Zuffa Boxing announce November 7 show in London

Zuffa Boxing have announced their next UK show.

Ahead of their event this weekend at London’s Copper Box Arena topped by Johnny Fisher-Michael Pirotton, the promotion have scheduled their third fight night in the United Kingdom for November 7 in London.

Zuffa Boxing are yet to announce any of the fights for the scheduled card and at which of London’s many arenas the event will take place. There are few UK fighters who are currently signed with the promotion capable of headlining such an event.

Their current stable includes Conor Benn – who was knocked out by Ryan Garcia earlier this month, Chris Billam-Smith – who topped Zuffa’s inaugural UK event back in June, Johnny Fisher – who tops this Saturday’s bill – and Craig Richards – who also features on this weekend’s bill in a tough fight against Radivoje Kalajdzic.

Chris Billam-Smith vs Cheavon Clarke headlines Zuffa Boxing 12 on November 7th

A domestic showdown between top UK cruiserweights helms Zuffa’s trip to London in November

Former amateur rivals Chris Billam-Smith and Cheavon Clarke will meet atop Zuffa Boxing’s first London show on November 7th at Copper Box Arena.

Billam-Smith (22-2, 14 KO), who managed two defenses of the WBO cruiserweight title before coughing it up to “Zurdo” Ramirez, is already having a banner year after beating the living dogsh*t out of Ryan Rozicki this past June. “The Gentleman” is still going strong at 36 years old, and while I don’t think anyone considers him in the same tier as Zuffa cohort Jai Opetaia or division invader David Benavidez, he remains one of the better 200-pounders in the game.

The same can’t really be said for Clarke (12-2, 9 KO), whose late pro start necessitated a mad dash through the ranks that Leonardo Mosquea and Viddal Riley halted in its tracks. His career looked over after a nasty knockdown at the hands of Jack Massey on that same Zuffa 7 show, but roared back for a comeback finish to keep the dream alive.

He does sport two wins over Billam-Smith in the amateur ranks, so he’s got that going for him, at least.

Also on tap is a quality light heavyweight showdown pitting Zach Parker (26-2, 18 KO) against amateur standout Umar Dzambekov (14-0, 10 KO). Parker arguably deserved a win over Joshua Buatsi last November and Dzambekov started his Zuffa career with a two-round demolition of Ahmed Elbiali.

Billam-Smith Vs. Clarke To Headline Zuffa Card Nov. 7 In London

An all-British cruiserweight clash will headline Zuffa Boxing’s next event in England.

The promotional company announced Friday that former WBO champ Chris Billam-Smith (22-2, 14 KOs) and Chev Clarke (12-2, 9 KOs) will square off in the 12-round main event of Zuffa Boxing 12 on November 7 at Copper Box Arena in London.

Paramount+ will stream the show in the United States and Canada and Sky Sports will televise it in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

British light heavyweight contender Zach Parker (26-2, 18 KOs) also will face Russian southpaw Umar Dzambekov (14-0, 10 KOs) in a 10-rounder on the undercard. The action will include another cruiserweight Zuffa signed recently, England’s Lucas Roehrig (9-0, 5 KOs), against Scotland’s Connal McDonald (5-1, 1 KO) in an eight-round bout.

Scottish middleweight Sam Hickey (6-0, 3 KOs) and American heavyweight Da’Mazion Vanhouter (13-0, 10 KOs) are among the prospects scheduled to compete against opponents to be determined.

Billam-Smith and Clarke are amateur rivals who won on the same Zuffa card June 6 in Bournemouth, England.

Billam-Smith stopped Canadian contender Ryan Rozicki (21-2-1, 20 KOs) after the seventh round of an action-packed main event. Clarke came back from two fourth-round knockdowns to drop and stop England’s Jack Massey (23-4, 13 KOs) in the seventh round of the co-feature.

Clarke, who competed at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo four years ago, went 2-0 against Billam-Smith in amateur matches.

