure.

Principality Stadium, offering a retractable roof and seating capacity beyond 80,000, is considered a superior site to Wembley Stadium because it isn’t obliged to the start-time restrictions that the north London venue adheres to due to neighborhood noise limitations.

Starting the fight in the early morning hours in the U.K. is preferable, at least to financiers, given the eight-hour time difference between there and the Pacific time zone in the U.S.

The stadium has history in that regard.

In 2007, the unified super-middleweight title fight between Wales’ Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler at Principality Stadium started at 2am local time, 9pm in the U.S. Eastern time zone.

Joshua has fought there twice in consecutive fights, defeating Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker in 2017-18.

Rafael reported the matter could be “resolved” within “the next couple days.”

In the U.K., The Times’ Tom Kershaw reported that the officials at the stadium could approve an extension to the typical curfew (10.30pm) within 24 hours.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Rugby Union that owns and operates Principality Stadium told BS in August, “We’d be delighted to host this fight.

“We are very keen to attract more boxing to the stadium, which has a rich history in the sport, enhanced by its close-able roof, unrivaled sight lines and unique city centre location.”

Fury 36-2-1 (25 KOs) has never fought there. The “Gypsy King” has spent recent days bemoaning Hearn and Joshua’s resistance to fighting in the U.S., saying he’d like to pursue a trilogy fight with recent undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk; a notion shot down by an Usyk associate.

Fury, 38, stopped veteran Mariusz Wach July 24 in Thailand in a tuneup bout for Joshua.

In his warm-up bout, the 36-year-old Joshua, 30-4 (27 KOs), recovered from two first-round knockdowns on July 25 versus Kristian Prenga to win by emphatic KO in the second.

If Netflix do it as PPV, am I right in saying that's a first for them?

I read they are considering a Netflix premium but not sure if this is an event they will consider for it. May not even go the premium route - I hope not. Once a provider goes down that avenue the standard subscription usually sucks.

I still maintain that all this palava was for a build up/Furys show. I reckon it was always going to be at the intended venue and date.

If it was dead, Fury would be talking complete bollocks. I'll bet you a BoxRec pound that it happens this year in Britain and it'll be announced by the end of this month. :D

But myself personaly i'm over the two of them , and could'nt care less, although i will stream it , if i could'nt find a stream , i certainly would'nt even bother to go watch it later on utube or anywhere .,

Its years overdue , and i already know how it will go ,

Fury outboxes him easy wins , on points ,,,,or

Fury outboxes him then stops him later rnds , or

AJ gets lucky and lands a big one , and stops him early

Aj's chin has complety gone ,, Fury has deteriated BUT no where near has much has AJ ,,

AJ should of done to that u tube fella what Garcia done to Benn , but how long did it take him to catch up and beat him up , anyone really belileive he;s gonna catch up with Tyson

NEWS: Per source with direct involvement, #JoshuaFury, if all is 100% buttoned up, will be on Dec. 11 in Cardiff. Still will take some time to wrap up the bureaucracy of getting permits in place. Nov. 28 and Dec. 4 were also dates part of the discussion. #boxing

Drug testing another inconsistency in Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury contracts, claims Eddie Hearn

First it was the location, then it was the date, and now it seems the drug-testing protocols on the original contracts of Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury were also different.

The pair look set to finally meet on December 11 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium after nearly a decade of back-and-forths. The most recent effort to get them together has proved somewhat turbulent, largely due to inconsistencies on the contracts.

Boxing Scene understands that Joshua’s contract stated the fight had to take place in the UK whereas Fury’s did not. The dates were not in sync, either.

Now another major difference, involving drug testing for the bout, has been alleged by Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

Hearn claims that in Joshua’s contract, which was signed more than three months ago, it stipulated that both fighters must start drug testing immediately. Joshua enrolled in testing, while Fury did not.

