This is the result of many hours of research, and it just goes to show how incomplete the records of even top fighters of the time are. I have Clow at number 28 in my ratings for the decade of the 1880s, and yet fights with men like Nolan, Hinch, Campbell, Curtis, etc are not listed. Also, I can't find any record of a Captain James Dalton fight that always appears on both their ledgers. If there are any errors or omissions, I would love to be informed. Sorry about the hard-to-read text ,but I created it in Excel and lost the format when posting, I hope to post a biographical sketch of Clow in the history section; quite a character!

John Pollock Clow
b. 2/24/1862 in Erie, PA (moved to Colorado in 1875)
1882
Nov 16 - Willis H. Cush - KO 17 - Denver, CO - West Turner Hall

Jun 9 - Lieutenant Bernard - exh 3 - Denver, CO - West Turner Hall
Jun 30 - Harry Pierson - KO 9 - Denver, CO - West Turner Hall
Aug 4 - George A. Morrison - TKO 14 - Denver, CO - West Turner Hall
Oct 4 - James Kane - exh 3 - Denver, CO - West Turner Hall

other quick notes:
1. the Thebold fight was August 29, 1884
2. the fight in question with James Dalton occurred May 15, 1885 at the Park Theater in Chicago, ILL (decision was a draw in five rounds)

I will write more of his record at a later date but have to leave on a trip shortly...

great information, thanks!
Any press report on the Dalton fight?
His birthday is definitely February 9th 1861 at Meadville, Crawford, Pennsylvania, thanks to Gregory Speciale and John Barbella. Father Alex and mother Sarah Boyd. Their residence was in Erie at that time.

[Bob]

The birthdate has definitely been an issue...I took it from an early article about him from the Colorado papers (after an interview). I know the 1861 date has been around for a bit, but the problem lies in the census information. In the 1870 census, dated in June 1870, he is listed as 8-years old, which would put his date of birth in 1862 (since the birth month is February). Do the people you mentioned have a birth certificate or something concrete regarding his date of birth that would prove the year...not trying to argue, nor am I too worried about this, but I'm curious to see if there is anything definitive existing regarding his birth (I checked the genealogy websites and could only find census records or family recollections).

[mattdonnellon]

No problem at all. They are specialists in that field and have four sources; I've never seen them to be wrong. The 1880 census has John at 17 years old, so he was getting younger all the time! I had him in my records for February 24 1892 also. I think we will have a pretty good bio and record for him when we finish. I still can't get anything on the Dalton fight.

Updated with a few new fights and some details from Bob's post. More to follow, I suspect.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you use the updates I sent?

[mattdonnellon]

I've used some; working through the rest! see PM.

[mattdonnellon]

Eureka!Bob came up trumps with the elusive Dalton-Clow drawn encounter. The above record now modified and a few other additions of exhibitions added too.