Chris Billam-Smith and Chev Clarke set for London showdown on November 7

Chris Billam-Smith is set to fight Chev Clarke in a 10-rounder on November 7 at the Copper Box Arena in London, England atop a Zuffa Boxing event.

The pair last fought in 2016, when both were amateurs, with Clarke winning on points after three rounds to win the prestigious ABA championship at 91kg.

As professionals, however, former WBO cruiserweight boss Billam-Smith, 22-2 (14 KOs), has been the more decorated and the 36-year-old will hope victory leads to another shot at a world title.

Clarke, 12-2 (9 KOs), is coming off a career-best victory over Jack Massey in June. Topping that bill in Bournemouth, which marked Zuffa Boxing’s British debut, was Billam-Smith’s violent victory over Ryan Rozicki.

Also featuring on the card: Zuffa’s latest signing, rising cruiserweight Lucas Roehrig, 9-0 (5 KOs), will fight Scotland’s Connal McDonald, 5-1 (1 KO) in an eight-rounder; middleweight Sam Hickey, 6-0 (3 KOs), and American heavyweight Da’Mazion Vanhouter, 13-0 (10 KOs), will face opponents to be named in eight-rounders; at light heavyweight contender Zach Parker will face unbeaten puncher Umar Dzambekov in a 10-rounder.

BREAKING: Per source with direct knowledge, Denzel Bentley has signed a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing & will face a foe to be named in the Chris Billam-Smith-Chev Clarke co-feature Nov. 7 in London. Bentley will not accept terms of this week's WBO 160 title defense purse bid that would have paid him only $160k to face mandatory Yoenli Hernancedz & will vacate the title. #boxing

🥊 Announced: Denzel Bentley has signed a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing, and will fight Shane Mosley Jr on November 7th in London on the undercard of Zuffa Boxing 12.

Bentley was ordered to face mandatory challenger Yoenli Hernandez next, but he has petitioned the WBO to allow him to make a voluntary defense of his WBO middleweight title against Mosley Jr.

Denzel Bentley vs. Shane Mosley Jr. set for Nov. 7 in London

Denzel Bentley will make his Zuffa Boxing debut against a middleweight whose first fight with Zuffa was a smashing success.

The emerging promotional company, in which Ring owner Turki Alalshikh is a partner, announced Friday morning that Bentley will face Shane Mosley Jr. on November 7 in London.

Their 160-pound bout will be the co-feature on a card that’ll match former WBO cruiserweight champ Chris Billam-Smith against British rival Chev Clarke in the main event.

Paramount+ will stream those two bouts from Copper Box Arena in the United States and Canada. Sky Sports will televise the Bentley-Mosley match and the Billam-Smith-Clarke clash in the UK and Ireland.

Bentley’s multi-fight contract with Zuffa was also officially announced Friday.

It is unclear if London’s Bentley (22-3-1, 18 KOs) will defend the WBO middleweight title against Mosley (23-5, 13 KOs), who stopped Ukraine’s Serhii Bohachuk (27-4, 24 KOs) in the sixth round May 10.

Bentley was ordered to face mandatory challenger Yoenli Hernandez next, but he has petitioned the WBO to allow him to make a voluntary defense of his belt against Mosley. The WBO could deny Bentley’s request and strip him for failing to box Cuba’s Hernandez (11-0, 9 KOs).

Warriors Boxing won a purse bid Tuesday to earn the right to promote Bentley-Hernandez. It appeared clear, though, that its winning bid of $200,000 — the minimum allowed by the WBO — wouldn’t be enough to entice Bentley to take such a difficult fight.

Bentley’s purse for facing Mosley hasn’t been revealed, but it undoubtedly is much more than the $150,000 he would’ve been paid for Hernandez.

The WBO elevated Bentley, 31, from interim champ to full champ once former titleholder Janibek Alimkhanuly informed the Puerto Rico-based sanctioning organization in July that he would move up to the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds for his next fight.

