Wow, This is an interesting matchup. Jones will have the crowd behind him, but Sanchez’s experience could make things tricky if the fight gets into the later rounds. :bag: :bag:

Agreed. This is a solid, step-up test for Jones. In my opinion, we don't see this enough for up and coming boxers, whose teams typically want to give them soft touches, protecting that "0" and building up an inflated record.

Some truly impressive archaeological matchmaking here. Where the hell did they dig up Alan Sanchez from? I thought he was dead.

35 years old, hasn't fought in 17 months, last seen getting stopped in May 2025 and that was at 147. Now they've excavated him, dusted him off and moved him up to 154 to fight a 25 year old Olympic bronze medalist.

And some say it's a good fight. Beautiful prospect matchmaking.

While not as busy as some fighters, Sanchez has had six fights in the last five years, winning four of them. His losses came to fighters with a combined record of 29-4-2 while the wins came against boxers with a combined record of 68-11-2. Yes, he was stopped at WW in May 2025 by Flaz, who at the time was on a five-fight winning streak between WW and SWW.

Still, I would rather see a young, Olympic medalist tested by an experienced fighter like Sanchez, rather than just logging rounds against some no hoper with a glitzy record of 4-72-0. (To his credit, Jones has not fought anyone like that and his resume is much better than most with only seven fights in just over a year and a half.) I also know it doesn't mean Jones won't take out Sanchez in the opening frame, although I believe he would be better served by having to work at least five rounds.

OMARI JONES EYES STATEMENT WIN IN FIRST PRO MAIN EVENT

Omari Jones couldn’t have picked a better place for his first time being in the main event.

The Orlando native will face Alan Sanchez in the headliner of Matchroom Boxing’s Project Series 2 card on Friday at Caribe Royale. Their eight-round junior middleweight bout will stream on DAZN.

After fighting on the undercards of Matchroom Boxing cards in his first seven fights, Jones feels more than ready to take the next step in his career.

“I have always been the co-main event, and a lot of the people that were there came out for me,” Jones told The Ring. "For me to actually have the title of the main event is just a dream come true as a kid. That was always a goal and a dream to fight here and headline. … It means everything.”

Jones (7-0, 4 KOs) has felt the love from his hometown throughout his journey, which includes winning a bronze medal for the U.S. in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. His ascent has even drawn the attention of Orlando Magic head coach Sean Sweeney, who touted Jones as one of his favorite fighters to watch.

Jones, 23, was honored before an Orlando City soccer game on September 12 and also had a media workout on Saturday where the Orlando community was able to meet with him. Being involved in the community was something that was instilled in him long before he reached the limelight. After initially taking up karate at four years old, he got into boxing four years later in a program named Dynamic.

That experience has persuaded Jones to try to help kids who are a part of the same programs that he grew up in. Former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali’s quote, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth,” is also at the forefront of Jones’ mind when it comes to giving back to Orlando.

“My parents taught me the importance of giving back to your community,” Jones said. “A quote from Muhammad Ali: he said doing work in your community is your rent here on Earth. I stick with that, and then you see in the gym, the young ones, they’re right behind me. They’re trying to follow in my footsteps, whether that's going to the Olympics or going to the professional ranks. I'm just the person that they look up to show that it's possible [and] that it could be done.”

After beginning his career with four straight knockouts, Jones has gone the distance in his last three fights. He won every round in a unanimous decision over Diego Zuniga in an eight-round bout on the undercard of O’Shaquie Foster's majority decision victory over Ray Ford to retain his WBC 130-pound title in Houston on May 30.

He was originally scheduled to face Sanchez (24-7-1, 10 KOs) before Zuniga replaced him. Sanchez last fought in May 2025 and was stopped by Nicklaus Flaz in the fourth round.

Jones believes the rounds he’s gone in his last three fights were necessary for his development. However, given the stage and opportunity at hand, he hopes he can get back to his knockout ways in his first main event in his hometown.

