Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz, with new coach Eddy Reynoso, set for San Diego showcase on September 19

Isaac Cruz has a main-event showcase to flex the advancements he’s made by aligning with new trainer Eddy Reynoso when Mexico’s Cruz headlines a PBC on DAZN September 19 card in San Diego.

Boxing Scene learned Wednesday night that WBC interim 140lbs champion "Pitbull" Cruz, 28-3-2 (18 KOs), will fight atop a card that will land at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. ESPN Knockout previously reported that Cruz is headed to fight Puerto Rico’s unranked 140lbs fighter Nestor Bravo, 24-1 (17 KOs).

The card is still being built, according to an individual familiar with the event.

Former WBA 140lbs champion Cruz returns to the ring after his December draw with Lamont Roach Jnr, the former junior lightweight champion who fights for the vacant WBC lightweight belt Saturday in Las Vegas versus No. 1 contender William Zepeda.

Cruz has switched from his trainer-father to Reynoso, who has cornered Canelo Alvarez to becoming a four-division champion, and also trains Jaime Munguia, the former 154lbs champion from Tijuana who showed major strides while taking the WBA super middleweight belt from Jose Armando Resendiz May 2 in Las Vegas.

Reynoso’s training camp is located in San Diego.

ISAAC CRUZ-NESTOR BRAVO SET FOR SEPTEMBER 19; SITE TBD

Isaac Cruz versus Nestor Bravo is set for September 19.

The Ring’s Mike Coppinger first reported the news on the latest episode of “Inside The Ring,” which streamed Monday on DAZN. Venues in Arizona and San Diego are two potential locations for their 140-pound bout.

Cruz (28-3-2, 18 KOs), who holds the WBC interim super lightweight title, last fought to a majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. on December 6 at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The 28-year-old Cruz, of Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico, previously held the WBA 140-pound title, winning it with an eighth-round stoppage of Rolando “Rolly” Romero in March 2024.

Cruz lost his first title defense by split decision against Jose Valenzuela in August 2024.

Coincidentally, Bravo’s handlers were in negotiations to fight Romero before Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) secured a higher-profile fight against Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) on August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Romero will make his first defense of the WBA welterweight title he won when he upset Ryan Garcia by unanimous decision in May 2025.

Bravo (24-1, 17 KOs) is coming off a second-round knockout of Pedro Campa on January 10 in New York. The Arecibo, Puerto Rico, native’s impressive victory over Mexico’s Campa (37-5-1, 25 KOs) is considered a strong candidate for “Knockout of the Year.”

The 32-year-old Bravo suffered the lone loss of his career one fight prior, a split-decision defeat to battled-tested Xolisani Ndongeni in March 2025.

South Africa’s Ndongeni (34-8, 20 KOs) has lost to Devin Haney, Ernesto Mercado, Arnold Barboza Jr. and Raymond Muratalla in his career.

‘Pitbull’ Cruz-Nestor Bravo, Jesús Ramos-Meiirim Nursultanov fights announced

On Saturday, September 19, Interim WBC junior-welterweight champion Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz will return to defend his title against challenger Nestor Bravo, live on DAZN (8 pm ET/5 pm PT) from Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.

Cruz, 28-3-2 (18 KOs), and Bravo, 24-1 (17 KOs), will meet in the 12-round Premier Boxing Champions main event that also features Interim WBC middleweight champion Jesús “Mono” Ramos Jr., 24-1 (19 KOs), taking on mandatory challenger Meiirim Nursultanov, 20-0 (11 KOs), in the 12-round co-main.

Cruz, who won the interim WBC belt with a 10-round unanimous decision over late-sub opponent Omar Salcido in July, will be having his first fight under the guidance of new trainer Eddy Reynoso against the currently unranked Bravo.

The popular 28-year-old Cruz, from Mexico City, also held the WBA junior-welterweight title by defeating current WBA welterweight champ Rolando "Rolly" Romero via eighth-round TKO in March 2024, but lost it in his first defense by dropping a 12-round split decision to Jose “El Rayo” Valenzuela in August of the same year.

He was last seen fighting to a 12-round majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. last December to retain his WBC belt.

“I am extremely motivated to return to the ring on September 19,” said Cruz. “I know that Bravo is very hungry and hoping to pull off the upset, but I also have a very clear goal, to keep proving that I belong among the elite.”

32-year-old Bravo, from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, rebounded from his first career loss, a 10-round split decision to South Africa’s Xolisani Ndongeni in March 2025, to score a one-punch second-round knockout over Pedro Campa in January. Prior to that, Bravo was unbeaten in 23 fights since turning pro in 2015.

“September 19 is gonna be a classic Puerto Rico vs. Mexico showdown,” said Bravo. “I’m very grateful to my team, and everyone who made this incredible event possible. I’m facing a tough, aggressive fighter who comes forward and likes to engage. But I have all the skills and versatility to win by any means necessary. We’re preparing the right way, and on fight night Puerto Rico will have a new champion.”