Bentley beat Venezuela’s Endry Saavedra (18-2-1, 15 KOs) by seventh-round technical knockout to become WBO interim champ April 4.

Denzel Bentley's Zuffa fight with Shane Mosley Jnr not close to being WBO title bout

Denzel Bentley not only wants to avoid his mandatory challenger Yoenli Hernandez. He has already struck a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing to fight another contender next – Shane Mosley Jnr.

The WBO moved swiftly on the news, Boxing Scene has learned, with sanctioning body president Gustavo Olivieri informing his grievance committee chairman Fernando Gierbolini that Bentley, 22-3-1 (18 KOs), has not asked the WBO to make a voluntary defense against Mosley Jnr, 23-5 (13 KOs), son of the Hall of Fame former three-division champion.

An official said Olivieri made clear in a letter to Gierbolini that reports claiming Bentley petitioned the WBO to proceed with a voluntary defense against Mosley are not true.

Olivieri emphasizes Bentley and no representative of his team have reported that Mosley is the preferred voluntary opponent, for which the WBO has not granted permission.

The WBO previously ruled that Bentley, who won the interim belt in April and then inherited the full belt from former champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, also inherited an overdue obligation to fight the mandatory challenger next.

Cuba’s Hernandez, 11-0 (9 KOs), gained the mandatory distinction following an August 22 majority decision victory in Las Vegas, and earlier this week, his promoter, Premier Boxing Champions-linked Warriors Boxing, won a $200,000 purse bid for the right to stage Bentley-Hernandez.

On Friday, Zuffa Boxing announced it was signing Bentley and staging a November 7 fight in London against Mosley, who’s ranked No. 6 by the WBO and No. 2 by the WBA following his May 10 TKO of former WBC interim champion Serhii Bohachuk.

Olivieri’s tone in the letter reflected disappointment in Bentley’s move, an official said, although the WBO president yielded to his grievance committee to finalize a decision on the matter.

Olivieri emphasized in the letter that Zuffa Boxing is not licensed or registered with the WBO, detailing that is a relevant fact the committee must consider.

The committee may rule on Bentley as soon as next week, and could strip him of the belt or force him to vacate. Zuffa Boxing touted Bentley-Mosley as a world championship fight.

Boxing officials who spoke to BS say if Bentley is separated from the belt, a logical title opponent for Hernandez is Poland’s WBO No. 5-ranked Fiodor Czerkaszyn, 28-1 (18 KOs).

Da'Mazion Vanhouter is on the undercard of this.

He's the kid getting a lot of praise in the US as their next decent heavyweight.

Turned pro at 17 in Mexico weighing 154. Now weighs around 230 & kayoing Heavyweights. Currently 13(10)-0

Lives in St Pete Fl which is a pretty decent boxing area if you include Tampa & Clearwater.

Got tickets for this - should be a good night of boxing with a semi decent card. £38 for lower bowl tickets is very good value these days and you get a great view in the Copperbox. Really like the venue, good views and not long to wait at the bars to get a beer between fights. Toilets are tiny though so for someone with the bladder of a 5yr old like me that’s a minus! 🤣

BILLAM-SMITH EAGER TO END DECADE-LONG CLARKE RIVALRY

At the start of 2016, Chev Clarke's name meant very little to Bournemouth’s promising amateur Chris Billam-Smith.

But by the end of the year, Clarke would make a deep impact on the 26-year-old’s life, ruining his Christmas completely.

Billam-Smith would lose twice in the space of five months to the Gravesham boxer, who then pipped him to his dream spot with Team GB. With hopes of competing at an Olympic Games evaporating fast, he turned professional instead. Clarke, meanwhile, would represent GB at the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

But on November 7 at London’s Copper Box Arena, only a few miles from the scene of his second defeat to Clarke, the former WBO world champion will get a chance at revenge more than a decade in the making. The pair will clash in the main event of Zuffa Boxing 12 on Sky Sports in the UK and Paramount+ in the US.

