I remember him with Maloney maybe 20 years ago, but mostly on his own in the Kushner days. Deserved more prominence.

Rezzer1967 wrote: ↑11 Sep 2026, 07:53 Steve Holdsworth is up there with Gutteridge Carpenter and Darke. He was a joy to listen to and when he was paired with Jim Brady or, I think , Eric Armit, they were often a lot more interesting than the fight. If he was on DAZN he'd be sensational but the powers that be would hate him after all I think Mike Costello was too much for them. Ive emailed him a few times and hes replied. What a man !
I remember when him and Jim Brady were together for the Atlanta Olympics, it was absolutely hilarious. While Steve doesn't have the smooth tones of Harry or Ian, he's always a good listen.
Im going to correct myself. It was Bob Mee not Eric Armit.

Yeah Bob Mee was great, incredibly knowledgeable, good writer too. lost to the game because he seems to have retired. Eddie and those clowns at DAZN probably don’t even know who he is.

I might be wrong, but I seem to remember Steve started off filming shows himself and commentating on those, before the Eurosport days.

Is tragic when you compare the last generation of boxing interviewers, presenters and commentators with what we have now.

We had Gutteridge, Jim Watt, Carpenter, Dempsey, Holdsworth, Ian Darke, Glenn McCrory, Jim Rosenthal etc

Now we have Anna Woolhouse and a bunch of other clueless birds, Adam Smith, Charlie Parsons and some yes men ex boxers like Johnny Nelson…..

Barry Jones is the only guy who has anything worthwhile to say presently.

It’s genuinely a dumbing down of mainstream media, spoonfeeding the audience ‘banter’ and basically just advertising whatever fighter the broadcaster wants to promote. Any real analysis has gone completely out of the window. Football is the same, maybe even worse than boxing actually. Cricket is probably the only sport I watch regularly which doesn’t seem to be targeted at total morons now.

No, Darren Barker has one good thing to say. When a fight is about to start and he says the immortal words, "Don't get up to make a cup of tea." You put a load of money on Fighter A by stoppage. :D Thanks Dazza.

Darkie was a fine boxing commentator but nothing special at football.
On another matter can anyone remind me who did Comms for Screensport back in the 80s and early 90s?

Anything that's slow release entertainment like cricket is relatively safe from the Idiocracy

He does quite a bit of MCing and refereeing at White Collar shows around London. And a very good job he does too. Always has time for everyone.

💯 The quality of so called boxing journos is shocking. Unfortunately,in the UK it is impossible to do an impartial interview and ask tough questions. If you do,access to shows and presses can become very limited.
