Never understood why Dana White should be involved. He has no promotor connections with the two fighters.
Also ridiculous to let British fans wait till 2 AM in the winter in a stadium without a roof.

Fury-Joshua showdown in jeopardy over Dana White’s involvement

Netflix and Alalshikh announced he’d promote fight but Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn says that is prohibited in his contract

One day after Turki Alalshikh formally — and finally — announced that British heavyweight stars and former champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua would meet on Dec. 11 in a Netflix blockbuster at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, the fight was thrown into jeopardy on Friday and risked being canceled.

The Alalshikh-owned Ring magazine, which is putting on the fight, announced that it “could be called off due to issues,” which were unspecified, and that a fight between Terence Crawford, who retired as super middleweight champion in December, and WBC welterweight titlist Ryan Garcia was being considered as a replacement.

That fight does not appear realistic and its suggestion seemed more like fantasy. Crawford, who is not remotely close to his fighting weight, chimed in on social media, “Why I don’t know about this?”

As for the “issues” related to Fury-Joshua the major one, sources involved in the event told Fight Freaks Unite, was the announcement by Alalshikh in a Netflix press release on Thursday that named Zuffa Boxing’s Dana White as the promoter of the fight, which White has been saying for weeks would be the case.

He said he made the deal with Madison Square Garden to host the fight before it was moved and that he was instrumental in doing the Netflix deal.

However, Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing has said to anyone who will listen for weeks that their contract specifically states that White and TKO Group Holdings, Zuffa Boxing’s parent company, are not permitted to be involved.

“Netflix didn’t get the memo. Our contract is very clear. Dana and TKO can have no promotional involvement in the event. They have been written to,” Hearn told Fight Freaks Unite after the announcement press release was issued.

White has made no secret that one of his aims with upstart Zuffa Boxing, which is a joint venture between TKO and Saudi Arabia’s SELA, which takes its direction from Alalshikh, is to put the major legacy promoters out of business. White and Hearn have had plenty of negative things to say about each other and the last thing Hearn wants is for White to promote a fight involving Joshua, who Hearn has promoted since his 2013 pro debut and has grown close to.

Asked if thought things would get worked out, Hearn told FFU on Friday, “Probably but who knows?”

Having White involved is the not the only contract breach that has angered the Joshua side. According to sources with knowledge of the agreement, Joshua has followed through and enrolled in the drug testing program both sides agreed to but Fury, who was supposed to enroll more than two months ago, still has not.

The kickoff news conference scheduled for Wednesday in London is in limbo. There are some involved in the fight that planned to fly from the United States to London for the gathering but were told by superiors to hold off on booking their flights.

Fury said he would welcome White’s involvement.

“In Joshua’s contract apparently it says that TKO and Dana couldn’t be involved,” Fury said in an interview with Furocity. “That was in my contract but I took it out. I took it out so he could be involved. fornicate them. Yeah, I want him involved. Two baldies together.

“I like Dana. Good businessman and a good guy. A man who comes from nothing to being a billionaire, and look what he’s done with the UFC. Unbelievable. I think he can do really well in boxing. I think he drives Eddie Hearn out, feeds him to the fishes.”

After it was revealed that fight might be called off on Thursday, an incensed Fury posted a video to social media going off on Joshua and Hearn.

“We have breaking news! Anthony Joshua and Eddie Hearn are trying to pull out of this fight,” Fury said. “They’re saying they’re not going to fight now. They’re little shithouse cowards. It’s mainly due to Eddie Hearn’s ego. He’s making up a million different things and threatening we’re not going to fight. You little coward. AJ, pull your finger out, you little white flag, yellow bellied coward. Now we’re coming home. Now I’m coming home. ‘The Gypsy King’ is coming back to the United Kingdom to thrash you in front of all my fans in Wales. You absolute little nugget, bodybuilding, sausage. And now you’re making a million excuses.

“Now you’ve got Turki Alalshikh finding alternative real men who will fight at the drop of a hat. So I hope you’re happy you little cowardly bastards. I’ve never seen anything like you. You’re pure shithouses, and this is mainly to do with Eddie Hearn’s ego. What a little prick. It’s cost us the biggest fight in boxing history, clown.”

White, who is in London this week promoting a Zuffa Boxing card on Saturday, addressed the issue of his role in Fury-Joshua in an interview with Zuffa Boxing broadcast partner Sky Sports.

“I am not involved in either side of this thing. I’m involved on the Turki side,” White said.