“If I never got the chance to box him, it wouldn't bother me,” Billam-Smith tells The Ring. “But the fact I get the chance to box him now means I can put those 10 years to bed.”

The rivalry officially started at Liverpool’s Echo Arena in the final of the 2016 ABAs. Billam-Smith was about to face Ryan Hatton in the second semifinal and took the chance to have a quick look at the two men in the first. One of those was Clarke.

“I didn’t know much about him to be honest,” Billam-Smith recalls. “I knew he had come up from 81 kilograms to 91 kilograms where I was. He had been stopping a lot of people at 81, but then had a bit of time out and came back.

“So as I'm waiting in the wings of Liverpool Echo Arena for my semifinal against Hatton, I've warmed up in the changing room and I'm just moving around, but I'm watching his fight with Natty Nwenga … and he iced Natty out, hit him with a huge shot and stopped him.

“So I saw that just before I got in the ring to fight Hatton and I was like, ‘OK, right, I'm going to be boxing him tomorrow.’"

In the end, there was little to choose between Billam-Smith, of Poole ABC, and Clarke in the final, but it was the latter who got the decision. CBS, who had lost narrowly to Jack Massey at the same stage three years earlier, felt the familiar gut-punch of defeat.

“I thought I had boxed OK, it was close but I hadn’t been hurt so I thought I’d won to be honest,” he said. “But really GB was my goal and I knew I would get an assessment off the back of it, even though I hadn’t won.

“It was a long drive back from Liverpool to Bournemouth the next day, but I wasn’t sulking. It was done, I couldn’t go back and change the result, I just had to get better. My whole life revolved around the ABAs and GB assessments. I wanted to get on the Great Britain squad. I wasn’t thinking about being a professional boxer or anything like that, it was very much shorter term than that. It was like, I need to get on the GB squad and become a funded athlete.”

But Liverpool would not be the last he would see of Clarke that year as they met again in the final of the English Title Series at York Hall Bethnal Green. Again Billam-Smith beat Hatton in the semi but again he would come unstuck at the hands of the Jamaica-born former lorry driver.

“He beat me soundly that time,” Billam-Smith said. “I was demotivated at the time because I’d trained all summer for GB assessments, had a little break and then boxed Ryan Hatton. I wasn’t enjoying my boxing because I’d done a year straight just training and boxing, and by the time I got to Chev I was completely demotivated.”

Those feelings would be compounded in December, when the results of his GB assessment dropped through the door.

“I still remember that,” he said. “It was December 18, 2016, when I got the letter and it just said I had not been successful and that was my Christmas ruined.

“In the end there were three of us; me, Chev and Scott Forrest. Those two got on and I didn’t.”

Billam-Smith refused to give in and simply changed tact. Within nine months he would make his professional debut and kick off a very different quest.

The irony is that only Billam-Smith has reached the summit by becoming a pro world champion. Despite their history, Billam-Smith (22-2, 14 KOs) will start as a 3/1 (+300) favorite against Clarke (12-2, 9 KOs) at Copper Box.

“I'm so grateful that I never got the decisions in those ABA finals and I never got on GB,” he said. “It's the best thing that's ever happened to me. Every setback I've had has driven me. I remember losing an amateur fight once, and then the Sunday morning I'll be back on the road running because I'm like, ‘I need to be better.’ That's just always been my mindset. It's just get better, get better, get better. I don't know where it comes from.

“I’m 36 now and it’s still the same. All of that with Chev happened 10 years ago, but now, for my own ego, I can put it all to bed. There's nothing to gain from this fight because if I go out there and ice out Chev in a round everyone's like, ‘Well, you're meant to do that … of course you did that, blah, blah, blah.’

“So there's nothing to gain from this fight from the boxing world's perspective. It's not guaranteeing me a title shot or anything like that, but it's a good fight.

“And most importantly it’s one I stay up for because of the past. He’s 2-0 up at the moment, but I can have the final say.”