25-year-old Jesús “Mono” Ramos Jnr, from Casa Grande, Arizona, won his Interim WBC belt via a 12-round unanimous decision over Shane Mosley Jnr last December. Before that he scored a number of impressive victories over fellow contenders including Brian Mendoza, Javier Molina, Vladimir Hernandez and then-unbeaten Joey Spencer.

“I’m super excited to be back in the ring and extra motivated to defend my title for the first time,” said Ramos. “I know my opponent has a lot of experience and has been waiting for his opportunity. He’s a hungry and dangerous fighter, so we’re expecting the best version of him on September 19.”

32-year-old WBC No. 1-ranked Nursultanov, from Ayagoz, Kazakhstan, and now training in Southern California, hasn’t fought since winning a wide 12-round unanimous decision over then once-beaten Julio Alamos in November 2023.

“This upcoming bout is a moment I’ve been eagerly waiting for,” said Nursultanov. “Getting here took patience and relentless effort. Enough talk; I’m fully dialed in and ready to give my all. I’m bringing pure focus, intense drive and a hunger for victory.”

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has publicly stated the winner of Ramos Jnr- Nursultanov will be ordered to face full WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames next.

Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz, learning from Eddy Reynoso, has to take care of business

Isaac Cruz is readying for his September 19 showdown with Nestor Bravo, for “Pitbull’s” WBC interim junior welterweight strap inside the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California, with the help of esteemed coach Eddy Reynoso.

Mexico City’s Cruz is a long-time admirer of Reynoso, who is perhaps best known for his work with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

“One of the main reasons I want to work with Eddy Reynoso is his experience and the tremendous job he’s done with Canelo, and a long list of top fighters,” said Cruz.

“His ability to understand fighters, both mentally and technically, and to read each situation, has allowed him to reach the top of the sport. I believe Eddy has the qualities, experience, and knowledge we need to compete with the elite of boxing today.”

Cruz, 28-3-2 (18 KOs), knows he needs to beat Puerto Rico’s Bravo, 24-1 (17 KOs), to secure a shot at the full-fat WBC title at 140lbs. That belt will be on the line in Sheffield, England, when champion Dalton Smith takes on Alberto Puello on October 24.

“Bravo is a very tough fighter who always comes forward and likes to put on a show,” said Cruz.

“We’re going to be the next chapter of a great boxing rivalry and I know that this fight has everything it takes to go down in history as one of the great fights in the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry. I expect Bravo to come out with an aggressive mindset, but we have our own strategy to counter his style.

“I want to make a statement and leave no doubt that I deserve to face the winner of Smith vs. Puello.

“I’m also ready to face any champion in the division. And why not think about facing [welterweight titlists] Teófimo López, Ryan García or any 140-pound champion, such as Gary Antuanne Russell, in the not-too-distant future? But first, we have to take care of business and win on September 19.”

The defense against Bravo marks the fan-favourite’s first outing in San Diego.

Cruz, who most recently drew with Lamont Roach over 12 rounds last December, is expecting the local Mexican fight fans to come out in force.

“I’m very happy to be coming to San Diego for the first time,” said Cruz. “It’s a city with a huge Mexican community, and one that was once part of a Mexican territory. I want to give the fans in San Diego and coming up from Tijuana a fight to remember. I’m sure I’m going to feel right at home.

“The fans give you an adrenaline rush that every fighter craves.

Feeling the support and affection of the fans, especially in the United States, is priceless. I’m going to give it my all to put on a great show and make sure the fans leave satisfied.

“I want to showcase everything we’ve worked on and prepared for during this great training camp. You’re going to see a ‘Pitbull’ Cruz victory on September 19. Make no mistake about it.”

JESUS RAMOS HOSPITALIZED; OUT OF FIGHT VERSUS NURSULTANOV

A sudden illness forced Jesus Ramos to pull out of his fight Friday against Meiirim Nursultanov on Saturday night at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.

The two were slated to meet in the co-feature before Isaac Cruz faces Nestor Bravo in a main event DAZN will stream internationally streamed (8 p.m. ET; 5 p.m. PT). Ramos-Nursultanov will be rescheduled for a later date, according to a press release issued by Premier Boxing Champions.

Ramos, who holds the WBC interim middleweight title, was transported to a local hospital Thursday in the San Diego area for treatment. He was released on Friday.

Although their bout will be rescheduled, the WBC will have to figure out its next move. The winner of Ramos versus Nursultanov (20-0, 11 KOs) was set to face Carlos Adames, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked middleweight and full WBC titleholder.

Nursultanov, from Ayagoz, Kazakhstan, had been the mandatory challenger for nearly three years thanks to his 12-round, unanimous-decision victory over Julio Alamos in November 2023. He hasn’t fought since then.

As for Ramos (24-1, 19 KOs), the 25-year-old southpaw won the WBC interim middleweight title by beating Shane Mosley Jr. by unanimous decision on December 6 in San Antonio. The Casa Grande, Arizona, native is on a four-fight winning streak since losing to Erickson Lubin by unanimous decision in September 2023.

Adames, 32, defended his title via unanimous decision against Austin “Ammo” Williams on March 21 at Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

The Dominican Republic’s Adames (25-1-1, 18 KOs) was initially eyeing a unification bout against WBO champion Denzel Bentley. However, the WBC nixed those talks when it mandated that Adames must face the Ramos-Nursultanov winner next.

