Top Democrat Opposes Trump's Sale of Heavy Bombs to Israel
Top Democrat opposes US sale of heavy bombs to Israel
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crn8e20lep75o
The top Democrat on a congressional committee that reviews weapons deals has said he will not support a proposed $2.8bn (£2.1bn) arms sale to Israel.
Gregory Meeks said he would not back the transfer of 2,000lb (900kg) bombs to Israel over concerns they might not be used in accordance with international law.
The New York congressman's objection follows reports that the US is planning to supply Israel with 40,000 of what Meeks called "some of the most destructive munitions in our arsenal".
But his objection is not enough to stop the sale - President Donald Trump's administration can sidestep Congress and press ahead anyway.
Meeks, a ranking member on the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement he remained committed to Israel's security.
But he said that the deal "raises grave, unresolved concerns about how these munitions could be used in densely populated areas of Gaza and Lebanon".
He said it reflected Congress's "responsibility to ensure that US-funded weapons are used lawfully, responsibly, and with meaningful safeguards for human life".

One hell of a deal for Israel. Buy bombs with American money.
America first my ass

Re: Top Democrat Opposes Trump's Sale of Heavy Bombs to Israel
And the Stocks that Trump bought will go up in Value with the Government money he loaned Israel to buy those Weapons. He gets richer. The nation gets poorer.
Classic conman. Taking the suckers for all they're worth.

Re: Top Democrat Opposes Trump's Sale of Heavy Bombs to Israel
Dems sat on their hands when it was Biden announcing military packages for Israel six months or a year into the war. Israel had already essentially bombed Gaza into the Stone Age and I remember Biden coming of TV and talking about all the wonderful military toys coming Israel’s way. I remember asking my Mrs. “WTF is Biden sending them more bombs and planes? To make small piles of rubble out of the big piles of rubble?”

I have no problem with Israel buying bombs from the U.S. or anyone else but in this case they should do it with their own money and not through subsidized loans or U.S. taxpayer money.
Re: Top Democrat Opposes Trump's Sale of Heavy Bombs to Israel
I agree with that. Israeli's retribution was well understood, but perhaps enough is enough. I'm sick n friggin tired of progressives dying on the hill for Israel and trans teens. I'm sure I just pissed everyone off.Baby Face Finster wrote: ↑18 Sep 2026, 19:16 I have no problem with Israel buying bombs from the U.S. or anyone else but in this case they should do it with their own money and not through subsidized loans or U.S. taxpayer money.

The clock is ticking on US military aid to Israel. There is now massive bipartisan support in the electorate for ending it and it's only a matter of time until enough representatives are elected who are willing to act on that support.
In an attempt to keep himself in power Benji has done immeasurable long-term harm to his own country.

You most likely mean to REDUCE military support, rather than to end it altogether. And realistically, I don’t think U.S. military support for Israel will stop in the foreseeable future.jujigatame wrote: ↑18 Sep 2026, 22:33 The clock is ticking on US military aid to Israel. Wasnt there an amendment recently passed that effectively unified certain sectors of US and Israel Military Industrial Complex? I believe it was weapons manufacturing, tech development and AI.greg wrote: ↑19 Sep 2026, 06:09You most likely mean to REDUCE military support, rather than to end it altogether. Tinnie, I’m not an expert in this field… mine was more of a gut feeling, considering the unwavering military support for Israel.
Regarding your comment, AI notes and I quote:
“There is a recent provision in the FY2027 NDAA — Section 219, the ‘United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative,’ which was passed by the House in July 2026. While it does not merge the two military-industrial complexes, it would significantly deepen their technological and industrial integration, including cooperation in areas such as AI, cyber, missile defense, and other advanced military technologies.”

Pretty sure this is going to piss you off even more Perkin, as it does me:

The U.S. shouldn't be selling high end military equipment to anyone in the Middle East.

No they shouldn’t……..they should let China or Russia supply the region.

I do mean reduce it by orders of magnitude or eliminate it entirely. There's no reason we should be giving military aid to a nation that's in flagrant, perpetual violation of international law. And I"m pretty sure this is the majority view on both the American left and right wings now.greg wrote: ↑19 Sep 2026, 06:09You most likely mean to REDUCE military support, rather than to end it altogether. It hasn't passed yet I don't think. But this all has to happen relatively soon because the electorate has turned against Israel hard over the last couple years and once they start voting in more anti-Israel representatives measures like this are gonna be non-starters.

If you think that other countries are not in contravention of international Laws then you have to ask what Laws.jujigatame wrote: ↑19 Sep 2026, 15:11I do mean reduce it by orders of magnitude or eliminate it entirely. The UN was established after the two world wars……a fine ideal. The Human Rights Laws were drawn from it too. They are outmoded it seems. Uighars in China……an estimated 1 million dead, their women sterilised in re education camps but the Palestinian cause is more important. All about the kids and women when very few come on boats across the Med and English Channel.

They don’t need it. They’ll send it too.

Just the fact a 4 term democracy has a different tenure than a monolithic autocratic state that has continuous control and power