“It’s going to show my dominance. Of course, the goal is to get the win [and] dominate, but for me to get a stoppage and do that in an impressive fashion against an opponent like this, it'll be amazing. I plan to make a statement. That's what we're gonna do.”

Jones looked sharp for the short time it lasted, was picking Sanchez off with sharp clean shots, opened Sanchez up in the 2nd, good speed, good variety, lefts, rights , head and body before forcing him down when the ref waved it off, I think he could've gave Sanchez a count tbh but Jones would've been too fresh regardless

Omari Jones Overpowers Alan Sanchez, Gets 2nd-Round TKO

The stage was set perfectly Friday night for Omari Jones fighting in the main event for the first time in his hometown.

Jones did more than deliver, stopping Alan Sanchez 49 seconds into the second round at Caribe Royale. The eight-round junior middleweight bout headlined Matchroom Boxing’s Project Series 2 and streamed on DAZN.

“That’s what I wanted,” Jones said in his post-fight media scrum. “I felt like I needed to make that dominant statement and get him out of there. I didn’t say nothing, but I wanted to take it round by round. Once I knew that opportunity was there, I saw it early, and I took it.”

Jones (8-0, 5 KOs), a 2024 bronze medalist in the Paris Olympics, set the tone in the first round. He pressured Mexico’s Sanchez (24-8-1, 10 KOs), landing clean power shots to the head and body while keeping the shorter Sanchez at the end of his reach.

While Jones knew he wanted to be the aggressor, Sanchez’s approach to be more passive caught him by surprise.
“He came out very different from what I watched on film,” Jones said. “Everybody just kept telling me pressure fighter, pressure fighter, and he came out moving. I had to adjust to that quickly, and I feel like I did.”

Jones, 23, carried the momentum from the first round into the second. He immediately took to the center of the ring and with 2:25 left, he landed a straight right hand that made Sanchez retreat to his corner.

Sanchez, 35, crouched in his corner as Jones unleashed a barrage of left hooks and straight right hands before referee Christopher Young stopped the fight.

The stoppage victory was Jones’ first after going the distance in his last three fights.

Among those in attendance for Jones’ first main event were Orlando Magic shooting guard Desmond Bane and head coach Sean Sweeney.

“That means everything,” Jones said. “It shows the star power I have here in Orlando, Florida. It’s an amazing thing to see the Orlando Magic coming out. That was the first time they’ve been at one of my fights.”

Orozco Beats Abrahante By 6th-Round TKO

Jordan Orozco was losing the fight until he wasn’t.

After clearly being behind in the first half of the fight, the Nicaraguan prospect scored a sixth-round stoppage over Yusniel Abrahante in the co-main event.

Abrahante’s speed and defense had him firmly in control. The Cuban southpaw was connecting with clean shots and making the 22-year-old Orozco miss wildly with power shots.

The fight changed late in the sixth when Orozco (18-0, 18 KOs) hit Abrahante (8-3, 1 KO) with a left hook to the liver with 48 seconds left in the round. Abrahante grabbed onto Orozco and was visibly in pain.

Before referee Luis Pabon could break them up, Abrahante, 25, was running to try and get away from Orozco.

Orozco cut Abrahante off and got him trapped in the corner. After a barrage of unanswered punches while Abrahante ducked into the ropes, Pabon stopped the fight with 30 seconds remaining in the sixth.

In all honesty, I had hoped that Sanchez would provide Jones with a stiffer test but, obviously, that wasn't the case. Jones is talented with a big upside, so it's time to upgrade the level of opponents to get a better sense of just how good he is at the moment.

Omari Jones is very well educated and his last few fights left me wanting more from him. He didn't really show much of a killer instinct and just cruise to a victory. But against Sanchez he stepped on the gas pedal and put that dude down when he was hurt. Him and Joshua Edwards need to show more but they're slowly getting there.