A 10-round bout between American super middleweight Daniel Blancas (15-0, 7 KOs) and Mexico’s Sergio Jimenez (17-1-1, 15 KOs) was elevated to the co-feature spot on the Cruz-Bravo undercard once Ramos withdrew from his fight versus Nursultanov.

ISAAC CRUZ KNOWS BIGGER FIGHTS AWAIT AFTER NESTOR BRAVO

Isaac Cruz knows what’s on the other side of a victory over Nestor Bravo.

The two will meet in the main event Saturday night at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California, live on DAZN.

For Cruz, getting a win and defending his WBC interim junior welterweight title is paramount. But equally as important is what's waiting on the other side if he gets the job done.

“This fight means a lot,” Cruz said at Thursday's press conference. “This fight can be something that means a lot for my career and I have to win in order to go and face the big names.”

Mexico City's Cruz hasn’t secured a win since beating Omar Salcido by decision in July 2025. The relentless pressure fighter fought Lamont Roach in December but had to settle for a majority draw.

Still, Cruz remains one of the 140-pound division's biggest names, making him an attractive option for some of the elite fighters. Matchups against champions Dalton Smith (WBC), Shakur Stevenson (The Ring/WBO) and Gary Antuanne Russell (WBA), intrigue Cruz.

Also, Cruz hasn’t ruled out the possibility of fighting WBC welterweight champ Ryan Garcia. The 28-year-old destroyed Conor Benn via second-round stoppage last Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Both Cruz and Garcia have called each other out over the years but a fight has failed to materialize.

Cruz (28-3-2, 18 KOs) has plenty of options, but before he turns his attention to those bigger names, he knows he has to remain focused on the task at hand.

“I’m fully focused on Nestor Bravo right now,” Cruz said. “That’s the only thing that I’m thinking about. I want the fans to be the biggest winner of the night and put on a show.”

Bravo, 32, hasn't fought since January when he destroyed Pedro Campa inside two rounds at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

Cruz KOs Bravo in the 6th, a mess of a fight, Bravo was there to hold and spoil, he got a point off in the 2nd for holding then another in the 4th for throwing Cruz to the canvas, he had plenty of warnings as well, ref was getting close to chucking him out, Cruz was aggressive as ever, dropped Bravo in the 1st with a right to the body, even that was scrappy, Cruz was getting frustrated, especially when Bravo hit him low a couple times, things were settling down in the 5th Bravo wasn't trying to get himself DQd as much but round 6 Cruz nailed him with a left hook which put him on his arse and although he didn't look finished Bravo wanted no more part

CRUZ KNOCKS OUT BRAVO IN 6TH ROUND OF FOUL-FILLED FIGHT

Isaac Cruz let his fists talk for him against Nestor Bravo on Saturday night.

A day after Bravo bragged about his chin and power at their weigh-in, Cruz emphatically ended their foul-filled fight with a left hook that knocked out his rule-bending challenger in the sixth round at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. That shot sent Bravo to the seat of his trunks, and he didn’t get up before referee Thomas Taylor counted to 10 at 1:30.

Cruz (29-3-2, 19 KOs), who went off as a 7-1 favorite, retained his WBC interim 140-pound championship in a main event DAZN streamed internationally. Bravo (24-2, 17 KOs) lost by knockout for the first time in 11 years as a pro.

“Listen, the performance speaks for itself,” Cruz told DAZN’s Chris Mannix in the ring before he called out WBC welterweight champ Ryan Garcia. “The left hand, I was prepared for anything he brought to the table and my plan worked.”

Cruz was ahead by the same score, 50-42, on all three cards entering the sixth because Taylor deducted two points from Bravo for fouls, one apiece in the second and fourth.

Mexico City’s Cruz, 28, fought for the first time since his hard-fought, 12-round majority draw with Lamont Roach on December 6.

Puerto Rico’s Bravo, 32, recorded a “Knockout of the Year” candidate in his previous appearance when he violently stopped Pedro Campa in the second round January 10. He didn’t approach Cruz with nearly the same determination.

Two rounds before Cruz crushed Bravo with the left hook, Taylor deducted a second point from Bravo 18 seconds into the fourth for flinging his opponent to the canvas. Taylor reiterated to Bravo that he was on the verge of disqualification.

Bravo landed what Taylor called an accidental low blow that caused another break in the action with 51 seconds on the clock in the third.

Taylor took a point from Bravo with 2:13 to go in the second due to incessant holding. Then, with 1:40 remaining, Taylor told Bravo he was close to getting disqualified after he picked up Cruz and dropped him to the canvas.

Cruz caught Bravo with a left hook that buzzed him at the midway mark of the opening round. Bravo held and wrestled Cruz to the canvas, which led to Taylor counting a knockdown because he was hurt.

Bravo tried to punch with Cruz once the action continued, but he realized it was a mistake. He held some more, which led to another warning from Taylor. Bravo was warned yet again by Taylor toward the end of the first round.