“The drug-testing protocol was the same as what had always been in there. It wasn’t adhered to in full,” said Hearn when asked by Boxing News, following Matchroom’s Pat Brown-John Hedges event, on Saturday. “I don’t actually necessarily blame Tyson Fury for that, because I don’t think, as we found out on many occasions, what’s in AJ’s contract is not necessarily in Tyson Fury’s contract.

“Testing was supposed to start when the original contracts were signed, and it didn’t for them. I don’t think he had in his contract that it had to start then. So this is not me saying he didn’t enroll. I don’t think he was obliged to enroll. But in our contract, he was obliged to enroll.

“These are small things, there’s been many issues along the way with the contract that we’ve let slip and ride because we want to stay in the fight, and we want to make sure the fight happens,” Hearn continued. “So the ones that we weren’t willing to let slip and ride, obviously 90 per cent of that was the location. TKO involvement was a little bit of that as well, but mainly it was the location.”

A source close to the situation told BS that Fury will “start drug testing” when the fight is formally announced. It would be unusual for fighters to begin testing before then.

Hearn also revealed that this is not the first time there has been a discrepancy in contracts while dealing with Turki Alalshikh and Sela. When Hearn represented Conor Benn for his two fights with Chris Eubank Jnr in 2025, there were also issues with contracts.

“It just causes non-stop problems, and we had it with the Eubank-Benn fight as well,” said Hearn. “As a small example, we were supposed to have the home dressing room in the fight, but Eubank added in his contract that he has the home dressing room. I know it sounds quite [minor], but it causes big problems.

“Other things — who walks first, who walks second, so many different things. Even down to the hydration, the fines and all this kind of stuff. People are so desperate to get deals done, rather than actually getting them done properly, they just say yes. But what happens is, down the line, it ends up kicking you in the nuts.”

Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury to be announced 'very, very soon'

Eddie Hearn has all but confirmed that a deal for the long-awaited clash between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is completed for December 11 in Cardiff, Wales.

It seems Hearn and Joshua have finally got their wish of the contest taking place in the UK after refusing to back down when every other party – Turki Alalshikh and Sela, Netflix, Dana White and TKO, and even Team Fury – seemed set on the event taking place in the US for financial reasons.

A date of November 20 had been agreed, with Madison Square Garden in New York lined up as the venue, but Hearn resisted at Joshua’s insistence because the former champion’s initial contract stipulated that the fight had to take place in the UK. What followed was a long and winding tug-of-war, with Joshua even rejecting financial incentives from TKO to secure the fight stateside.

“Over the last week or two, obviously we made our decision, and AJ was the guy leading that decision that we weren’t interested in accepting any extra money or changing the terms of the agreement to change the location,” said Hearn.

“He decided that he wanted to make sure that the fight was in the UK, and since then they’ve accepted that. We’ve worked together and we’ve been speaking to Netflix on regular occasions to basically lock in the date.

“I think the date is locked in, and I’ll let them give you the official announcement. It was supposed to be this week, but I think it’s going to be very, very soon.”

The date of December 11 at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium was first reported by Dan Rafael, with confirmation from the local council over the bout taking place at a reported time of 2am the only thing holding the fight back. Hearn admitted there are no longer any obstacles standing in the way of that date.

“No, nothing [is standing in the way],” he said. “I think there have obviously been conversations. I don’t think you’re going to see a 3am fight. I don’t think you’re going to see the fight that late.

“Obviously, there had to be conversations with the stadiums to see what’s possible and what’s not possible. I think that’s probably a reason for the slight delay, to make sure that everything was boxed off from the councils to have a slightly later start time.”

And offer them about 10% of what they could've made if they would've just gotten the f*ck on with it.

I sincerely hope that kinda thing starts happening more. When dudes drag on and drag out a negotiation like this. Just give them a fraction of what they could've been worth if they had chosen to behave like a fighter.

Quite the opposite Sam. It's Friday so they don't compete with US sports.