As far as Hearn going to Netflix to point out the apparent contract breach by announcing that White is the promoter, White said, “You think Netflix cares what Eddie Hearn thinks? I guarantee they do not. I’m sitting here promoting the fight right now. Who’s going to stop me?”

The fight, a decade in the making, was finally signed in April pending both fighters winning tune-ups, which they did. The long-awaited showdown, perhaps the biggest all-British fight in history, was pegged for November but then a disagreement arose over the site.

The bout was being planned for the United Kingdom with London’s Wembley Stadium the first choice, although there were logistical issues and possible weather issues because it is open air, unlike Principality Stadium, which has a retractable roof. But then Alalshikh and Netflix instead looked to place the fight on Nov. 20 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Fury was agreeable, even though his contract called for the fight to take place in Ireland, according to Queensberry promoter allegedly. But Hearn said the contracts on the Joshua side stipulated that the bout must take place in the United Kingdom and they refused to budge. Hearn said Zuffa Boxing officials even went behind his back to try to make a deal directly with Joshua, who rebuffed those efforts.

Eventually, details to hold the bout at about 2 a.m. Cardiff time were worked out because Netflix, which is playing tens of millions of dollars for the event, wanted it to begin at a convenient hour for the United States time zones, and the fight was officially announced on Thursday.

WBA faces questions over lucrative Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury title plan

Should reports be true that suggest the WBA intend to decorate the Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury showdown with the WBA ‘super’ heavyweight title, the sanctioning body will have questions to answer from the team of Murat Gassiev.

Gassiev currently holds the WBA ‘world’ title and since Oleksandr Usyk relinquished three belts in June, including the WBA ‘super’ title, he has been the organization’s sole leader at heavyweight.

In the latest WBA heavyweight rankings, Gassiev is listed as champion, Jarrell Miller is No. 1, with Fury and Joshua – set to fight in Cardiff on December 11 – as second and third respectively.

“Murat Gassiev is the reigning WBA heavyweight world champion,” stated Gassiev’s co-promoter Ivaylo Gotzev of epic sports and entertainment. “He won his championship in the ring, has defended it and has fulfilled his responsibilities as champion.

“If a new super champion is now to be designated above the existing world champion, then there must be absolute clarity about how that decision is consistent with the WBA’s rules, rankings and championship structure.”

Should the ‘super’ title be contested between Joshua and Fury, it will be the first time the belt has been on the line in a heavyweight bout between two non-beltholders.

In July, with Joshua-Fury negotiations ongoing, Fury’s manager Spencer Brown made a public plea to the WBA to reintroduce the ‘super’ heavyweight title.

“I want to see the WBA [super title] for the [Joshua-Fury] super fight,” he told BS. “I’d love to see it because it’s vacant. Why couldn’t them two fight for it? Could there be any better a fight? One of them will become a three-time world champion. I love that.

The WBA super title was originally designed for champions who also held belts with other sanctioning bodies. Over time, the championship existed not just for ‘unified’ champions but also established titlists and allowed the WBA to have multiple ‘champions’, including ‘interim’ beltholders, in every weight class.

In 2021, the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) demanded that the WBA reduce the number of titles. At the time, WBA president Gilberto Mendoza said: “We will reduce titles permanently. That flexibility we’ve had with championships, we will phase it out progressively.”

By June 2024 the WBA recognized 27 champions across 18 divisions. By June 2026, however, that figure had risen sharply to 43. “The WBA remains committed to its goal of reducing the number of world champions,” a statement from the organization read in the face of the increase.

Like every sanctioning body, the WBA charge sanctioning fees for any contest involving a WBA title of any description, whether a world or regional belt. At the organization’s annual convention in December 2024, Mendoza revealed that 67 per cent of its gross annual revenue came from sanctioning fees alone. That equated to $4 million from the purses of fighters being paid to the WBA.

The sanctioning fee is a fixed percentage of the fighters’ purse. Joshua and Fury, two of the biggest earners in boxing history, are set to secure career-high paydays.

“They’re getting paid more than any British fighter has earned in a fight ever,” Fury's promoter allegedly told Sky Sports on Thursday.

The WBA, therefore, could be on the brink of securing an incredible sum in sanctioning fees for the bout. Before that, however, they will be under pressure to be transparent about the purpose and existence of the title.

“We are formally seeking clarification from the WBA and, where applicable, enforcement of Murat’s rights under its rules and regulations,” Gotzev continued.

“The prestige of a sanctioning body is built on the credibility of its championships. A world title has value because fighters know what they must do to earn it, champions what they must do to keep it, and the public understands what that championship represents.”
